Esse livro mostra a trajetória heroica de um dos maiores nomes do Abolicionismo no Brasil, o advogado negro Luiz Gonzaga Pinto da Gama (1830 - 1882), filho de uma negra liberta da nação nagô chamada Luiza Mahin e de um senhor escravista arruinado. Devido a sua participação na Revolta dos Malês (1835), Luiza Mahin foi obrigada a fugir para o Rio de Janeiro e deixar seu filho aos cuidados de seu pai. Em 1840, o menino Luiz Gama foi vendido como escravo pelo próprio pai para pagar dívidas de jogo, seguindo para São Paulo e tornar-se um escravo. Em 1848 consegue sua alforria e alista-se na Guarda Nacional, mas não se adapta à disciplina militar. Autodidata, conquista a vaga de escrevente na Secretaria de Segurança Pública e iniciava seus estudos do Direito, mas seu ingresso na Faculdade de Direito foi recusado. Mesmo assim, tornou-se o mais brilhante advogado abolicionista de São Paulo, tendo libertado mais de 500 escravos. Luiz Gama publicou seu livro Primeiras Trovas de Getulino em 1859 e escrevia artigos abolicionistas nos jornais paulistas. Membro da Maçonaria, participava de campanhas pelo Abolicionismo. Ele participou da fundação do Partido Republicano Paulista (PRP) em 1873. Luiz Gama continuou lutando pela liberdade dos escravos, mas não viu o fim da escravidão, falecendo no dia 20 de Agosto de 1882. Seu cortejo fúnebre foi um dos acontecimentos mais marcantes da história de São Paulo, 5 mil pessoas acompanharam o enterro do louvável tribuno dos escravos e herói abolicionista.

Nesta obra em que faz uma primeira síntese de uma década de estudos do cordel, Paulo Teixeira Iumatti reflete de modo profundo e original sobre os usos do Marco como tópica e como gênero da cantoria e da literatura de folhetos brasileira entre 1870 e 1930. A escolha desse período-chave permite ao autor flagrar como as nefastas heranças do escravismo ganham forma naquele momento de grande transformação do país. A originalidade da obra se deve em grande medida à identificação do Marco como espaço privilegiado para se compreender as acirradas disputas pela memória na sociedade à época, sobretudo pelo fato de o Marco, por seu caráter monumentalizante, mobilizar conceitos estruturantes para a sociedade escravista, como domínio, território, propriedade e liberdade. Outra grande contribuição do trabalho é que ele tem como objeto central os Marcos e desafios de autores afrodescendentes praticamente desconhecidos, notadamente Severino Perigo e Joaquim Sem Fim, cujas obras sobreviveram em versões registradas por folcloristas como Leonardo Mota e Francisco das Chagas Batista. Em sua aguda reflexão Paulo Teixeira Iumatti não perde de vista em momento algum as tensões que atravessam as relações folclorista/informante, nem tampouco a multiplicidade de práticas de ordem objetiva e subjetiva ali envolvidas. "The Collection" is meant as an introduction to and summary of Curran's primary and secondary holdings on Brazil's "Literatura de Cordel" now at the Latin American Library of Tulane University. The book relates the story of how the "cordel" collection was put together including telling of its primary sources, the poets themselves and "cordel" stands or "barracas" in cities or towns that sold the broadsides from the mid - 1960s to 2013. Photos and short biographic entries of the poets, printers and publishers are a big part of the story. The lengthy second part of the book is comprised of the lists of the broadsides themselves (accordng to title by the author's choice, author following when known), xeroxed copies of historic titles, and Curran's library of secondary sources dealing with the collection. The author believes that this book has most everything a prospective researcher or "aficionado" needs to know about the Mark J. Curran Collection of "A Literatura de Cordel."

Este trabalho ultrapassa o seu título, pois nele confluem as Américas, incluindo o Caribe, os EUA, o Brasil, o Canadá e a África. Como é de esperar, Elio demonstra o seu conhecimento de Luiz Gama, Castro Alves, Cruz e Souza e de muitos poetas da negritude. Mas eu pessoalmente destacaria o trabalho primoroso que ele cumpriu ao resgatar a poesia das mulheres negras, de Esmeralda Ribeiro, Miriam Alves, Lourdes Teodoro e Tânia Lima, entre outras. Elio sabe se valer de um discurso técnico. No seu texto florescem as palavras da Tribo, o linguajar de Teoria Literária. As notas de rodapé também apresentam esse rigor. Mas não recua diante da neológica, por exemplo, usando "caldeia" [do verbo caldear, o ferro]. Agradam-me ainda mais os momentos estilísticos em que o poeta Elio Ferreira pede passagem ao crítico Elio Ferreira. O tom do livro é de uma pessoa engajada na sua enunciação. A voz do discurso revela um timbre pessoal que assume plenamente a sua negritude. Essa singularidade muitas vezes ganha a abrangência de um Nós coletivo. São todos os seus irmãos de "raça" que se exprimem por sua voz. Elio cita Franz Fanon, o famoso autor de Pele negra, máscaras brancas, um livro no estilo dele próprio. O estilo é direto, bate na cara pelo ritmo das frases curtas, ou cortadas pelas vírgulas nas enumerações. A metáfora do "Navio Negreiro" e outras metáforas aguardam o leitor em muitas outras páginas, como a metáfora do tambor e a figura de Palmares.

This book offers a critical reinterpretation of male violence, patriarchy, and machismo in rural Latin America. It focuses on the lives of lower-class men and women, known as sertanejo/as, in the hinterlands of the northeastern Brazilian province of Ceará between 1845 and 1889. Challenging the widely accepted depiction of sertanejos as conditioned to violence by nature, culture, and climate, Santos argues that their concern with maintaining an honorable manly reputation and the use of violence were historically contingent strategies employed to resolve conflicts over scant resources and to establish power over women and other men. She also traces a shift in the functioning of patriarchy that coincided with changes in the material fortunes of sertanejo families. As economic dislocation, environmental calamity, and family separation led to greater female autonomy and an erosion of patriarchal authority in the home, public—and often violent—enforcement of male power maintained patriarchal order in these communities.
