Written by a diverse group of younger women religious from North America, In Our Own Words offers a collection of essays on issues central to apostolic religious life today. The thirteen authors represent different congregations, charisms, ministries, and histories. The topics and concerns that shape these chapters emerged naturally through a collaborative process of prayer and conversation. Essays focus on the vows and community life, individual identity and congregational charisms, and leadership among younger members leading into the future. The authors hope these chapters may form a springboard for further conversation on religious life, inviting others to share their experiences of religious life in today’s world.

The way we communicate has changed. Today, many of our interactions are digital, but until recently writing letters was the norm. Drawing from over 100 miles of records held at the UK's official government archive, The National Archives at Kew, this collection of letters, postcards and telegraphs will shine a spotlight on a range of significant historical moments and occurrences, recapturing a lost world in which correspondence was king. The book includes letters from: Queen Elizabeth I, Oscar Wilde, Charles Kray, 'Jack the Ripper', the Captain of the Titanic, Edward Smith, as well as the 'real Charlotte Gray' spy, Christine Granville, amongst others. Topics covered in the collection are both British and international, including: Anne Boleyn's adultery, the Gunpowder Plot, mad King George III's military campaign in the New World, Captain Cook being the first European to set foot in Australia, a soldier's view of life in the trenches, the experience of a special agent during World War II and Nelson Mandela's trial, amongst others. The book features approximately 60 letters, each with a 600 word essay, and a 3000 word introduction. There are around 120 images in the book: 60 of the letters themselves, and a further 60 supplementary images.

A collection of hundreds of thoughtful and inspiring quotations from “the folksy god of American capitalism” (Vanity Fair). For more than half a century, Warren Buffett, the chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, has been one of the world’s most respected businessmen, not just because of his savvy investments and unmatched record of returns, but also because of his humility, candor, and refreshing perspective on wealth. Despite this tremendous success, the Oracle of Omaha doesn’t feel entitled to the $89 billion net worth his abilities have earned him. Instead, he likes to say that he was born at the right place and time, and as an active philanthropist, he has already pledged to give most of his money to charity. This modesty in the face of proven talent is part of what makes Buffett as popular on Main Street as he is on Wall Street—he is one of the world’s wealthiest men and yet he is still personable and relatable. A comprehensive guidebook to the inner workings of this business icon, Warren Buffett: In His Own Words provides insight into his thoughts on investing, Wall Street, business, politics, taxes, life lessons, and more. This collection of quotations draws from decades of interviews, editorials, and annual shareholder reports, amassing a comprehensive outline of how Buffett believes a good business is run and a good life is led. It’s advice that Buffett has successfully adhered to throughout his 88 years, and it’s now available in Warren Buffett: In His Own Words.

This path-breaking volume reveals a little-known aspect of how Lashkar-e-Tayyaba, a jihadist terrorist group, functions in Pakistan and beyond by translating and commenting upon a range of publications produced and disseminated by Dar-ul-Andlus, the publishing wing of LeT. Only a fraction of LeT's cadres ever see battle: most of them are despatched on nation-wide 'proselytising' (dawa) missions to convert Pakistanis to their particular interpretation of Islam, in support of which LeT has developed a sophisticated propagandist literature. This canon of Islamist texts is the most popular and potent weapon in LeT's arsenal, and its scrutiny affords insights into how and who the group recruits; LeT's justification for jihad; its vision of itself in global and regional politics; the enemies LeT identifies and the allies it cultivates; and how and where it conducts its operations. Particular attention is paid to the role that LeT assigns to women by examining those writings which heap extravagant praise upon the mothers of aspirant jihadis, who bless their operations and martyrdom. It is only by understanding LeT's domestic functions as set out in these texts that one can begin to appreciate why Pakistan so fiercely supports it, despite mounting international pressure to disband the group.

"There is no easy way to walk to freedom anywhere, and many of us will have to pass through the valley of the shadow of death again and again before we reach the mountain tops of our desires." -Nelson Mandela, September 1953 In spreading the message of freedom, equality, and human dignity, Nelson Mandela helped transform not only his own nation, but the entire world. Now his most important speeches are collected in a single volume. From the eve of his imprisonment to his release twenty-seven years later, from his acceptance of the Nobel Peace Prize to his election as South Africa's first black president, these speeches span some of the most pivotal moments of Mandela's life and his country's history. Arranged thematically and accompanied by tributes from leading world figures, Mandela's addresses memorably illustrate his lasting commitment to freedom and reconciliation, democracy and development, culture and diversity, and international peace and well-being. The extraordinary power of this volume is in the moving words and intimate tone of Mandela himself, one of the most courageous and articulate men of our time.

Hundreds of biographies have been written of Martin Luther, John Calvin, John Knox and John Bunyan. But there is something unique to be gained by listening to these men tell their stories in their own words. Here, in In Their Own Words, is a collection of testimonial statements drawn from the writings of Luther, Calvin, Knox, and Bunyan. We see men who candidly confessed their sins and boldly testified to the grace, mercy, and goodness of God to them. Their testimonies illustrate the great truth stated by Paul that 'where sin abounded, grace abounded much more, so that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord' (Rom. 5:20-21).

For most Norwegians in the nineteenth century, America was a remote and exotic place until the first immigrants began to write home. Their letters were among the most valuable, accessible, and reliable sources of information about the new world and the journey to it. For many immigrants, writing letters home was their most cherished opportunity to communicate their thoughts and feelings in their native language. Through vivid translations of letters written to family and friends between 1870 and 1945, In Their Own Words traces the stories of nine Norwegian immigrants: farmer, fisherman, gold miner, politician, unmarried mother, housewife, businessman, railroad worker, contractor. Their common bond was the experience of immigration and acculturation, but their individual experiences were manifested in a wide variety of forms. Solveig Zempel has thoughtfully selected and translated letters rich in personal description and observation to present each writer’s subjective view of historical events. Often focusing on the minutiae of daily life and the feelings of the individual immigrant, the letters form a complex, intimate, and colorful mosaic of the immigrant world. Solveig Zempel is chair of the Norwegian Department at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota.
