Cette thèse étudie l'influence de la diversité des tactiques d'histoire de vie sur la dynamique des populations de deux salmonidés à migration partielle: le saumon Atlantique, Salmo salar et la truite commune, Salmo trutta. Ces deux espèces ont de fortes valeurs écologique et économique, mais les rôles respectifs des individus résidents et migrateurs sur la dynamique et la résilience des populations à des changements environnementaux demeurent méconnus. Nous avons abordé ces questions par des approches démographiques, génétiques et de modélisation. Nous avons démontré que la détermination de la tactique d'histoire de vie est en partie plastique et permet aux individus juvéniles de migrer en réponse à un changement de l'environnement. De plus, cette thèse démontre que la diversité des tactiques permet aux populations à migration partielle de bénéficier d'un changement favorable de l'environnement et de réduire l'effet d'un changement défavorable sur la dynamique de populationCes deux processus pourraient expliquer la plus forte résilience des populations à migration partielle face aux variations environnementales par rapport aux populations strictement résidentes ou migratrices. Toutefois, étant donné les différences de stratégies chez le saumon Atlantique et la truite commune, nos résultats suggèrent que la truite a une meilleure capacité de réponse aux changements environnementaux et un niveau de résilience plus élevé que le saumon Atlantique.

@La pêche est une importante source de mortalité chez les populations exploitées et peut donc induire des changements adaptatifs chez celles-ci. Ces réponses portent notamment sur les traits d’histoire de vie, qui affectent eux-mêmes la dynamique des stocks et peuvent donc altérer l’effet démographique direct de la pêche (i.e. la réduction de la biomasse des stocks). Les changements adaptatifs induits par la pêche reposent, de manière non exclusive, sur deux processus : l’évolution et la plasticité phénotypique. Ces deux composantes sont observées au niveau phénotypique, car les gènes fonctionnels codant pour les traits subissant des changements adaptatifs n’ont pas été identifiés à ce jour. Or, ces deux origines possibles sont confondues dans les phénotypes des individus, et l’impact à long terme des changements adaptatifs demeure donc incertain : la réversibilité des changements d’ordre évolutif est supposée lente et/ou complexe, alors que les changements plastiques peuvent en principe s’inverser totalement en une génération. De plus, puisqu’elle diminue la taille des populations, la pêche peut également accélérer la dérive génétique affectant la composition génétique à la fois neutre et fonctionnelle des populations exploitées. Cette thèse porte sur les changements adaptatifs des traits d’histoire de vie induits pas la pêche, l’accent étant mis sur l’âge et la taille à maturation, et s’appuie sur les gadidés de mer du Nord pris comme cas d’étude. Elle comprend quatre parties. Le chapitre 1 introduit les gadidés de mer du Nord, dont quatre espèces (morue, aiglefin, merlan et tacaud norvégien) servent d’espèces modèles tout au long de la thèse. Ce chapitre présente brièvement la systématique, l’histoire de vie, la biologie et l’écologie de ces espèces ainsi que l’écosystème de mer du Nord. Le chapitre 2 est une étude théorique de l’évolution de la norme de réaction pour la maturation sous l’influence de la co-variation environnementale entre le taux de croissance et la mortalité individuelle, cette co-variation étant due à différents types de relations (positive et négative, linéaire et non-linéaire, déterministe et probabiliste). Les résultats montrent que l’âge à maturation évolutivement optimal est la somme de composantes densité-indépendante et densité-dépendante, et que, le long de toute trajectoire de croissance individuelle, les individus deviennent matures plus jeunes quand la mortalité est plus forte. Ce résultat permet de déduire comment les formes des normes de réactions évolutivement stables pour la maturation dépendent de la co-variation entre croissance et mortalité. Cette partie a été publiée dans The American Naturalist (Marty, L., U. Dieckmann, M. J. Rochet, and B. Ernande. 