Over the next thirty years, Alzheimers disease rates will increase alongside global aging. To handle the anticipated increase in demand, knowledgeable and skilled dementia caregivers are in need throughout the long-term care spectrum. Online training programs have emerged as a viable and convenient platform to educate both formal and informal caregivers. The first and second study systematically reviewed online dementia training programs and evaluated the CARES® Dementia Basics Training Program among formal and informal caregivers. The first study is a systematic review of online dementia-based training programs for both formal and informal caregivers conducted using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews (PRISMA) method. Methodological quality of the final sample (N=15) was assessed by the Cochrane Collaboration Back Review Group criteria. Results of the systematic review suggests that online interventions improve the condition and preparedness of caregivers, but future evaluations should consider study designs with multiple time points, control groups, and content that is personalized and interactive. In the second study, an evaluation of the online CARES® Dementia Basics Program among formal and informal caregivers was performed. The sample (N=233) included respondents from the states of OR, WA, CA and IL over three time points. Results indicate baseline differences in education, race, and caregiver type and a modest improvement in knowledge among both formal and informal caregivers. Recommendations are provided for future development and evaluation of online interventions.

Previous research indicates that nonpharmacological interventions are potentially successful in managing dementia-related behavior in long-term care facilities, provided staff have the proper training to deliver these programs. However, efforts to train direct care workers in optimal dementia care must overcome multiple barriers, such as the time and cost constraints in long-term care facilities and limitations in how direct care workers can receive such training. Online training programs may offer a solution, but many current online training programs deliver content in an unengaging format. Trainees might remember key information long enough to pass a follow-up knowledge test but are highly unlikely to retain valuable information that could permanently improve care practices. Recognizing the need for a more relevant, engaging training program that could actually improve care for persons with memory loss or dementia in long-term care facilities, the CARES® Dementia-Related Behavior program was designed. Using a novel approach that integrates narrated text with video footage of real, unscripted patients and direct care workers as well as insight from experts in the field of geriatrics, the CARES Dementia-Related Behavior program received excellent reviews from users and shows promise as a means of improving care interactions. This case describes the development of the CARES® Dementia-Related Behavior program; highlights key challenges addressed during the development process; describes the filming of real, unscripted patient interactions; and explores the methods used to evaluate the program in a pilot study.

Academic Paper from the year 2023 in the subject Nursing Science - Dementia, grade: A, , language: English, abstract: The aim of this systematic review is the evaluation of the effectiveness of the interventions regarding communication between both the carer as well as the patient suffering with dementia. Data was found through different search engines, mainly PubMed, MEDLINE, Scopus and Ovid. Research was done based on PRISMA guidelines. Almost 3,478 studies were extracted based on the titles and articles. While upon scrutiny only 9 fall under the desired data on effectiveness, efficacy and acceptability of communication intervention therapy among the dementia patients and their caregivers. In general, training treatments alter challenging behavior or carer load. Also, acceptance levels were high. More for family caretakers than those who are licensed carers. Even though many treatments weren't backed by an unambiguous conceptual framework, person-centered care remained among the most frequently mentioned paradigms. The study found that educational treatments improved carer understanding as well as interpersonal abilities. Successful strategies required engaged involvement from caretakers and were usually skill-based (which includes skill practice and conversation). Yet, improving the quality of life or mental health of caretakers and dementia patients may necessitate more specific treatments.

Designing And Delivering Dementia Services written by Hugo de Waal and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-05-03 with Medical categories.

Dementia is increasingly and widely recognised as a serious health and social challenge, in the developed world as well as in the developing world. The need therefore to design and implement dementia care services of high quality is becoming more and more vital, particularly given the likelihood of ever increasing demand in a world, which likely sees resources at best remaining at current levels. Designing and Delivering Dementia Services describes current developments in the design and configuration of dementia services. It offers an informative and detailed overview of what constitutes high quality care, considering the circumstances patients and carers may find themselves in. For dementia to get the priority it deserves, a number of factors are important and the book charts the invaluable contributions of various Alzheimer's Associations and Societies: this provides a focus on dementia strategies and plans at national levels: the book reports on the state of affairs regarding such strategies and provides a unique insight into the process of how one of these was developed and implemented. Recognising the need to prove that service developments lead to a higher quality of care, increased productivity and increased efficiency, the book links the resulting picture to service-based research methodologies, with an emphasis on the strengths and limitations of that research. Contributions from 17 countries on 4 continents give an overview of the state of affairs across the world, paying attention to successful - and less successful - initiatives to improve dementia care. The book furthermore provides pragmatic approaches to ensure planning becomes reality, highlights the need for structured workforce development, education and training and describes the opportunities afforded by assistive technology. This book is of prime informative and practical value given that pressures on dementia services are projected to mount across the world against a backdrop of limited resources and expertise. Designing and Delivering Dementia Services Defines the problems involved in meeting an increasing demand for dementia care services in a poorer world Maps initiatives and developments in the design and configuration of these services in a variety of international settings Analyses these developments against the background of political and health economic circumstances Provides a road map of where health services should go in response to this growing challenge. The first book to define, analyse and map initiatives for dementia care services in a time of increasing demand and decreasing resources, this book is essential reading for commissioners, senior clinicians and service planners in health and social care. It will also be of interest to academic researchers involved in qualitative services research as well as quantitative health economic research, health and social care managers and those involved in workforce planning and development.
