Wenn Vergil Rom als ein "Reich ohne Grenzen" (Aen. 1, 279) bezeichnet, mag dies im übertragenen Sinn zutreffen, tatsächlich verfügte das Imperium jedoch über lange und tief gestaffelte Festlandgrenzen auf allen drei Kontinenten. Dabei kam der Orientgrenze besondere Bedeutung zu, da den Römern hier mit dem Reich der Parther eine ebenbürtige Gesellschaft entgegentrat. Allerdings stießen die beiden Großreiche nur selten unmittelbar aufeinander, da sich zwischen ihnen ein Saum von Kleinstaaten erstreckte. In diesem Grenzraum trafen nicht nur zwei große Reiche mit ihren jeweiligen Sprachen und Organisationsstrukturen, sondern auch Ackerbau und nomadische Weidewirtschaft, unterschiedliche religiöse Vorstellungen und verschiedene Rechtsauffassungen aufeinander. Der Band versammelt Beiträge der Jenaer Tagung "Imperia sine fine?", die eine Vielzahl unterschiedlicher Aspekte des Grenzraums zwischen Rom und Parthien als Konflikt- und Kontaktzone vom 1. bis zum 3. Venus oversees the physical movement that begins from Troy and ends in Italy; she thus secures the establishment of a new state in Italy, imperium sine fine. Venus is the ancestress of the line that stretches from Aeneas to Augustus, thus granting the princeps a divine and inherited responsibility to rule the Roman nation. With that said, Virgil by no means draws a perfect image of authority with Venus. The poet imagines her as irrational, fearsome, unfeeling, and destructive. She is scandalous with adultery. She is heedless of human suffering as she attends her imperial purpose. Such descriptions undermine Venus' authority and reveal the need for other participants (such as Juno and Jupiter) in the imperial regime. Those who read Venus as a source of Augustan sovereignty must also acknowledge the ways in which the Aeneid measures the shortcomings of the goddess and limits her authority.

This book examines the Lukan themes of unity and disunity against ancient Greco-Roman and Jewish social and political discourses on concord and discord to better understand the context in which Luke highlights the themes of unity and disunity.The themes of unity and disunity are particularly prominent in ancient discussions of the reigns of rulers, evaluations of laws/constitutions/forms of government, and descriptions of the contrasting effects of unity and disunity in the destruction and preservation of peoples and cities. These themes are grouped under the broad categories of kingship and law, and the preservation and destruction of cities. The book contends that, in the context of its literary setting, the theme of the unity of the church under one Lord in Acts contributes to Lukan Christological claims that Christ is the true king, and Lukan ecclesiological claims that the Christian community is the true people of God.
