Esta área médica ha avanzado significativamente en los últimos años debido al aporte que la tecnología ha proporcionado en términos de mejora de resolución en los sistemas empleados. Una de las técnicas que más ha avanzado en este ámbito ha sido la Tomografía por Emisión de Positrones (PET), basado en una técnica médica mediante la cual se obtienen imágenes de la distribución espacial y temporal de los procesos metabólicos que se generan en el interior del organismo.
