Brokers of Modernity reveals how East Central Europe turned into one of the pre-eminent testing grounds of the new belief system of modernism. The book explores the complex, multi-directional connections of the "mobility/security nexus" in the re-ordering of states, empires, and markets in historical perspective. Contributing to a vivid academic debate, the book offers in-depth studies on how mobility and security interplay in the emergence of order beyond the modern state. While mobilities studies, migration studies and critical security studies have focused on particular aspects of this relationship, such as the construction of mobility as a political threat or the role of infrastructure and security, we still lack comprehensive conceptual frameworks to grasp the mobility/security nexus and its role in social, political, and economic orders. With authors drawn from sociology, International Relations, and various historical disciplines, this transdisciplinary volume historicizes the mobility-security nexus for the first time. Das lateinische Kaiserreich von Konstantinopel war eine der interessantesten Kreuzfahrerherrschaften. Unter maßgeblicher Mithilfe der mächtigen Seehandelsstadt Venedig wurde die alte Kaiserstadt Konstantinopel auf dem Vierten Kreuzzug erobert und geplündert. Zugleich entstand hier am Bosporus ein lateinisches Kaiserreich, das sich vergeblich bemühte, den alten Glanz des byzantinischen Reiches weiterzuführen. Der Band analysiert am Beispiel des lateinischen Kaiserreichs von Konstantinopel erstmals die Wechselwirkung zwischen Konzeptionen kaiserlicher Herrschaft und großräumigen Herrschaftsverbünden im östlichen Mittelmeerraum des 13. Jahrhunderts im synchronen und diachronen transkulturellen Vergleich. Kaiserlicher Herrschaft ist hinsichtlich Anspruch und Verantwortlichkeitsbereichen großräumige königliche Herrschaft. Möglicherweise ist die Kombination von höchsten theoretischen Ansprüchen und reellem Pragmatismus ihr zentrales Kennzeichen. Im Mittelpunkt der Analyse steht der Typus des mediterranen Kaisertums, der sich durch die Eigenschaft Multiplizität auszeichnet und durch die Notwendigkeit, sich intensiv mit anderen Kulturen und anderen monotheistischen Religionen auseinanderzusetzen. Um das komplizierte Wechselspiel von Handel, Religion und Politik bei der Genese und Ausgestaltung großraumüberspannender Herrschaft analysieren zu können, greift die vorliegende Arbeit auch auf die Denkfigur der imperialen Ordnung zurück. Der Vorteil dieses Forschungsdesigns liegt darin, die hochkomplexe Realität des Mittelmeerraums diachron und synchron besser als mit ‚Reichskonzeption‘ fassen zu können. Die Untersuchung des lateinischen Kaiserreiches zeigt, dass religiöse und kulturelle Differenzen im Bereich des ehemaligen byzantinischen Reiches als ausschlaggebend für den unterbliebenen Aufbau einer imperialen Ordnung angesehen werden können.

Statehood examines the extending lines of development of nation-state systems in Eastern Europe, in particular considering why certain tendencies in state development found a different expression in this region compared to other parts of the continent. This edited volume studies the logic of community formation and the common view of the past to show how various social bonds of communities functioned during the modern national era of East-Central Europe from the late eighteenth century until today and how multifaceted this group-building really was. Ottonian Imperial Art and Portraiture represents the first art historical consideration of the patronage of the Ottonian Emperors Otto III (983-1002) and Henry II (1002-1024). Author Eliza Garrison analyzes liturgical artworks created for both rulers with the larger goal of addressing the ways in which individual art objects and the collections to which they belonged were perceived as elements of a material historical narrative and as portraits. Since these objects and images had the capacity to stand in for the ruler in his physical absence, she argues, they also performed political functions that were bound to their ritualized use in the liturgy not only during the ruler's lifetime, but even after his death. Garrison investigates how treasury objects could relay officially sanctioned information in a manner that texts alone could not, offering the first full length exploration of this central phenomenon of the Ottonian era.
