Tem a obra o propósito de mostrar a ideia de pertencimento dos imigrantes brasileiros em relação à sociedade paraguaia, focando questões como identidade cultural e nacional e hibridismo cultural, a fim de perceber as diferenças entre uma geração e outra no que tange aos limites e possibilidades da inter-relação social de cada geração com a sociedade receptora, além de mostrar ao leitor como essas famílias de imigrantes foram estabelecendo e/ ou construindo os espaços de convivência e inter-relação social, construída ao longo dos anos. Inter-relações estas resultantes do contato com a vizinhança, formando comunidades articuladas de convivência e múltiplas sociabilidades. O destaque se dá ao fato de que à medida que essas comunidades cresceram, passaram a ter a participação da sociedade paraguaia, o que estabeleceu e estreitou novos laços de sociabilidade interétnica ao longo de algumas décadas. A intenção é mostrar ao leitor que no ambiente das sociabilidades a aproximação interétnica vem ocorrendo de forma gradativa, fato implícito na medida em que se observa, entre outras coisas, o casamento interétnico. Enfim, dar visibilidade à realidade social experienciada pelos descendentes de imigrantes brasileiros no Paraguai, que consideram como sua terra natal e cuja identidade lhes é própria, com suas representações e dilemas em seu contexto de inserção social. Registraram-se informações que demonstram o cotidiano dos primeiros tempos da imigração, com a formação de suas propriedades, ressaltando o convívio sociocultural com a sociedade paraguaia. Os espaços estudados mostraram-se privilegiados para a análise das interações, adaptações, conflitos, ideologias e a pluralidade cultural como elemento de identidade e síntese, mas também as transformações no campo da cultura imaterial. Evidenciam-se, no cotidiano, características da construção e reconstrução de identidades e alteridades, neste entrecruzamento de culturas. É uma história criada e recriada neste novo espaço de convivência.

This book is the fruition of work from contributors to the Art and Cartography: Cartography and Art symposium held in Vienna in February 2008. This meeting brought together cartographers who were interested in the design and aesthetics elements of cartography and artists who use maps as the basis for their art or who incorporate place and space in their expressions. The outcome of bringing together these like minds culminated in a wonderful event, spanning three evenings and two days in the Austrian capital. Papers, exhi- tions and installations provided a forum for appreciating the endeavors of artists and cartographers and their representations of geography. As well as indulging in an expansive and expressive occasion attendees were able to re? ect on their own work and discuss similar elements in each other’s work. It also allowed cartographers and artists to discuss the potential for collaboration in future research and development. To recognise the signi? cance of this event, paper authors were invited to further develop their work and contribute chapters to this book. We believe that this book marks both a signi? cant occasion in Vienna and a starting point for future collabo- tive efforts between artists and cartographers. The editors would like to acknowledge the work of Manuela Schmidt and Felix Ortag, who undertook the task of the design and layout of the chapters.

Brazil, a country that has always received immigrants, only rarely saw its own citizens move abroad. Beginning in the late 1980s, however, thousands of Brazilians left for the United States, Japan, Portugal, Italy, and other nations, propelled by a series of intense economic crises. By 2009 an estimated three million Brazilians were living abroad—about 40 percent of them in the United States. Goodbye, Brazil is the first book to provide a global perspective on Brazilian emigration. Drawing and synthesizing data from a host of sociological and anthropological studies, preeminent Brazilian immigration scholar Maxine L. Margolis surveys and analyzes this greatly expanded Brazilian diaspora, asking who these immigrants are, why they left home, how they traveled abroad, how the Brazilian government responded to their exodus, and how their host countries received them. Margolis shows how Brazilian immigrants, largely from the middle rungs of Brazilian society, have negotiated their ethnic identity abroad. She argues that Brazilian society abroad is characterized by the absence of well-developed, community-based institutions—with the exception of thriving, largely evangelical Brazilian churches. Margolis looks to the future as well, asking what prospects at home and abroad await the new generation, children of Brazilian immigrants with little or no familiarity with their parents' country of origin. Do Brazilian immigrants develop such deep roots in their host societies that they hesitate to return home despite Brazil's recent economic boom—or have they become true transnationals, traveling between Brazil and their adopted lands but feeling not quite at home in either one?

A cada tentativa de integração civilizadora, nossas sociedades são tragadas pela voragem do atraso que as mantêm presas à desigualdade, à falta de liberdade e à injustiça. Por quê? No intuito de responder a inquietações que retornaram com força depois do desmanche da "onda progressista", Fabio Luis Barbosa dos Santos procura, a partir de rica pesquisa de campo e de entrevistas, além de amplo domínio da literatura especializada, sintetizar o que ocorreu nas últimas duas décadas. Ao analisar as contradições e os dilemas dos governos progressistas, o autor mostra que, apesar das particularidades de cada país, há características comuns: os presidentes não romperam com o legado macroeconômico das ditaduras; com pequenos piparotes na desigualdade, fortaleceram o capitalismo, deixando de cumprir promessas de integração social substantiva; levados ao poder pela insatisfação do campo popular com as políticas de ajuste neoliberais, canalizaram a revolta para demandas institucionais de pequeno resultado; e, por fim, se aproveitaram da acumulação por espoliação, surfando no consenso das commodities sem atentar para a predação socioambiental daí decorrente. Em suma, enfraqueceram o campo popular e incrementaram a inserção subordinada e passiva de seus países no mercado mundial, em nome de uma política de esquerda. É fácil entender que a volta da direita ao poder não é um raio em céu azul. Fabio Luis conclui que a derrocada da onda progressista atesta mais uma vez que, dado o caráter antinacional, antipopular, antidemocrático e predatório das classes dominantes no continente, a única alternativa civilizatória para a América Latina é o socialismo. Não por acaso, o último país analisado neste livro é Cuba. Seus dilemas são os dilemas do socialismo hoje. Ao mapear o debate público aberto em 2016 sobre os rumos da revolução, o autor mostra sem preconceitos nem idealizações os problemas enfrentados pela ilha, isolada no oceano do capitalismo global, assim como os limites da Revolução Cubana. Das reflexões de Fabio resta uma advertência: a alternativa civilizatória para Nossa América, que vá além do canto de sereia do consumo, está num projeto socialista humanista fundado em valores como igualdade, liberdade e participação popular, combinando direitos universais com relações mercantis disciplinadas por um Estado soberano. Mas é sabido que mesmo uma proposta reformista tão modesta continua tabu absoluto para os donos do poder.