2011. Impact of environmental covariation in growth and mortality on evolving maturation reaction norms. The American Naturalist 177:E98-E118). Le chapitre 3 présente un cas d’étude empirique. Son objectif est de distinguer l’origine plastique ou évolutive des changements temporels de l’âge et de la taille à maturation de quatre espèces de gadidés de mer du Nord (la morue, l’aiglefin, le merlan et le Tacaud norvégien). Des séries temporelles de données couvrant la période de 1971 à 2005 sont analysées en utilisant le concept de norme de réaction probabiliste pour la maturation. Les résultats suggèrent, ou appuient l’hypothèse que les changements subis par les normes de réaction ne peuvent pas être expliqués en totalité par des facteurs environnementaux, et qu’une évolution de la maturation est plausible pour la morue et l’églefin, mais pas pour le merlan et le tacaud norvégien. En accord avec les prédictions théoriques, la réponse de la maturation semble varier en fonction de la stratégie d’histoire de vie des espèces, suggérant des changements plus importants des espèces à croissance rapide, maturation tardive et manifestant un effort reproducteur modéré. Cette partie a été soumise à Evolutionary - iii - Applications, et rejetée avec une invitation à soumettre une version corrigée. Les corrections seront faite durant l’été 2011.Le chapitre 4 analyse de façon théorique l’interaction entre évolution neutre et évolution adaptative dans le contexte de la pêche, ainsi que l’utilisation des marqueurs neutres pour inférer les propriétés écologiques relative à la structure démographique de la population. Ceci est réalisé en développant une modèle prenant en compte les changements temporels de la distribution de loci neutres et fonctionnels dans un cadre écologique réaliste. Les résultats indiquent que la pêche réduit la diversité génétique neutre, mesurée par la taille efficace de populations, et que cette réduction est linéairement associée aux diminutions de plusieurs propriétés démographiques importantes (taille de population, nombre d’individus matures, recrutement, biomasse reproductrice et fécondité totale de la population). De plus, la pêche induit une érosion du potentiel adaptatif par dérive génétique, en combinaison ou non avec la sélection, ce qui empêche le rétablissement des traits d’histoire de vie à leurs valeurs initiales quand la pression de pêche disparaît. Dans la synthèse, je compare les variations théorique (chapitre 2 et 4) et empirique (chapitre 3) des normes de réaction pour la maturation obtenues dans cette thèse. Les principaux résultats indiquent que l’évolution induite par la pêche est l’hypothèse la plus vraisemblable pour la morue et l’aiglefin de mer du Nord et que la diversité génétique à la fois neutre et fonctionnelle pourrait avoir été érodée par la pêche. Ces résultats permettent de comparer différentes options de gestion connues pour leur efficacité dans l’atténuation des effets évolutifs, et de discuter leur application aux stocks de gadidés de mer du Nord.

The Middle East and North Africa region is well-known for its abundant natural resources and important geostrategic position. This position is often overshadowed by continued sectarian violence and trans-boundary conflicts that threaten the stability of the entire region with serious global implications. This preoccupation with conflict has come at the expense of addressing the region’s other challenges. Although the region’s fragile environmental state has increasingly preoccupied policymakers in individual countries, there is currently insufficient attention paid to coordinating collaborative action to recognise and address problems relating to its environmental sustainability and climatic change. In the absence of a positive agenda for tackling these issues, recurrent environmental setbacks and rapid depletion of the region’s natural resources continue to pose a major threat to the long-term economic, political, and social stability of the region. Despite the urgency of these challenges, there is little research dedicated to studying MENA’s environmental sustainability. Environmental Challenges in the MENA Region: The Long Road from Conflict to Cooperation draws from the proceedings of a seminal international conference on the subject at SOAS in October 2016, which was held as a celebration of the SOAS Centenary. This led to a collective contribution by experts and policy-makers concerned with the state of the MENA region’s environmental predicament with the aim of addressing these problems in a constructive and forward-looking approach. The chapters in this book are predicated upon two critical premises. First, expertise and awareness from a wide range of disciplines is required to understand and address environmental challenges. And, second, to have a real chance of success, MENA countries need to confront these problems as their common threats and to see them as an opportunity for regional cooperation and policy coordination.
