Once considered the golden age of French printmaking, Louis XIV’s reign saw Paris become a powerhouse of print production. During this time, the king aimed to make fine and decorative arts into signs of French taste and skill and, by extension, into markers of his imperialist glory. Prints were ideal for achieving these goals; reproducible and transportable, they fueled the sophisticated propaganda machine circulating images of Louis as both a man of war and a man of culture. This richly illustrated catalogue features more than one hundred prints from the Getty Research Institute and the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris, whose print collection Louis XIV established in 1667. An esteemed international group of contributors investigates the ways that cultural policies affected printmaking; explains what constitutes a print; describes how one became a printmaker; studies how prints were collected; and considers their reception in the ensuing centuries. A Kingdom of Images is published to coincide with an exhibition on view at the Getty Research Institute from June 18 through September 6, 2015, and at the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris from November 2, 2015, through January 31, 2016.

In talking with new acquaintance, they often tell me that they would like to travel to a region in France. But, outside of Paris where they have already visited, are there interesting regions? The answer is "of course." Where? This book is a start to answer just that question. Many of you know, I do enjoy cycling in France. When I am checking out a route for a new guidebook, I stop often to huff and puff if climbing, to check out a direction change for a route map, to take a drink, and always to take a picture. Over the years you and many other friends and acquaintances have asked me for something with just the photos of my travels in France, and a little about where I have been. This book is a start to address those questions. People are also interesred what Department (close to a State in the United States) or area I have been in. These Departments/areas are Burgundy, Dordogne, Lot and Tarn, Provence, Bordeaux & Pyrénées, and Cathar Country (Languedoc). Although I initially traveled to France (two-year Mediterranean deployment with the US Navy) in 1961, the following images date from 2004. From that trip through my 2014 adventure, I have taken more than six thousand photos in France. For my eight guidebooks, I included more than seventeen hundred of these photos in the text and maps. For this compilation, I selected 168 photos that got my attention. Some of these images needed an explanation. These images and comments are organized geographically.

The Greek struggle against Ottoman rule was a crucial event in the history and politics of nineteenth-century Europe. In particular it had a strong impact on the political and cultural life of France during the Bourbon Restoration, where it was appropriated and promoted as the symbolic spearhead of liberal ideas and of the growing Romantic rebellion. This book by Nina Athanassoglou-Kallmyer examines the French paintings, prints, and sculptures inspired by the Greek War of Independence. Athanassoglou-Kallmyer reinterprets important works by the foremost exponents of the Romantic movement - including Delacroix, Gericault, Horace Vernet, Ary Scheffer, and David d’Angers - showing how they viewed the Greek struggle as a setting for the opposing forces of conservatism and liberalism. She explains that, far from being mere pictorial records of specific war episodes such as the massacre at Chios or the fall of Missolonghi, images of the clashes between Greeks and Turks reflected the mottos and arguments of the French liberal propaganda echoed as well by contemporary newspapers, parliamentary debates, broadsides, pamphlets, popular plays, and poems.
