El papel de Roma como foco de atracción de estudiosos y visitantes a través de las peregrinaciones, y la capacidad del humanismo en despertar el gusto por lo antiguo y el deseo de poseer objetos dio lugar a la ciencia arqueológica, que logrará su pleno desarrollo en los siglos XIX y XX. Desde muy temprano los papas desarrollan normativas conducentes a evitar la destrucción y exportación de bienes arqueológicos, llevados por la importancia simbólica que para el papado tenia la antigüedad entendida como garante de la herencia o donación constantiniana. Durante todo el siglo XVIII se sucederán las medidas de tutela con continuos edictos y prohibiciones en un intento, la mayoría de las veces malogrado, de evitar la sangría de objetos. Se procurará controlar el tráfico y las ventas y se crearan cargos como los de Commissario e Ispettore, que en la práctica constituirá la primera administración de los bienes arqueológicos. Pero el gran detonante de la tutela será la presa napoleónica, contando el pontificado con hombres ilustrados que llevan a cabo una profunda reorganización de la tutela. La gran pieza jurídica será el Editto Pacca (1822), que ordenará, la gestión, tutela y protección de los bienes culturales en todo el territorio pontificio. Una evolución que comenzó en el pontificado de León X y que fue conformando una conciencia sobre el interés general de los objetos del pasado.

The legacy of late medieval Franciscan thought is uncontested: for generations, the influence of late-13th and 14th century Franciscans on the development of modern thought has been celebrated by some and loathed by others. However, the legacy of early Franciscan thought, as it developed in the first generation of Franciscan thinkers who worked at the recently-founded University of Paris in the first half of the 13th century, is a virtually foreign concept in the relevant scholarship. The reason for this is that early Franciscans are widely regarded as mere codifiers and perpetrators of the earlier medieval, largely Augustinian, tradition, from which later Franciscans supposedly departed. In this study, leading scholars of both periods in the Franciscan intellectual tradition join forces to highlight the continuity between early and late Franciscan thinkers which is often overlooked by those who emphasize their discrepancies in terms of methodology and sources. At the same time, the contributors seek to paint a more nuanced picture of the tradition’s legacy to Western thought, highlighting aspects of it that were passed down for generations to follow as well as the extremely different contexts and ends for which originally Franciscan ideas came to be employed in later medieval and modern thought.

Seleccionar un conjunto de obras que sinteticen la prolífica actividad del Prof. Campos supone un esfuerzo ímprobo, pues son bien conocidas la versatilidad y maestría desarrolladas a lo largo de su trayectoria en los distintos periodos cronológicos, temáticas y ámbitos que ha tenido ocasión de tratar. De ahí que la selección que se presenta quede articulada según la significación que cada una de las aportaciones ha tenido para el devenir posterior de la investigación en sus respectivos periodos, desde la arqueología protohistórica a la moderna pasando, por supuesto, por la arqueología romana y medieval, entre otros. En consecuencia, para la confección de esta opera minora selecta, se ha adoptado una solución en la que se conjugan las obras en solitario del Prof. Campos, su gran mayoría, junto con aportaciones firmadas colectivamente con otros colegas y destacados discípulos, pero encabezadas y lideradas por él; siempre en la búsqueda de un equilibrio de su producción científica entre las distintas líneas y periodos culturales. En última instancia, con esta premisa de partida, queda de manifiesto en su producción el espíritu de equipo, formativo y de liderazgo que el Prof. Campos ha cultivado desde sus comienzos.
