Abans del segle XVIII, hi ha algun artista conegut pel missatge polèmic de les seves obres, com ho són posteriorment Hogarth, Daumier o Goya? Si bé ningú no dubta del contingut crític d’algunes obres i de la capacitat de l’artista d’atacar, a partir d’aquest segle, a través del seu art, aquesta qüestió semblava menys clara en l’art dels segles XVI i XVII. Aquest llibre tracta de la funció crítica de les arts visuals a l’època moderna, de les obres que contenen una polèmica oberta en contra d’un personatge, una institució o un fet concret. Els segles en els quals els fastuosos programes iconogràfics realitzats pels grans artistes de cort mostraven imatges de triomf i de propaganda política i religiosa, també veieren l’esclat de les guerres de religió i de nombroses lluites i invasions arreu d’Europa. Molts d’aquests conflictes s’acompanyaren d’imatges gens afavoridores de l’enemic. El llibre recull l’existència d’un art combatiu en dates anteriors al segle XVIII i estudia les condicions de producció, difusió i recepció d’aquestes imatges. En quin context sorgiren, què n’explica l’aparició, qui les encarregà, qui les elaborà i amb quin grau de compromís, a través de quins mitjans artístics es difongueren i quines estratègies s’utilitzaren, i, finalment, qui les rebia i quin efecte podien produir, són qüestions que faciliten l’explicació del funcionament d’un episodi de la història de l’art fins ara mai plantejat de manera global des d’una perspectiva europea.

The Christian image in the process of modern globalisation Drawing on original research covering different periods and spaces, this book sets out to appreciate the specific place of images in the history of evangelisation in the long modern period. How can we reconceptualise the functions of the visual mediation of the gospel message, both in terms of the production and reception of this message and in terms of its effective mediators, artists, religious, and cultural ambassadors? The contributions in this book offer multiple geographical and historical insights regarding the circulation of the image on the global scale of the Christianised world or the world in the process of being Christianised, from China to Iberia. Combining the contribution of historians and art historians, the authors highlight the points of intercultural encounter and tension around preaching, catechesis, devotional practices and the propagandistic use of images. Through its aesthetic and social study of the image, and by examining the inner and outer borders of Europe and the mission lands, Eloquent Images contributes significantly to the history of evangelisation, one of the major dynamics of the first European globalisation.

This collection takes a new approach to understanding religious plurality in the Iberian Peninsula and its Mediterranean and northern European contexts. Focusing on polemics—works that attack or refute the beliefs of religious Others—this volume aims to challenge the problematic characterization of Iberian Jews, Muslims, and Christians as homogeneous groups. From the high Middle Ages to the end of the seventeenth century, Christian efforts to convert groups of Jews and Muslims, Muslim efforts to convert Christians and Jews, and the defensive efforts of these communities to keep their members within the faiths led to the production of numerous polemics. This volume brings together a wide variety of case studies that expose how the current historiographical focus on the three religious communities as allegedly homogeneous groups obscures the diversity within the Christian, Jewish, and Muslim communities as well as the growing ranks of skeptics and outright unbelievers. Featuring contributions from a range of academic disciplines, this paradigm-shifting book sheds new light on the cultural and intellectual dynamics of the conflicts that marked relations among these religious communities in the Iberian Peninsula and beyond. The emblem, a Renaissance literary genre which combined text and image, conveyed erudition, admonishment, propaganda, and piety with unparalleled concision and economy. It arose out of humanist circles in the early sixteenth century and quickly became established as a staple tool in religious, political, and social discourses across the major European languages. In recent years the emblem has come to be regarded by scholars working in all areas of the humanities and cultural studies as an interdisciplinary matrix of extraordinary utility in gaining insights into the mentalities and preoccupations of the early modern era. Within its apparently slender frame, the emblem embraces questions of foremost philological, semiotic, and iconographical importance, and encompasses ideas and assumptions of exceedingly far range and reach. This collection of essays attests to the pervasiveness of the emblem, both within Renaissance and Baroque Europe, and in those parts of the wider world where European influence came to bear. It seeks to follow the development of the emblem from its beginnings in various forms of bimedial artefact, from early illustrated books and hieroglyphs, to medals and ancient coins; we then witness its deployment as a propagandistic tool in the temporal and confessional disputes of Europe. Thereafter, the emblem appears in non-European contexts, emerging as a place of cultural exchange as it became assimilated within indigenous visual traditions. The latter parts of the book concentrate on the often subliminal role emblems played in diverse literary texts, as well as their ongoing vitality in praxis or in the burgeoning area of emblem scholarship within early modern studies.

