The Covid-19 pandemic is a worldwide public health emergency that disrupted the international education sector at an unprecedented scale. Not only has the Covid-19 pandemic caused this enrolment decline, but it has led to an unprecedented shift to remote learning in higher education. The dramatic changes in teaching and learning activities significantly affected the experience of current international students who study onshore or offshore at universities overseas.This project presents the outcomes of a mixed-methods study on the learning experiences of Chinese international students enrolled in Australian universities during the pandemic of Covid-19 in 2020 and 2021. Following an analysis of the Australian and Chinese international education policies during the pandemic, and a review of relevant literature in the last two years, we surveyed 200 Chinese international students and further interviewed 25 of them in 6 focus groups. The participants provided valuable insights into 1) factors that motivated them to continue their studies during Covid-19; 2) problems and strategies for online learning; 3) opportunities and challenges they encountered; and 4) support they wanted for future learning.This project concludes that while the negative impacts of Covid-19 are evident, one should not deny the efforts made by both teachers and students, and the new learning opportunities brought to class by innovative adaptation strategies. It is important for us to develop a more comprehensive understanding of Chinese international students who have bravely embarked on their journey during the pandemic.

COVID-19 has resulted in disruptions to schooling for the vast majority of Australian school children. Universities and other post-secondary education providers have also seen widespread shifts to remote learning, and considerable impacts on school funding. While there have undoubtedly been negative impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on education institutions, students and their families, the crisis has at the same time created an opportunity to reflect on the role of education in a society like Australia's. In this paper we provide a summary of survey data on the experiences of students and their families during the pandemic, as well as attitudes of the entire Australian population to the role of schools and universities. We found 47.8 per cent, or almost one-in-two Australians were very satisfied with their child's educational institution, while 40.2 per cent were somewhat satisfied. Only a small percentage of the population were not satisfied with their child's education, with a slightly higher per cent of adult learners not being satisfied with their own education. Despite this high level of satisfaction, the paper also shows that a large number parents or adult learners were concerned about their own learning or their children's learning. [Abstract]

This report analyses the funding trends of Australia's university sector over the past decade. It is published as Australia's higher education sector faces an unprecedented set of challenges due to the impact of coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The report includes modelling of the projected impact on international student revenue of Australia's border being closed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The report's key findings include: modelling suggests that Australia's universities face a cumulative loss of between $10 billion to $19 billion from 2020-2023 because of the collapse in international student revenue. The COVID-19 response also impacts on future domestic student demand. It is important to change current policy settings to increase capacity across the tertiary sector. Before the impact of COVID-19, Australia's investment in higher education had increased 43.6% in real terms between 2008 and 2018. The increase in investment in the higher education sector was driven by the large increase in international student revenue and the introduction of demand driven funding for universities. Despite increases over the past decade, funding for domestic students has plateaued and participation rates for domestic students in higher education are decreasing for the first time in over 10 years. This book calls into question the colonial and neoliberal university, presenting alternative models of higher education that can more effectively respond to today’s intersecting social, economic, environmental and political crises. The authors argue that universities should be driven by a different set of core values – one that promotes the common good over private or commercial interests, individualism and market fundamentalism. Presenting a broad range of educational initiatives from around the world that reflect life-affirming regenerative and relational practices, Indigenous intellectual sovereignty, and principles of social and ecological justice, the authors contend that pathways toward transforming higher education already exist within and without the university. This task, say the authors, is urgent and necessary if universities and other institutions are to hold relevance in a rapidly changing global environment. This book makes a unique contribution to critiques of the modern, neoliberal university by looking for alternatives within and beyond traditional institutions of higher education. In doing so, the authors dismantle the longstanding 'ivory tower' image of the university, instead resituating education within broader social and ecological communities.
