Reviews the poverty measuring practices, available measures of poverty, and economic growth figures of Nepal. The poverty rates for FY 1976-77, 1984-85, and 1995-96 are found to be not comparable due to change in methodology over time. The three poverty rates average 40%. Nepal has experienced high economic growth during the 7th (1985-86 to 1989-90) and 8th (1992-93 to 1996-97) Plan periods with no strong evidences of poverty reduction. This incompatible result is partially explained by comparing growth of the agricultural sector with the role of the sector in providing employment and income generation at the household level, and by comparing social indicators particularly literacy rate with the growth of the nonagricultural sector. This study investigate the impact of government expenditure on economic growth in Nepal. Annual series data between 2002/03 to 2015/16 is used for the study. Economic growth is dependent variable whereas, total capital expenditure, total recurrent expenditure, agriculture, non-agriculture, industry, service and inflation are independent variables. The major objective of the study is to examine the effect of different component of government expenditure in economic growth in context to Nepal. Data are collected from economic survey of Nepal. The tools of analysis are the regression model between the variables, DW Test and for multicollonearity between the variables, VIF test is used. The empirical result shows that there is positive correlation between the dependent variable economic growth and the predictors like agricultural, non-agricultural, industry and service sector. Whereas, total current and recurrent expenditure and inflation are negatively related to economic growth. The beta coefficient is positively significantly for agricultural, non-agricultural, industry, and service sector, it implies that higher the investment in agricultural and non-agricultural sector higher would be economic growth. Similarly, higher the investment on industry and service sector of the country, higher would be economic growth. More specifically, the value of D-W value is 1.301 which implies that there is no autocorrelation between the variables.

Master's Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Economics - Case Scenarios, grade: Very good, University of Glasgow (Adam Smith Business School), course: Master of Science in Economic Development, language: English, abstract: This research uses time-series data to examine the impact of international remittance flow on economic growth and poverty reduction in Nepal. It applies the econometric model suggested by Ravallion (2001), Ravallion and Chen (1997) and Adam and Page (2005) for remittance and poverty and Quayyum et al (2008) for remittance and growth. Both micro and macro level impacts were considered. The regression results show that remittance flow is positively and significantly correlated with economic growth and poverty reduction in Nepalese context. The finding suggests that in the short run international remittance flow had positive contribution in economic growth and poverty reduction through investments in health, education and consumption. Remittance also contributed to relax credit constraints, especially for the poor and in macro level, helped to finance trade deficit, accumulate foreign exchange reserves and to reduce government debt. However, a deeper analysis of the last two decades shows that increased remittance flow has been the major cause of decline of tradable sector through „Dutch Disease‟ effects. Moreover, remittance contributed to higher inflation, eroded work habits and brought adverse social costs. Combined, the long term impact of remittance seems to be overwhelmingly negative in Nepal.

Using two rounds of nationally representative household survey data in this study, the authors measure the impact on poverty in Nepal of local and international migration for work. They apply an instrumental variable approach to deal with nonrandom selection of migrants and simulate various scenarios for the different levels of work-related migration, comparing observed and counterfactual household expenditure distribution. The results indicate that one-fifth of the poverty reduction in Nepal occurring between 1995 and 2004 can be attributed to increased levels of work-related migration and remittances sent home. The authors also show that while the increase in work migration abroad was the leading cause of this poverty reduction, internal migration also played an important role. The findings show that strategies for economic growth and poverty reduction in Nepal should consider aspects of the dynamics of domestic and international migration.

This volume brings together frontline research on the prospects for rapid economic development in South Asia by leading academics and public policy experts. It reviews recent macroeconomic performance in Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka and examines three emergent challenges for the Indian economy: devising a policy response to climate change, attaining the millennium development goals and restructuring state level finances. The book then analyzes financial sector reforms and development of information and communications technology (ICT) firms and privatization policy in India and the South Asian approach to free trade arrangements and multilateral trade. It studies issues related to foreign perceptions of South Asian development including governance and foreign direct investment flows into India and Nepal. Finally the book studies the impact of the structural composition of economic growth on poverty in India, the evolution of inequality in India and elements of a strategy for poverty reduction in South Asia.
