Portuguese cinema has become increasingly prominent on the international film festival circuit, proving the country's size belies its cultural impact. From the prestige of directors Manoel de Oliveira, Pedro Costa and Miguel Gomes, to box-office hit La Cage Doree, aspects of Portuguese national cinema are widely visible although the output is comparatively small compared to European players like the UK, Germany and France. Considering this strange discrepancy prompts the question: how can Portuguese cinema be characterised and thought about in a global context? Accumulating expertise from an international group of scholars, this book investigates the shifting significance of the nation, Europe and the globe for the way in which Portuguese film is managed on the international stage. Chapters argue that film industry professionals and artisans must navigate complex globalised systems that inform their filmmaking decisions. Expectations from multi-cultural audiences, as well as demands from business investors and the criteria for critical accolades put pressure on Portuguese cinema to negotiate, for example, how far to retain national identities on screen and how to interact with `popular' and `art' film tropes and labels. This study explores the representation of international migration on screen and how it has gained prominence and salience in European filmmaking over the past 100 years. Using Polish migration as a key example due to its long-standing cultural resonance across the continent, this book moves beyond a director-oriented approach and beyond the dominant focus on postcolonial migrant cinemas. It succeeds in being both transnational and longitudinal by including a diverse corpus of more than 150 films from some twenty different countries, of which Roman Polański’s The Tenant, Jean-Luc Godard’s Passion and Krzysztof Kieślowski’s Trois couleurs: Blanc are the best-known examples. Engaging with contemporary debates on modernisation and Europeanisation, the author proposes the notion of “close Otherness” to delineate the liminal position of fictional characters with a Polish background. Polish Migrants in European Film 1918-2017 takes the reader through a wide range of genres, from interwar musicals to Cold War defection films; from communist-era exile right up to the contemporary moment. Cette thèse est le résultat d'une recherche sociologique ayant pour objet l'imaginaire collectif de la communauté d'origine portugaise installée en France. Plus spécifiquement, l'étude porte sur les films consacrés à ce groupe social et qui ont été réalisés au cours de quatre décennies (entre 1967 et 2007). La discrétion notoire dont a toujours fait preuve la communauté portugaise dans l'espace public français, au point que cette communauté jouit d'une certaine réputation d'invisibilité au sein de la société française, a constitué l'un des motifs de ce travail. A travers une enquête approfondie sur les images associées à ce groupe social, la vie collective de la communauté portugaise en France se laisse en effet saisir d'une manière neuve. Pour mener à bien une telle enquête, il nous a fallu à la fois envisager les représentations associées à la communauté portugaise immigrée dans le contexte de la société d'accueil, et les représentations d'elle-même que cette communauté a pu produire au long de la période considérée. Notre recherche, fondée sur l'étude sociologique des images en mouvement, s'est ainsi proposée de saisir les principaux éléments symboliques qui structurent l'imaginaire collectif des immigrés portugais en France et de leurs descendants.
