Using language - speaking and understanding it - is a defining ability of human beings, woven into all human activity. It is therefore inevitable that it should be deeply implicated in the design, production and use of buildings. Building legislation, design guides, competition and other briefs, architectural criticism, teaching and scholarly material, and the media all produce their characteristic texts. The authors use texts about such projects as Berlin's new Reichstag, Scotland's new Parliament, and the Auschwitz concentration camp museum to clarify the interaction between texts, design, critical debate and response.

Paris, 1968: Nicholas finds himself broke, without papers, and on the verge of being deported back to England. Seeking to stay in France, he takes a three-month contract as an English tutor to the 17-year-old Imperial Highness Natalya. It is the perfect solution; free room and board, his wages saved, and a place to hide from police raids. All that is asked of Nicholas is to obey the lifestyle of the Victorian household and not to leave the house's grounds. It should have solved all his problems. The Spaces in Between details the experience of Nicholas as he finds himself an unwitting prisoner within an aristocratic household, apparently frozen in time, and surrounded by macabre and eccentric personalities who seem determined to drag him to the point of insanity. Much deeper runs a question every reader is left to ponder--if this tale is fact and not fiction, then what motivation could have driven his tormentors?

Three photographic essays offer a study of the neglected "nooks and crannies" between structures, from gates and fences to sidewalks, alleys, and parking lots. In his exploration of how spaces become places, geographer Ford invites readers to see anew the spaces they encounter every day and often take for granted. 52 halftones.

"Between Species/Between Spaces assembles text and images resulting from a pilot artistic research residency hosted by the Cape Cod Modern House Trust and the Cape Cod National Seashore in Cape Cod, MA. Artists in the book reflect on the geological forces that are reshaping the landscape and ecology of the Outer Cape which illuminate and to some degree mirror the broader global dynamic of instability, loss, and transition we are facing as a result of anthropogenic climate change. The book collects new artworks in a variety of media by ten contemporary artists whose work investigates the relationships between ecological crisis, communities, individual subjects, and the environment - the result of collaborations between visiting artists and researchers at the NPS field station in the National Seashore. An introductory essay by Peter McMahon, founding director of the Cape Cod Modern House Trust, reflects on the Cape as a site of groundbreaking collaborations between artists, architects, designers, and scientists in the middle of the 20th century, led by visionaries Serge Chermayeff, Bernard Rudofsky, Gyorgy Kepes, and Marcel Breuer. An epistolary essay by NPS cartographer Mark Adams, who is also a painter, meditates on the Outer Cape as a site of community with an uncertain future; Adams' own work has indicated that a predicted 4000 year timeframe for the Cape's dunes and sandy shores to erode entirely into the sea may in fact be accelerating under climate change. Contributions by Adams, along with artists Jean Barberis, Joshua Edwards, Marie Lorenz, Nancy Nowacek, Jeff Williams, Lynn Xu, and Marina Zurkow and artist/curators Kendra Sullivan and Dylan Gauthier, who organized the residency and culminating exhibition, present multimodal research into species extinction, terraforming, ecological restoration and regenerative practices, as a window onto the past, present, and future of this unstable place"--

The sliver of time between afternoon and evening; that tiny moment that joins sleep and wakefulness; those mundane minutes spent on our daily grooming when we think of nothing in particular - all these spaces between our bigger daily events hold untold importance. These places where our sub-conscience sleeps; where our secrets go to hide; where we disguise our fears; where things and people that simply "do not fit" end up - these are those in between spaces that deserve to be acknowledged, then explored. Perhaps you'll recognize some of these "in between spaces" as your own. Perhaps, you will learn more about yourself. Perhaps, like Frost, you may discover a newfound willingness to explore your own spaces in between.
