Em Imagens Urbanas: mangue, tabuleiro, cidades toma-se a cidade de Aracaju, no estado de Sergipe, como espaço de problematização do presente, a fim de analisar os processos de transformação urbana e seus efeitos sobre os modos de subjetivação atuais. Os conceitos de heterotopia e de imagem dialética são primordiais para tais análises. A partir do conceito de heterotopia de Michel Foucault, a cidade é pensada em sua heterogeneidade, composta por espaços distintos, que se justapõem e que estabelecem uma relação de tensão e conflitos entre si, criando rupturas no contínuo da vida citadina. A categoria de imagem dialética de Walter Benjamin, bem como das leituras atuais sobre as imagens, feitas pelo pensador Georges Didi-Huberman, colocam-se como ferramentas conceituais necessárias para interpelar e problematizar as transformações urbanas que tendem a neutralizar, ou tornar menos visíveis, as forças irruptivas dessas tensões e conflitos, inerentes aos espaços que se justapõem nas cidades. O mangue e o rio que cortam a cidade de Aracaju são tomados como produtores dessas imagens de tensão. Os conceitos benjaminianos de experiência, narrativa, origem e história também compõem a tessitura desta obra. Este livro é fruto de uma escrita que se fez a partir de experiências por outros sentidos ou outras formas de habitar a cidade. Ao que poderia levar à simples pergunta: o que é a cidade? Ao invés de pensar ou querer responder essa pergunta, o texto aqui presente esquiva-se. Por meio de narrativas de cenas cotidianas da cidade de Aracaju, buscou-se tecer histórias que falassem sobre outras formas de experienciar a urbe. O Mercado Central, a Rua da Frente, a Avenida Beira-Mar, a Orla Pôr do Sol, dentre outras localidades, serviram de inspiração para narrativas, nas quais a força intempestiva e originária do mangue e do rio é intensificada, visando a provocar interferências no presente da urbe, mantendo-a viva e inacabada. Apesar de tomar a cidade de Aracaju como lócus das problematizações, este livro aspira ir além dela e que, à medida em que essas histórias insurgentes sejam lidas e experienciadas, outras histórias, também insurgentes, sobre outras cidades possam ser tecidas.

A publicação preserva a estrutura de organização das sessões, que foram concebidas durante o processo de seleção dos 12 trabalhos, inclusive e justamente porque não partíamos de um projeto coletivo prévio e que geralmente resulta em alguma publicação. Organizados em três partes (Parte A – Projetos Urbanos, políticas municipais e o desenvolvimento urbano / Parte B – Planejamento e desenvolvimento: do município à metrópole / Parte C – Arquitetura e paisagem urbana), o livro é resultado de um processo que aos poucos surgiu como decorrência de um trabalho coletivo interessado no tema geral do desenvolvimento urbano do Rio de Janeiro a partir de estudos sobre o papel do setor municipal de urbanismo para esse desenvolvimento. O que, por outro lado, não inviabilizou leituras mais direcionadas ao espectro metropolitano em suas diversas escalas e temporalidades históricas, como abordagens sobre a chamada Era Vargas, sobre as reformas urbanas para as Olimpíadas de 2016 ou sobre o Corredor Cultural, entre outras entradas possíveis.

Within the most recent discussion on smart cities and the way this vision is affecting urban changes and dynamics, this book explores the interplay between planning and design both at the level of the design and planning domains’ theories and practices. Urban transformation is widely recognized as a complex phenomenon, rich in uncertainty. It is the unpredictable consequence of complex interplay between urban forces (both top-down or bottom-up), urban resources (spatial, social, economic and infrastructural as well as political or cognitive) and transformation opportunities (endogenous or exogenous). The book addresses urban transformations towards sustainability in light of challenges of global urbanization processes and the consequences of global environmental change. The aim is to show that urban transformations only succeed if both innovative scientific solutions and practice-oriented governance approaches are developed. This assumption is addressed by providing theoretical insights and empirical evidence pointing particularly at 3 concepts or qualities which are determined here as being central for achieving urban sustainability: resource efficiency, quality of life and resilience. Urban case studies from several international research projects illustrate our conceptual approach of urban transformations towards sustainable development. Thus, the book reaches far beyond a mere additive description of single case studies. It incorporates the results of condensed synthesis, resulting from comparisons and evaluations. Após publicar, em 2017, o livro Imagens Políticas: reflexões práticas e práticas reflexivas, o grupo de pesquisa Imagens Políticas: Poéticas Políticas do Teatro Contemporâneo apresenta aqui seu segundo livro com artigos de seus integrantes. Para sua escrita, o grupo discutiu previamente, em encontros semanais, as teses Sobre o Conceito de História de Walter Benjamin.
