Buckley challenges scholarly, stereotypical views of females in Gnosticism, which tend either toward idealization or outright devaluation. Examining six Gnostic texts or traditions that illuminate female figures, she analyzes a variety of females within their contexts. She makes no attempt to classify Gnostic females according to simplifying formulae; rather she treats them individually, allowing them to make sense within their own contexts. The Sophia Of Jesus Christ And Eugnostos The Blessed The Divine Feminine And T written by Joseph B. Lumpkin and has been published by Fifth Estate Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014 with Religion categories.

Presented here are the Books of "The Sophia of Jesus Christ" (also called "The Wisdom of Jesus Christ") and "Eugnostos the Blessed" with extensive commentary on the ancient texts, Gnosticism, and the Divine Feminine. Gnosticism holds a special and unique place in the formation of Christianity. The theology presented by the Gnostics demands a balance of male and female "energies." In this book we will explore Gnosticism and the Divine Feminine through the lens of two great Gnostic texts. We will see the influence of Gnosticism and how their idea of the Divine Feminine effected orthodox or mainline Christianity. The treatise of "Eugnostos the Blessed" (50-150 A.D.) and the gospel called, "The Sophia of Jesus Christ," (50-200 A.D.) are presented together in a single volume, due to their close and undeniable connection. In fact, one borrowed heavily from the other. "The Sophia of Jesus Christ," also called "The Wisdom of Jesus Christ," seems to be a later and Christianized version of "Eugnostos the Blessed," a non-Christian Gnostic text. Gnosticism is complex and deserves explanation in order to better understand the texts. Extensive history, background and commentary are provided in order to reveal the inner working of Gnosticism, the place of women in their theology, and how Gnosticism influenced the Christianity of today.

Mirror Of His Beauty written by Peter Schäfer and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-06-05 with Religion categories.

In this beautifully realized study, Peter Schäfer investigates the origins of a female manifestation of God in Jewish mysticism. The search itself is a fascinating exploration of the idea of a feminine divinity. And Schäfer's surprising but persuasive conclusions yield deeper understanding of the complex but frequently intimate relationship between Christianity and Judaism--and of the development of religious concepts more generally. Toward the end of the twelfth century, a small book titled the Bahir (Light) appeared in Provence. The first document of Judaism's emerging kabbalistic movement, it introduced a completely new view of God, one that included a divine potency that was essentially female. This female divinity was portrayed both as a mediator between Jews and God and as part of the Godhead itself. Examining Judaic history from the biblical Wisdom tradition to the Middle Ages, Schäfer finds some precedents for the Kabbalah's feminine divinity. But he cannot account for her forceful appearance in twelfth-century southern France without reference to the immediate Christian environment, particularly the flourishing veneration of the Virgin Mary. Indeed, twelfth-century Jews and Christians were simultaneously rediscovering the feminine as an aspect of the Godhead after having abandoned it in favor of either an abstract, disembodied God or an exclusively male one. In proposing that the medieval cult of Mary--rather than eastern Gnosticism--is the appropriate framework for understanding the feminine elements in Jewish mysticism, Mirror of His Beauty represents a sea change in Kabbalah and Jewish-Christian cultural studies. It shifts our attention from the Byzantine East to the Latin Christian West. And in contrast to histories that treat the development of Judaism and Christianity in isolation, it leads us to a fuller understanding of Jews and Christians living in proximity, aware of each other.

Revealing Women Feminine Imagery In Gnostic Christian Texts written by Lavinia Cerioni and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-03-25 with categories.

Revealing Women' offers a detailed and textual oriented investigation of the roles and functions of female characters in Gnostic Christian mythologies. It answers questions such as: to what end did Gnostic Christian theologians employ feminine imagery in their theology? What did they want to convey through it?0This book shows that feminine imagery was a genuine concern for Gnostic theologians, and it enquires about how it was employed to describe the divine through a contextual reading of Gnostic Christian texts presenting Ophite, Sethian, Barbeloite and Valentinian 'mythologoumena' and 'theologoumena'. Overall, it argues that feminine imagery ought to be acknowledged as an important theological framework to investigate and contextualize Gnostic works by showing that these theologians used feminine imagery to exemplify those aspects of the Godhead which they considered paradoxical and, yet, essential. The claims made in the first chapters are later substantiated by an in-depth investigation of understudied Gnostic texts, such as the so-called Simonian Gnostic works, the Book of Baruch of the Gnostic teacher Justin and the Nag Hammadi treatise known as Exegesis of the Soul.

*The first comprehensive discussion of love in Western literature was provided by Plato, who using the Greek word eros, left us a book called the Symposium, which featured a number of speakers at a drinking party, each of whom gave a speech about the nature of love. Plato seems to say that love starts as a sexual passion and that it gradually transforms itself into a union in beauty, or to quote him in " the vast ocean of the beautiful". The term Platonic Love was never used by him, but was coined by a Platonist almost 2000 years later, Ficino. Unlike eros in Plato, Platonic Love is asexual, but equally involves the idea that the object of love is some kind of mystery. Its purpose is in the end a negation of eros.
