The 22nd French Dragoons have a long and glorious history on the field of battle since 1630 to the Napoleonic battlefield of Austerlitz, Eylau, Jena it was called again to duty in the First World War, one of its members trooper Christian Mellet recorded his experiences in and out of the saddle. At the initial onrush of the French armies into Belgium to get to grips with the enemy Mallet and his regiment trotted out to war from Rheims in Northern France. The French forces in the Vosges and Alsace attacked en masse and were slaughtered whilst the cavalry that Mallet was a member fell back before stronger German forces. Fortunes swung back to the Allies side and as the Allies fought the battle of the Marne; Mallet, in the thick of it, remembers that he and his fellow troopers were exhausted and “covered with a layer of black dust adherent from sweat, looked like devils”. Mallet and his comrades then faced the war on foot as the chance to use mounted troops gave way to the advent of trenches; he fought on bravely until an attack at Loos where as Mallet recalls “we entered the zone of Hell.”. The Author by now a junior officer had the responsibility of leading his men, but suddenly felt “a brutal blow in the back with the butt-end of a rifle” but it was actually a vicious shell fragment that tore into his back. Mallet kept his men fighting for the time being until relief could arrive but was thereafter honourably discharged from the Army due to his wounds. Few memoirs of the French cavalry still exist and fewer still have been translated into English making this both rare and compelling. Mallet writes in an easy style which is filled with anecdotes on the march or out of the line and vivid vignettes of the fighting which appeared as a blur to him amidst the shot and shells.

A first-hand account of the twilight of the arme-blanche at war This book is particularly engaging for several reasons. It principally concerns the opening campaigns of the Great War in Europe, before the time of trenches and wire, at a time when the fighting was still mobile. Cavalry on both sides was not only being employed in much the same way as it had been during the Napoleonic era, but the cavalrymen were dressed--complete with Corinthian helmets and horse-tails--in a style which would have been recognised by their great-grandfathers a century earlier. This first-hand account by an ordinary French cavalry trooper of a dragoon regiment rewards the reader with an intimate and immediate view of the conflict and of life within a cavalry regiment of the period. This concise, but fascinating recollection concerns the authors experiences in the fighting at Compiegne, Staden, Ypres and Loos. This Leonaur book contains images and photographs which were not included in the original edition. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.

A SUNDAY TIMES BOOK OF THE YEAR A TELEGRAPH BOOK OF THE YEAR 'A tour de force of scholarship, analysis and narration . . . Lloyd is well on the way to writing a definitive history of the First World War' Lawrence James, The Times 'This well-researched, well-written and cogently argued new analysis . . . will undoubtedly now take its rightful place as the standard account of this vital theatre of the conflict' Andrew Roberts, author of Churchill: Walking with Destiny _________________ In the annals of military history, the Western Front stands as an enduring symbol of the folly and futility of war. However, as bestselling military historian Nick Lloyd reveals in this highly-praised history - the first of an epic trilogy -- the story is not one of pointlessness and stupidity, but rather a heroic triumph against the odds. With a cast of hundreds and a huge canvas of places and events, Lloyd tells the whole tale, revealing what happened in France and Belgium between August 1914 and November 1918 from the perspective of all the main combatants - including French, British, Belgian, US and, most importantly, German forces. Lloyd examines the most decisive campaigns of the Great War and explains the unprecedented innovation, adaptation and tactical development that have been too long obscured by legends of mud, blood and futility, drawing upon the latest scholarship on the war, wrongly overlooked first-person accounts, and archival material from every angle. Conveying the visceral assault of the battlefield with vivid detail, Lloyd ultimately redefines our understanding of a crucial theatre in this monumental tragedy. _________________ 'Excellent on detail . . . Lloyd's book will be cherished by military history buffs' Max Hastings, Sunday Times 'It is the best modern single-volume history of war on the Western Front and is likely to remain the standard account for some time' Jonathan Boff, The Spectator

the First World War, who was a passionate “Westerner” and advocate of the Anglo-French alliance. Major-General C. E. Callwell recounts the story of the outspoken, opinionated and well connected Field Marshal using extensive quotes from his diary, often dripping with acerbic wit, in the greatest of detail. “Field Marshal Sir Henry Wilson, an Irishman who in June 1922 was assassinated on his doorstep in London by Irish republicans, was one of the most controversial British soldiers of that age. Before 1914 he did much to secure the Anglo-French alliance and was responsible for the planning which saw the British Expeditionary Force successfully despatched to France after the outbreak of war with Germany. A passionate Irish unionist, he gained a reputation as an intensely ‘political’ soldier, especially during the ‘Curragh crisis’ of 1914 when some officers resigned their commissions rather than coerce Ulster unionists into a Home Rule Ireland. During the war he played a major role in Anglo-French liaison, and ended up as Chief of the Imperial General Staff, professional head of the army, a post he held until February 1922. After Wilson retired from the army, he became an MP and was chief security adviser to the new Northern Ireland government. As such, he became a target for nationalist Irish militants, being identified with the security policies of the Belfast regime, though wrongly with Protestant sectarian attacks on Catholics. He is remembered today in unionist Northern Ireland as a kind of founding martyr for the state. Wilson’s reputation was ruined in 1927 with the publication of an official biography, which quoted extensively and injudiciously from his entertaining, indiscreet, and wildly opinionated diaries, giving the impression that he was some sort of Machiavellian monster.”-Professor Keith Jeffrey.

The Marne 1914 written by Holger H. Herwig and has been published by Random House this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-12-01 with History categories.

For the first time in a generation, here is a bold new account of the Battle of the Marne, a cataclysmic encounter that prevented a quick German victory in World War I and changed the course of two wars and the world. With exclusive information based on newly unearthed documents, Holger H. Herwig re-creates the dramatic battle and reinterprets Germany’s aggressive “Schlieffen Plan” as a carefully crafted design to avoid a protracted war against superior coalitions. He paints a fresh portrait of the run-up to the Marne and puts in dazzling relief the Battle of the Marne itself: the French resolve to win, and the crucial lack of coordination between Germany’s First and Second Armies. Herwig also provides stunning cameos of all the important players, from Germany’s Chief of General Staff Helmuth von Moltke to his rival, France’s Joseph Joffre. Revelatory and riveting, this is the source on this seminal event.
