Excerpt from Improvement Era, Vol. 25: June, 1922 The organization in the Church best fitted to stimulate a wholesome discontent is the Mutual Improvement Association. By its title it is dedicated to the task of arousing its members to a common betterment. This organization, if it is functioning, is helping men and women to understand how much more the gospel comprehends than a knowledge of the Ten Command ments, the Articles of Faith, and the Word of Wisdom. These are, of course, fundamental as guide posts in the way of life, but the way of life, not the guide posts, is the vital thing. There is, perhaps, nothing more disconcerting to the alert young Lat ter-day Saint, eager and confident in his quest for learning, than to find his mature brethren and sisters enjoying a kind of smug complacency in the belief that all that is important in the life of the soul is a knowledge of what the Lord has revealed. Noth ing could be further from the purposes of the Creator, and noth ing could be more fatal to effort than the idea that all the fine things of the mind and heart come as gifts. The gospel clearly enjo-ins us to strive after truth. If there is anything virtuous, lovely, of good report, or praiseworthy, we seek after these things. They do not come to us as divine gifts. They are the divine rewards of our striving. This means that we must some how catch that discontent which impels men and women to rise above themselves to the more excellent things that await them. It means that we must keep our minds open, observe carefully, and read studiously; it means that we must rise slowly but surely in appreciation to the levels of the best in the thought, the literature, the music and the art of the world. The unhappy Guinevere, reviewing in solitude the tragic errors of her life, cries out with a new understanding: What might I not have made of thy fair world, Had I but loved thy highest creature here? It was my duty to have loved the highest; It surely was my profit had I known; It would have been my pleasure had I seen. We needs must love the highest when we see it. Excerpt from Improvement Era, Vol. 25: January, 1922 In this connection, I desire to say to all the Latter-day Saints that we wish they would refrain from writing to laborers in the mission field suggesting that it is about time they were coming home. Where parents have had sons in the mission field for, say 15, 16 or 18 months, and feel, because of financial difficulties that it is impossible to keep' them longer, we advise that they state the circumstances to the bishop of their wards, who should then apply to the elders and seventies, and these should endeavor to raise the means to keep those young men in the field for at least two years or two years and a half. In most cases a young elder is just coming to himself and to a capacity and ability and power to preach the gospel with force and with the inspiration of God, when he has been in the mission field 18 months, and it is a great injustice to the boy who is growing spiritu ally - as he cannot grow in any other labor in all the world - that he should have to come home too soon. Those who are at home ought to realize this, and ought to feel a responsibility and a willingness and a desire to keep in the field the young men from the various wards until they have completed at least two years of service; and in many cases it would be a god-send to the young men, as well as to those who help if their mission were extended to two and a half or even three years. I remember President Lyman's idea was that a missionary who had been in the field two years and a half could do more by remaining another six months than he had done in the entire year of his previous term: and I believe this. Excerpt from Improvement Era, Vol. 25: July, 1922 When the exaggerated report of the wealth possessed by the Indians of the north reached Antonio de Mendoza, the Spanish Viceroy, at Mexico, the latter ordered an expedition sent to Cibola to spy out the land. Marcos de Niza, a Friar of the church, was placed in charge of the expedition, and Esteben, the negro, was sent as guide. Niza led his party north from Sonora to the San Pedro river, near the present town of Naco, Arizona, and followed down that stream to near its junction with the Gila. Here Esteben left the expedition and hurried on. He reached Cibola, supposed tobe the present Zuni, where he was killed by the Indians. Upon hear ing of his fate, Father Marcos, on the 9th of May, took possession of the San Pedro and surrounding country in the name of the King of Spain, and returned to Sonora. Excerpt from Improvement Era, Vol. 25: August, 1922 From among the various definitions of civilization - for there are many'good ones - I shall adopt, for the purpose of this discussion, the one which says that Civilization is the art of living together comfortably in large numbers. I shall not take the time to prove that this requires many kinds of behavior that are not necessary for those who live alone, or even in small groups. The only question is, how far are we able or willing to modify our behavior in such ways as will permit us to live together in large numbers? Savages are limited to small groups, not because of outward and physical conditions, but because of their inability, or unwillingness, to behave in such ways as would permit them to live in large groups. Civilized men manage to live together comfortably in large groups be cause they are willing and able to modify their behavior to suit the necessities of the case. The question, How much civilization can we stand? Becom'es, therefore, the question, How far are we able or willing so to modify our behavior? It goes without saying that the ability to procure the means of subsistence is a vital factor in the problem of living together in large numbers. This is not altogether a matter of technical knowledge of superior procesdes of production. There have been great civilizations with very little of what we now call technical knowledge. There has never been a great civilization without the willingness to give up the wild, free life of the plains or the woods and to accept the humdrum, routine life of settled agriculture and industry. Excerpt from Improvement Era, Vol. 25: May, 1922 Just what, then, does this quickening of the body mean, translated into terms of everyday living? Let us first try to sense in a general way the tremendous fact of our having been made temporal (or mortal). When we compare the freedom of movement in pre-existence, - as sug gested in our Savior's revelation to Nephi, that on the morrow he was to be born in Bethlehem some twelve thousand miles eastward - with what happens to our spirits the moment we are born, that is to say, the moment we become subject to tem poral conditions, we should realize without the need of scrip tural assurance, the fact that Adam fell, that we are all fallen. No fact could possibly be more emphatic than this. Let us next proceed to examine this fall in terms of the essential attributes of matter. Summed up we shall find that it means a kind of imprisonment; and that salvation means fighting our way outward and upward to freedom. The first condition of this imprisonment is due to Mass or Weight; in other words, to the fact that our spirits become sub ject to the law of gravitation, through being tied down to a body of mortal matter. At first the bondage is all but complete: as infants our limbs are as lead. Little by little the dynamic spirit ual being within gets control - fights its way out: we creep, we walk, we run, we climb, we change these leaden limbs to bundles of nerves, the livest stuff in mortal creation. Associated with every victory over the inertia of mass or weight, are scintilla tions of the radiant energy within, and these scintillations. Excerpt from Improvement Era, Vol. 25: April, 1922 John Antoine was a hunter, a trapper, a guide, adding to these strenuous occupations of his youth, that of gardener in his later years. The world beyond the woods meant little to him. He never saw a great city or conceived the intensive strug gle of men and women for wealth, place and power. Ambition was to him merely a word. Nevertheless, he was exceedingly wise in forest lore and the ways of the creatures of the wilder ness. There was a peculiar kinship between him and the birds. Crows talked to him as if he were an old but somewhat severe friend. He would touch a flower as tenderly as if it were a curl on a baby's head. He always marveled at the intricate lures Nature perfected for plant and flower fertilization and he would smile broadly when he had reasoned out the con formation of a pistil or a corona. At such a time he would look at me with super-intelligent eyes revealing the compre hended thought and I read into his expression the words, This Mother Nature of ours is a unique old soul. She loves to do such odd things. However, he seldom spoke, but I learned when in his company somewhat of the pleasure that may be derived from the contemplation of natural phenomena.