La Generalitat Valenciana, nascuda fa ara sis-cents anys, va tenir quasi des dels orígens la necessitat de comptar amb una “marca corporativa”, uns elements simbòlics que la representaren, cridaren l’atenció i, d’alguna manera, ressaltaren la seua presència i la seua importància. És per això que va invertir diners i esforços per a alçar una seu monumental que posés cara a aquest nou poder que cercava fer-se lloc en la xarxa política del regne. A més, lluny de limitar-se al recinte del flamant palau, la Diputació del General va buscar també projectar la seua imatge en el territori, dissenyant emblemes propis, participant en els actes públics o finançant obres. Aquest procés és paral·lel al que altres palaus dels altres estats de la Corona d’Aragó, com els de Barcelona o Saragossa –analitzats també en aquest llibre–, van viure pels mateixos anys, quan les tres diputacions territorials estaven consolidant-se. Sobre tot això versa aquest tercer volum de la sèrie “La veu del Regne”, que se centra en els espais i les imatges de la Generalitat i que, sens dubte, ens ajudarà a comprendre millor l’herència tangible que aquesta institució, al llarg de sis segles d’existència, ha deixat als valencians.

D’ençà de la divisió d’Europa en diverses confessions, l’art es posà al servei de les doctrines dominants de cada territori. Aquest procés generà reaccions, resistències i continuïtats d’algunes litúrgies o creences. Imatge, devoció i identitat a l’època moderna desgrana l’influx de les reformes religioses en les arts visuals dels segles XVI-XVIII, sobretot al territori català i la corona hispànica, però també a les antigues terres de la Corona d’Aragó, Nàpols i Sardenya. L’obra posa l’accent en la creació de nous temes iconogràfics dins la Passió i la Vida de la Verge; els elements clau de la literatura contrareformista, que plantejà nous conceptes per a l’art; el culte marià o altres advocacions ben arrelades, com la de la Mare de Déu de Montserrat, i dedica una atenció especial a l’oratòria i la predicació. Va ser un temps en què, amb la guerra dels Segadors com a teló de fons, l’art i la religió van tenir un paper cabdal per a la configuració d’imatges i missatges ben poderosos, encara avui d’un enorme interès per al nostre passat col·lectiu.

Sometimes tragedies that have little to distinguish them from a wide range of similar events and which can make no claim to record numbers of casualties or destructive impact go down in history as fundamental and emblematic. This is the case of two of the airstrikes discussed in this volume: Barcelona and Dresden. Other tragedies, however, are sometimes obscured by circumstances elsewhere. This is the case of the “other Guernicas”: that is to say, the bombings of Otxandio, Durango and Elorrio in Biscay. They are good examples not only of the brutality inherent in all wars and of how methods of combat become increasingly barbaric as conflicts wear on but also of the way in which some circumstances push events to the forefront of history and make them emblematic.

A survivor of the 1916 torpedo attack on a Cross channel ferry, Sussex, recognised Spanish composer Granados in a lifeboat, his wife in the water. Granados dived in to save her and perished. Subsequently, the Sussex incident became a pawn in the propaganda battle of WW1. Extensive research into family involvement in WW1 put Walton in possession of historical detail not generally known. He assisted American novelist John Milton to obtain background material for 'The Fallen Nightingale'. Walton subsequently wrote his own account of the composer's unhappy final journey.This is the truth behind the story. David Walton graduated in Modern Languages at University College, London, and undertook further studies at the University of Florence and at Trinity College of Music. He worked for some years as a Civil Servant, notably at the port of Folkestone, where he became very familiar with cross-Channel ferries between England and France. Book includes translations in Spanish and Catalan.

Lluís Bonet i Garí (el Cros, Argentona, 1893 - Barcelona, 1993), deixeble d'Antoni Gaudí, va ser un dels arquitectes continuadors del temple de la Sagrada Família. Després del 1939 va prendre part en activitats a favor de la cultura catalana. Les sessions de l'Institut d'Estudis Catalans es feren a casa seva del 1941 al 1959. Quan el 1962 va morir la seva esposa, Maria Mercè Armengol, ell va començar a col·leccionar-ne les imatges, de cada any. Aquest volum aplega les reflexions de Lluís Bonet sobre la seva esposa, la família, la fe, i també sobre tot allò que passava a Catalunya en aquells temps convulsos. El desenvolupament de l’economia catalana del darrer terç del set-cents va propulsar una important transformació social i cultural en els sectors més actius, representatius i poderosos del moment. Va generar una etapa de benestar econòmic que va beneficiar l’activitat constructiva i la producció artística, vinculada als nous corrents estilístics europeus. Així, es van remodelar i decorar les estances privades i públiques de palaus i cases de l’aristocràcia, l’alta burgesia i les jerarquies eclesiàstiques, de manera molt semblant a altres zones de l’àrea mediterrània, sobretot Roma, Nàpols i Palerm, ciutats amb què ens uneixen forts lligams històrics i artístics. Encara que poc coneguts, a Barcelona n’hi ha valuosos exemples, un patrimoni que, en alguns casos, es troba permanentment en risc, sotmès a destruccions, modificacions i restauracions poc sensibles.
