Excerpt from Truths of History: A Fair, Unbiased, Impartial, Unprejudiced and Conscientious Study of History The South is not given credit for the part she deserves in the making of the Nation. The text books that are now being used are most unjust to her; the reference books now in the libraries are most unjust to her; the omissions in history as now written are most unjust to her; the history as now written, if accepted, will consign her to infamy. The works covered include texts from ancient times to the present day and from different cultural traditions ensuring a wide variety of schools, methods and ideas are introduced. Each of the fifty texts represents at least one of six broad categories: early examples of historiography (e.g. Herodotus and Augustine) non-western works (e.g. Shaddad and Fukuzawa) ‘Critical’ historiography (e.g. Mabillon and Ranke) history of minorities, neglected groups or subjects (e.g. Said and Needham) broad sweeps of history (e.g. Mumford and Hofstadter) problematic or unconventional historiography (e.g. Foucault and White). Each of the key works is introduced in a short essay written in a lively and engaging style which provides the ideal preparation for reading the text itself. Excerpt from Causes and Effects in American History: The Story of the Origin and Development of the Nation Few things are drier or duller than the bare facts of his tory. Few things are more interesting than the reasons why great events happened as they did and why the con sequences of these happenings were what they were. Few things are more difficult than to prevent a multiplicity of details from crowding into an historical picture and from obscuring what is essential, significant, important. This narrative ignores details. It deals not so much with facts as with causes and effects - with the large cur rents of thought, feeling, and action which from generation to generation, especially through the economic and intel lectual influences of each period, have modified and shaped the destinies of the American people. The purpose of the book is thus to supply to the imagination a key to the real meaning of the evolutions, often complex and apparently confusing, of the historical pageant as it passes across the stage. Reinhart Koselleck (1923–2006) was one of most imposing and influential European intellectual historians in the twentieth century. Constantly probing and transgressing the boundaries of mainstream historical writing, he created numerous highly innovative approaches, absorbing influences from other academic disciplines as represented in the work of philosophers and political thinkers like Hans Georg Gadamer and Carl Schmitt and that of internationally renowned scholars such as Hayden White, Michel Foucault, and Quentin Skinner. An advocate of “grand theory,” Koselleck was an inspiration to many scholars and helped move the discipline into new directions (such as conceptual history, theories of historical times and memory) and across disciplinary and national boundaries. He thus achieved a degree of international fame that was unusual for a German historian after 1945. This book not only presents the life and work of a “great thinker” and European intellectual, it also contributes to our understanding of complex theoretical and methodological issues in the cultural sciences and to our knowledge of the history of political, historical, and cultural thought in Germany from the 1950s to the present.

Excerpt from Narrative and Critical History of America, Vol. 7 The debt of England in I 775 was one hundred and thirty-five million pounds sterling. But so admirably had the finances been managed that the rate of interest was but little above three per cent. The army and navy were inadequate to the protection of a dominion which in America embraced the larger part of a continent, and in Asia already extended over many populous nations. In 1774 the number of seamen was reduced to and of soldiers to Nor was it easy to raise troops. Eng land was already the great commercial and manufacturing country of the world. Her people were brave, and ready to endure necessary hardships, but they were in the main too comfortable in their homes to be eager to serve in the ranks for the scanty pay and scantier comforts of private soldiers.
