Excerpt from A History of the United States and Its People, From Their Earliest Records to the Present Time, Vol. 2 of 15 I felt sure that the general public would approve an avoidance of abysmal notes, overladen with trivial details, and told with such portentous long-windedness that only professional students, examinees, schoolmasters and their pupils really master them. Excerpt from The Patriotic History of the United States and Its People: From Their Earliest Records, to the Present Time; In Twelve Volumes The young people are supposed to learn History at School, and there the small, inaccurate, one-volume text-book at best is only a mere outline, a bare Skeleton of dry facts, about as inviting to the youthful imagination as the directory of a distant city. Dates and events are learned and recited till a requisite examination can be passed for promotion. But History learned in this way is a drudge, an irksome task for most pupils, and is largely forgotten almost as soon as the text - book is laid aside. A thorough knowledge of our History can be acquired only by developing a genuine interest in it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A History of the United States and Its People: For the Use of Schools The proper study of mankind is man, and the real importance of history lies in the light that it throws upon humanity. For this reason liberal attention has been here given to the domestic and social life of the people, their dress, their food, their modes of thought and feeling, and their ways of making a livelihood. The succession of events in minor wars would only weary the attention, but the modes of attack and defense and the character of the arms of the various belligerents are essential facts in the history of man in this New World. And the story of the progress of civilization, as marked by the introduction of new inventions and by changes in modes of living, is of primary importance in any history written in the modern spirit. This is from first to last a schoolbook. No other aim has been in view in its preparation than that of making the best possible teaching book of American history. The length and arrangement of the chapters, the questions, topical and geo graphical studies, and skeleton outlines, as well as the reviews, are all arranged with reference to the needs of teacher and pupil. An effort has here been made to apply to history in a thorough and practical way the great Pestalozzian principle of teaching through the eye. The suggestions for blackboard illustrations. Excerpt from A History of the American People The name America, which, by accident or mistake, was given to the Western World, fell, in the process of time, to the principal nation on the Continent, and for more than a century, the inhabitants of the United States have been known the world over as the American people. It is the history of this people that the present volume is interested with. The author desires to tell, in brief, how the country was first settled, what motives incited the adventurers who-left European civilization to plant colo nies on our Shores; how those colonies gradually learned that there was strength in union, and that it was to their credit before the world to be one nation; how the early fear that a Republican form of government was not adapted to a large country was dissipated, and how the whole land was gradually developed until its present position among the nations was reached. Excerpt from A History of the United States This textbook is based on the plan of study recommended for the seventh and eighth grades by the Committee of Eight of the American Historical Association. The work for the sixth grade has been given in a shorter book, entitled Introductory American History. About two-thirds of that book concern the beginnings in Great Britain and Europe of the civilization which the people of the United States share with other peoples of European race. The remainder contains descriptions of the discoveries and early settlements of America, principally in the sixteenth century. This volume for the upper grades opens with a chapter which repeats brie y the story of early discovery and settlement. The chapter may be used as a review in those schools which use the Introductory American History. Teachers who do not use that book will find in the chapter the essential facts of the period. American history is so rich and varied that the most serious ques tion which confronts the authors of a textbook is that of selection and emphasis. If space is to be found for adequate treat ment of the most characteristic features of our national develop ment, especially of those within the comprehension of the pupil of the seventh or eighth grade, certain phases of the political and military history of the country must be reserved for later study.
