ÿFish?including finfish and shellfish?are an important item in the human food basket, contributing 17 percent of the global animal-based protein supply in 2010. They are an especially valuable food source in developing countries, where more than 75 percent of the world?s fish consumption occurs. In addition to protein, fish contain micronutrients and longchain omega-3 fatty acids that are essential for maternal and child health, but often deficient in the diets of the poor. However, the global supply of wild-caught fish has long peaked and is unlikely to rise again unless overexploited stocks are rehabilitated. As world fish consumption continues to grow, aquaculture (fish farming) has emerged to meet demand. Already, just under half of all fish that people consume come from aquaculture, which is one of the world?s fastest-growing animal food producing sectors. With the supply of wild-caught fish stagnant, any future increase in world fish consumption will need to be supplied by aquaculture. This working paper explores the potential role of aquaculture in meeting global fish demand in 2050, finding that aquaculture production will need to more than double by midcentury. The authors examine scenarios of aquaculture?s growth and environmental impacts in 2050 and close with a series of recommendations for how to sustainably grow aquaculture production.

The global human population will reach nine billion by 2050, and seafood is projected to be the primary food source to sustain such a large population. According to a recent World Bank report, aquaculture will be the prime source of seafood by 2030. Tilapia is one of the promising species for commercial aquaculture and one of the second most farmed fish worldwide. Given the issues raised by Antibiotic misuse in intensive aquaculture, such as the occurrence of resistant bacteria, it is necessary to develop environment-friendly strategies that could be used to improve production in a sustainable manner. Also, there is a need to establish the best aquaculture practice (BAP) approaches to avoid significant disruption to the ecosystem, the loss of biodiversity, and substantial pollution impact on the environment. The book covers the recent findings regarding sustainable tilapia farming through environment-friendly approaches. This book contains chapters that cover the current status of world tilapia farming and the concept of sustainability of tilapia culture (Chap. 1). Chap. 2 discusses the health management of tilapia with a particular focus on various diseases and treatments. ABSTRACTImproving the efficiency of production, profitability and nutrient utilization are the most important factors for aquaculture companies. Many research efforts have been focused to develop strategies that improve the productive performance of shrimp farms. One recognized strategy is polyculture, which can considerably improve farm production yields by optimizing use of available resources. Tilapia production in shrimp ponds (with and without shrimp) has increased rapidly in many countries including Thailand, the Philippines, Honduras, Mexico, Peru, and the inland desert of Arizona. A current practice in extensive, semi-intensive and intensive culture systems is the integration of tilapia with shrimp to increase total productivity. I tested this hypothesis in the present trials experimentally by co-cultivating tilapia and Pacific white shrimp in closed recirculating systems. The present series of experiments were carried out over a period of three years between 2007 and 2009. All of these studies were developed and conducted at the facilities of the Environmental Research Lab (ERL) of the University of Arizona in Tucson, AZ. A preliminary study included three treatments in low salinity water (5 ppt). White shrimp post larvae were stocked into cylindrical plastic pools and Red tilapias were stocked into aquaria. Equal numbers of shrimp were placed in all the treatments whereas fish (Red tilapia) density was variable. We found good growth and 100 % survival of shrimp and tilapia. The first experiment included five treatments with four replicates each with saline water of 10 ppt. Shrimp and Nile tilapia were weighed and distributed in 20 fiberglass tanks with capacity of 200 liters. There were evaluated finding statistically significant differences in growth of tilapia (P0.05) but no significant difference in growth of shrimp at different fish densities (P0.05)The second and third experiments included four treatments with four replicates each using the same shrimp density in each study but different fish density by treatment. Results of one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) for the second experiment showed a significant effect of the shrimp- tilapia polyculture on the growth of Pacific white shrimp (P0.05) but not for tilapia (P0.05) compared with monoculture. In the third experiment, there were significant differences in the growth of shrimp (P0.05) but not significant differences in the growth of fish (P0.05). These experiments were conducted using slightly different culture systems.

The world tilapia aquaculture production grew from 380 000 tonnes in 1990 to 6 million tonnes in 2018, making it the fourth-largest species group in global aquaculture. Tilapias are the second-largest species group in Mexico’s aquaculture with its 53 000 tonnes of production contributing to around 20 percent of the 247 000 tonnes of total aquaculture production in 2018. Mexico is the second-largest tilapia capture fisheries country, and its 116 000 tonnes of tilapia capture fisheries production in 2018 was primarily contributed by culture-based fisheries. Overall, Mexico is the second-largest international market for tilapia products, and the 228 000 tonnes live weight equivalent of its tilapia import in 2018 was higher than its domestic production. The average per capita apparent tilapia consumption in Mexico was 3.08 kg (21 percent of its total fish consumption) in 2018, which was much higher than the 0.9 kg world average. This document assesses tilapia farming and the value chain in Mexico by examining tilapia farming systems and practices, dissecting the tilapia value chain, evaluating the sector’s social and economic performance, discussing the impacts of proper governance and institutions on the sector development, and highlighting potentials, issues, constraints and challenges in the development of tilapia farming or aquaculture in general.
