Tuber Crops play a critical role in fulfilling the multifaceted needs of the people contributing to food security and poverty eradication. Cassava is considered as the king of tropical tuber crops as it occupies a significant position in the global agricultural economy and trade amongst the tuber crops. Cassava is an important industrial crop of Tamil Nadu, occupies first position in the production (0.065 t) in India. In Tamil Nadu, Salem district has the highest area (27007 ha). Even though the area is high in Salem, the scientific way of cultivation of cassava among the socially backward cassava growers was low compared to other farmers. Target on this farming community was made and several cassava projects were implemented by Govt. of India to educate and enhance scientific way of cassava cultivation. Present study was focused to analysis the depth of projects success. Research was concentrated on various dimensions like knowledge gain, increase in adoption level, impact of the interventions and its outcomes were discussed. The study throws light on the state of the cassava growers in Salem and forecasts the ways and means to enhance their potentiality.

The importance of Cassava in the food systems of Ghanaians cannot be underestimated. As a main staple crop, Cassava contributes about 22% and 30% to the Agricultural Gross Domestic Product (AGDP) and daily calories intake respectively. Per capita consumption of 152¬†kg makes it the highest among all food crops. Due to Cassava,Äôs importance, there have been lots of attention paid to it by the Government and Donor agencies towards its improvement. This has yielded substantial results in terms of the development of cassava varieties and good agronomic practices. This chapter reviewed cassava technologies development in Ghana, adoption of these technologies by smallholder farmers, and livelihood implications. Results generated showed that Research and Development since 1993 has developed, released, and disseminated 25 new cassava varieties to smallholder farmers. Average cassava yields have increased from about 14¬†t/ha in 2009 to 21¬†t/ha in 2018. Partial budget analysis showed that smallholder farmers,Äô profitability has increased over the years from GH,ǵ644.32 (about US$ 111) in 2009 to GH,ǵ5243.27 (about US$ 904) in 2018. Again, the crop is gradually gaining attention as an industrial crop for flour, starch, and alcohol production, a drive that would further improve on returns to farmers. It is a food security crop because it is robust, produces more per unit area, and versatile for multiple usages in household foods and derivatives. It is recommended that continuous policy consideration on cassava in national agricultural agenda setting is essential.

The generalized AIDS epidemic in Zimbabwe resulted in several responses by organisations including the cassava and sweetpotato intervention. The intervention was centred on improving the food security and income of HIV/AIDS affected households. The case study explored the contribution of these crops in reducing household vulnerability to the impact of AIDS. Cassava and sweetpotato were confirmed to be labour extensive which made them important to labour constrained HIV/AIDS affected households. However the contribution of these crops to food security and income was negatively impacted by the loss of assets related to HIV/AIDS morbidity and mortality. Drought further worsened the ability of households to produce food. The sustainable livelihood framework was adapted for data anlysis. The study revealed that the AIDS epidemic negatively affected the livelihood capitals which further undermined the impact of the intervention. However, further support to improve sweetpotato production would strengthen the strategy employed by HIV/AIDS affected households of exchanging sweetpotato with maize the staple crop.

Cassava yield in the Lake Zone, Tanzania is 60% below the potential yield due to soil infertility, diseases and pests. Recently cassava production in the Lake Zone has been affected by cassava mosaic disease (CMD) which is spread by whiteflies. This study was carried out to evaluate the effects of intercropping cassava with legumes on cassava performance, fertility improvement and whitefly control in Misungwi district, Mwanza region, Tanzania. Cassava intercropping with green gram or cowpeas is recommended based on their abilities to improve soil fertility, reduce whitefly populations and CMD attack, and higher economic returns. Improved cassava varieties intercropped with legumes would be the most appropriate measure for sustainable cassava production.

The purpose of this case study is to document the development and testing of a gender-sensitive tool for impact evaluation of agricultural technology appropriate to conditions in Kenya. This tool, a modified Gender Analysis Matrix (GAM), was tested by KARI researchers from Kisii Regional Research Center and during an ex-ante evaluation of introduced pest-resistant cassava varieties in Migori district. Eight aspects of cassava production - labour, time, tools, land, cash, funds, food and social standing were included in the matrix. Men and women of different age categories examined these for possible changes in access to and control over the resources. Results indicated that as a result of the new technology, labour burdens would increase for young men and women of all categories while control over their labor will decrease. Conversely, it is anticipated that adult men will provide less labour, have greater access and exert more control over the resource in nearly all resource categories. Adult women stand to gain more access to most of the resources investigated, but it was unclear whether there would be an increase in control over these resources, especially land and cash. These and other results obtained directly from farmers and analyzed using the GAM during the exercise gave researchers a clear understanding of differential impacts of this new technology on men and women farmers. The case discusses the utility of this gender-sensitive approach in ex ante impact of this and other technology. It also offers conclusions and recommendations for the use of the tool.

Sustainable Cassava: Production, Processing, Trade, Consumption and Waste Management Strategies presents viable approaches to promote sustainability in this globally important crop, enabling future generations to benefit. Providing key insights to enhance production while limiting environmental impact, this book provides readers with foundational understanding of growing and utilizing Cassava. Cassava (Manihot Mill. species Euphorbiaceae) is a staple crop in tropical and subtropical regions of the world with diverse food and non-food value. It is a principal energy source but may be fortified to provide improved nutritional status for consumers as well as for the production of value-added products. With the growing human population, there is a need to increase global production and efficiency in trade, diversify and ensure safe consumption, maximize utilization of all cassava processing wastes, and add value to the cassava production chain through sustainable practices Presented in three parts, the first addresses cassava diversity and distribution, sustainable production and cultivation practices, and root processing innovations of the crop. Cassava trade policies and economic value chains, food safety and use of cassava, and agro-industrial cassava products are addressed in the second part. The third part focuses on bioeconomy aspects, cassava waste quality assessment, toxicology, sanitary practices, environmental risk assessment as well as sustainable management strategies for cassava waste using biotechnological and industrial advances. Addressing the need for a unified and standardized approach for the trade, management, and utilization of cassava genetic resources, finished products, and cassava processing wastes, the book also explores policy and governance structure for addressing environmental and economic issues emanating from their use. In the lens of globalization, climate change adaptation and mitigation, and sustainable development, the contents of this book will promote the adoption of novel and advanced practices in cassava cultivation and production, harvest, use, and waste recovery or reduction and contribute to global cooling efforts. Presents best practices and ideas from around the world, including technological advances for Cassava production and use Focuses on sustainability throughout the lifecycle Provides insights translatable to other tuber crops for further enhanced sustainable food security

Soil erosion is a threat to the productivity of smallholder operations engaged in agriculture in sloped regions of Vietnam. Developing and evaluating alternative systems to combat soil erosion is important to maintain yields and incomes in these upland regions. Cassava is typically grown on these slopes, as it can survive in low nutrient soils; however, nutrient loss through soil erosion can lead to substantial cassava yield declines over time with repeated production. The International Center for Tropical Agriculture directed an intervention in 1999 to understand the agronomic effects of soil erosion minimization techniques to increase cassava yields, incomes, and improve smallholder livelihoods in Southeast Asia. Smallholder cassava growers in Văn Yên District, Vietnam were participants in that initial intervention. Growers in this region adopted the technique of growing Paspalum atratum grass strips on hedgerows to minimize soil erosion. Our research is a follow-up study of this initial intervention in Văn Yên to compare the grass strip system to the traditional monocrop system to understand the impact on soil erosion, yields, and economic profitability.
