Do you want to be a better pilot? Do you want to improve your judgment and skills in training, tests, and throughout your career? Why do the best pilots consistently perform to a higher standard? It is the mental game and preparation that separate the good pilots from the high-performance pilots. Professional athletes have relied on sports psychology and coaching for years to help improve performance. Pilots too can benefit from mental strategies, but until now there has been scant aviation-specific content on how to prepare to fly. In Performance Pilot, noted performance coach, Ross Bentley, and professional aviator, Phil Wilkes, reveal aviation-specific procedures, techniques, and strategies to help you methodically, deliberately, and more effectively prepare for, conduct, and evaluate your flying and consistently perform at the highest level. For pilots just starting out, Performance Pilot can help you create a foundation to build upon and use throughout your flying career. The lessons and techniques are equally relevant to pilots at any experience level, whether recreational or professional, civil or military. In short, this book will make you a better pilot. REVIEWS FROM PILOTS "I''ve had the opportunity to fly large four-engine transport aircraft on all seven continents, from combat in Afghanistan to remote ice runways in Antarctica. Every flight demands the highest level of performance from the crew to ensure safe operations. As a military flight instructor, I have flown with pilots of all experience levels. It is amazing to see the difference between pilots that prepare and those that don''t. This book has techniques for all experience levels designed to help any pilot develop their skills and performance. For those just starting out, the techniques in this book can help create a foundation they can build upon and use throughout their flying career. In short, the strategies in this book can help build better pilots." Lt Col Brent Keenan, USAF, C-17A Instructor Pilot & Squadron Commander "This book is relevant to any recreational, professional or military pilot looking to enhance their own performance and skills. As a current instructor of F18 fighter pilots, this is certainly a book I will recommend to all my students." Squadron Leader M A Saunders, RAAF Fighter Combat Instructor "Plenty of books describe the technical aspects of flying airplanes, but the human performance psychology has largely been ignored. There is very little information for pilots on how to improve on high performance skills needed for high-stress and high-workload types of piloting. This book addresses that gap and gives pilots an understanding of the best and most efficient techniques on improving their aircraft handling in a way that will garner real results without needing to turn a propeller. I only wish I had this book years ago." Anthony Crichton-Browne, Airbus A320 Captain, competition aerobatic pilot & aviation podcaster "During my training as a military pilot, I utilized some of the strategies described in this book. However, my personal implementation was haphazard and lacked the methodical and deliberate implementation required to apply them in an effective manner. This book describes the structure needed to effectively apply these learning techniques as well as introducing many new and complementary ones I had not considered. I am sure that my aviation training and subsequent career would have benefitted greatly had this text been available at the time." Jaimie Tilbrook, Former RAAF C130 Hercules Captain "Reading and practicing the advice in ''Performance Pilot'' will help enhance your airmanship. I know that after any of my flying students or colleagues have read ''Performance Pilot'', I''ll sleep better in knowing that their flying careers will take them much more safely throughout their local skies and beyond." Andrew Musca-Unger, Grade 1 Flight Instructor & glider pilot

There is often a gap between theory and practical application which is never fully explained. In many cases, critical information is given to the student only once, with the expectation that it will be understood and applied when needed. The information may be fully absorbed and understood by newer pilots. However, applying theory correctly when it is suddenly needed in real life may not happen as intended, if at all.Worse still, if the instructor is not widely experienced themself, they may not even be aware of small but important pieces of information that need to be passed on to the student. You can't teach something that you don't properly understand yourself. There is also the alarming notion in some instructor circles that certain elements of proficient flying can be safely omitted for students who are not aiming for a career in the airlines. The flight training syllabus has been developed over many years and has recently been fine tuned in response to the release of the Manual Of Standards (MOS).To remain competitive, most flying schools only teach what is required to 'meet the standard'. Often this is not what a safe and competent pilot needs to know or what employers need their new pilots to be able to do.This book starts by examining some things you can do to take better care of your passengers, examines the use of checklists, then looks at a few critical skills that are often lacking in the typical low hour or non-professional pilot.

Fly toward pilot certification with these real-world scenario exercises Although PC-based flight simulations have been available for 30 years, many pilots, instructors, and flight schools don't understand how best to use these tools in real-world flight training and pilot proficiency programs. This invaluable reference bridges the gap between simulation tools and real-world situations by presenting hands-on, scenario-based exercises and training tips for the private pilot certificate and instrument rating. As the first of its kind based on FAA-Industry Training Standards (FITS), this book steers its focus on a scenario-based curriculum that emphasizes real-world situations. Experienced pilot and author Bruce Williams ultimately aims to engage the pilot, reinforce the "realistic" selling point of PC-based flight simulations, while also complementing the FAA-approved FITS syllabi. Serves as essential reading for pilots who want to make effective use of simulation in their training while expanding their skill level and enjoyment of flying Covers private pilot real-world scenarios and instrument rating scenarios Includes a guide to recommended websites and other resources Features helpful charts as well as a glossary You'll take off towards pilot certification with this invaluable book by your side.

Lessons From The Logbook written by Ron Fowler and has been published by Aviation Book Company this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-08 with Transportation categories.

Piloting techniques on diverse topics are in this collection of stories from an experienced flight instructor's logbook. Ron Fowler accurately states, "our skills of flight either improve or slowly erode, but they rarely remain unchanged." Speaking pilot to pilot, the author picks up where initial pilot training leaves off. Lessons from the Logbook is a collection of stories that began as articles written for Plane & Pilot magazine, and was previously published by Aviation Book Company. The book is organized to reflect all the phases of flight: preflight, departure, en route, and arrival, and concludes with a section on recurrent training. It provides piloting techniques on such diverse topics as night flying; what to do when you get stuck above or below a cloud deck; how to handle in-flight emergencies; evaluating real-life takeoff performance; pursuing a path to perfect flying; and much, much more. Ron Fowler is the ideal flight instructor--experienced, patient, and entertaining, with excellent communication skills. Although readers may never have an opportunity to fly with him, his gentle guidance will stick with them: first when they read the pages that share the author's expertise, to be recalled again when they have a similar experience. Lessons from the Logbook will inspire readers to improve their flying skills, and more importantly, motivate them to take to the sky.

The Artistry of the Great Flyer teaches stick and rudder skills all too often missed in pilot training. For those pilots who have grown fearful, bored, or uninspired by flying, Jim Alsip offers profound insight that will have you flying safer, better, and with more joy. Most pilots know of a good pilot who lost his life in a maneuvering accident. Alsip's book provides tools for avoiding tragedy—surprising skills that help pilots avoid the deadly “booby trap” turn. Good stick and rudder skills can save a plane and a life in a pinch, but they require training and practice. In an emergency, pilots fly like they train; sight picture is critical to that performance. Here, Alsip aptly quotes his mother: "Look where you are going, and watch what you are doing." While the lighthearted approach is appreciated, the sentiment is deadly serious. Alsip is a highly skilled master of flying. In The Artistry of the Great Flyer, readers will develop life-saving aerial dexterity to recover from upsets and spins, and gain the skills needed to increase flyer confidence and fun.
