Das Frage-Buch von Reinhard Brandt beginnt mit einer fulminanten Entdeckung: Die Raum-Zeit-Lehre der Kritik der reinen Vernunft enthält als Subtext einen Gottesbeweis. Welche Rolle spielt die Theologie in der Grundlage der kritischen Philosophie? Rettet sie die Anwendung der euklidischen Geometrie auf den Raum der reinen Anschauung? - Der zweistufige kategorische Imperativ ist konzipiert auf der Folie der Stufung von »status naturalis« der Maximen und »status civilis« der autonomen Gesetzgebung, er zielt auf keine Verallgemeinerung oder Universalisierung der Maxime (wozu auch?), sondern auf die Freiheit unter der eigenen Gesetzgebung. Ist jedoch die Gleichsetzung von sittlicher Freiheit und Gesetzgebung haltbar, oder gibt es in Extremsituationen eine Erlaubnis und gar eine Pflicht zu lügen? - Ist Kants Definition eines empirischen Naturprodukts in der »Kritik der teleologischen Urteilskraft« möglich, gemäß der alles in ihm Mittel und Zweck ist? - Kann der Vertrag in der »Rechtslehre« als Besitz der Willkür eines anderen gefasst werden oder scheitert Kants Innovation an inneren Widersprüchen? Ist das Kantische Ehe- und Strafrecht zu retten? Unhinterschreitbar sind die Prinzipien der Aufklärung und der Würde des Menschen. Wie sind sie genau begründet? In seinem neuen Buch geht es Reinhard Brandt nicht um die Bewahrung des Kantischen Erbes, sondern um das, was – mit Kant und im Anschluss an ihn – auch heute noch zu denken bleibt! Der Fragen-Traktat folgt also einer Tradition, die mit der Publikation der »Kritiken« beginnt und in die Zukunft weiter gereicht wird. Im Gegensatz zu poetischen Werken wird in philosophischen Abhandlungen etwas Theoretisches behauptet und begründet, und mit der Begründung wird der Leser aufgefordert, der Argumentation kritisch zu folgen und sie zu akzeptieren oder sie mit Gründen abzulehnen. Eben dies wird in diesem Traktat bei einigen ausgewählten Lehrstücken Kants versucht und damit nichts anderes getan, als die Rolle zu spielen, die der Autor seinem philosophisch interessierten Leser zuweist.

Nach Kant liegt der Zweck der menschlichen Existenz in der Moral und damit der Freiheit, auf sie richtet sich unser gesamtes Vernunftinteresse. Aus diesem gut bezeugten Zentrum werden in der vorliegenden Untersuchung die kopernikanische Wende, die Geschichtsphilosophie und vor allem die drei Kritiken interpretiert; dass die Kritik der reinen Vernunft sich als republikanischer Gerichtshof artikuliert, ist in der Leitidee der moralischen Bestimmung des Menschen begründet. Kants Wirkung beruhte auf dem Freiheitspathos, mit dem er sich gegen die Bevormundung durch die Despoten und eine scholastisch verwaltete Metaphysik stellte. Im letzten Kapitel, »Die Vierte Kritik«, werden Äußerungen untersucht, gemäß denen eine neue Kritik der reinen Vernunft die drei Kritiken der Vernunft bzw. des Verstandes (1781), der Urteilskraft (1790) und der praktischen Vernunft (1788) in ihrer Vollständigkeit begründen sollte; es wird gezeigt, dass dieses Projekt Kant notwendig schien, aber zugleich nicht durchführbar war.

Kant's Observations of 1764 and Remarks of 1764-5 (a set of fragments written in the margins of his copy of the Observations) document a crucial turning point in his life and thought. The idea of a final end of human conduct – the highest good – plays an important role in Kant’s philosophy. Unlike his predecessors Kant defines the highest good as a combination of two heterogeneous elements, namely virtue and happiness. This conception lies at the centre of some of the most influential Kantian doctrines such as his famous “moral argument” for the rationality of faith, his conception of the unity of reason and his views concerning the final end of nature as well as the historical progress of mankind. To be sure, the different treatments of the highest good in Kant’s work have led to a great deal of discussion among his readers. Besides Kant’s arguments for moral faith, recent debate has focused on the place of the highest good within Kant’s moral theory, on the antinomy of pure practical reason, and on the idea of the primacy of practical reason.
