The author analyses the various conversations that occur between the characters in the Jonah narrative and the 'conversation' that occurs between the text and its readers. The study opens with an introduction to the field of conversation analysis, with a focus on one feature of conversation analysis-that a fundamental structure in the organization of language is adjacency pairs (for example, question/answer and invitation/refusal). Person notes how complex the adjacency pairs in the Jonah narrative are, and shows how they contribute to the narrative elements of plot, characterization, atmosphere and tone. He then refines reader-response theory (especially that of Wolfgang Iser) and provides a reader-response commentary on the book. The study ends with an analysis of the history of the interpretation of the book of Jonah, demonstrating how the structures of adjacency pairs in the narrative have been successfully and unsuccessfully interpreted.

In this volume of the Old Testament Library, Juliana Claassens delves into the theological questions posed by the book of Jonah in the context of a community making sense of their harrowing experiences of imperial domination. Attending to the historical and literary elements of the text, Claassens traces the narrative of Jonah as one that is steeped in the trauma inflicted by successive ancient empires and that urges its original and ongoing readers to grapple with the woundedness of the prophet and of the community that Jonah represents. Reading Jonah through the lens of trauma hermeneutics and in conversation with feminist, postcolonial, and queer interpreters, this commentary seeks to reveal new layers of theological meaning. In particular, these interpretive strategies aim to take seriously the continuing legacies of trauma, as readers across time have reflected on the book's theological purposes--and their consequences. Opening up how interpreters from various religious and sociocultural locations have engaged with this intriguing and confounding tale, this commentary refers at several points to Jonah's reception in literary and artistic works, featuring illustrations throughout. The Old Testament Library series provides fresh and authoritative treatments of important aspects of Old Testament study through commentaries and general surveys. The contributors are scholars of international standing. The editorial board consists of William P. Brown, William Marcellus McPheeters Professor of Old Testament, Columbia Theological Seminary; Brent A. Strawn, Professor of Old Testament and Professor of Law, Duke University; and C. L. Crouch, Professor of Hebrew Bible and Ancient Judaism, Radboud University.

And we need good questions to help us do that. This discussion guide has many questions that were thoughtfully crafted to help you discover God in your life through God's Word written in the book of Jonah. And as you share your genuine journey in Christ with others, you will be mutually encouraged to follow God, growing in Him together empowered by the Spirit. This guide includes...1. Introduction - what makes a small group Bible study great2. How to use this guide3. Questions that drive at the main points of each chapter4. Thought-provoking questions that help you discover God's work in your heart5. Powerful quotes from Rediscovering Jonah*This guide is for small group (or individual) study on the book of Jonah and specifically for Timothy Keller's book, Rediscovering Jonah: The Secret of God's Mercy. You will need a copy of the book and a Bible (or a Bible app).Rediscovering Jonah is one of the best books on the book of Jonah that helps readers discover the surprising treasures hidden in the text. The story of Jonah is thought to be well-known, but the actual message of the text is actually yet to be uncovered by most people! You'll be blessed by reading the book and embarking on a journey to God's mercy with others through this guide.Below is the description of Rediscovering Jonah from its Amazon page."Pastor and New York Times bestselling author Timothy Keller reveals the hidden depths within the book of Jonah--the most misunderstood parable in the Bible. The story of Jonah is one of the most well-known parables in the Bible. It is also the most misunderstood. Many people, even those who are nonreligious, are familiar with Jonah: A rebellious prophet who defies God and is swallowed by a whale. But there's much more to Jonah's story than most of us realize. In Rediscovering Jonah, pastor and New York Times bestselling author Timothy Keller reveals the hidden depths within the book of Jonah. Keller makes the case that Jonah was one of the worst prophets in the entire Bible. And yet there are unmistakably clear connections between Jonah, the prodigal son, and Jesus. Jesus in fact saw himself in Jonah. How could one of the most defiant and disobedient prophets in the Bible be compared to Jesus?Jonah's journey also doesn't end when he is freed from the belly of the fish. There is an entire second half to his story--but it is left unresolved within the text of the Bible. Why does the book of Jonah end on what is essentially a cliffhanger? In these pages, Timothy Keller provides an answer to the extraordinary conclusion of this biblical parable--and shares the powerful Christian message at the heart of Jonah's story."*At the author's request, this book is being distributed without Digital Rights Management (DRM) copy protection enabled.

Talk is essential to human social life. Through conversation we form friendships, share dreams and hopes, and develop a common outlook on the world around us. Talk with God can achieve the same thing. This book examines the conversational prayers in the Hebrew Bible, their structure and content, to understand how talk with God forms friendship, shares dreams and hopes, and develops a Divine-human outlook on the world. Conversation forces the petitioner to surrender control of the encounter and become susceptible to unscripted give and take with the Divine. Conversation with God is always a risk, but the rewards can be great. Through conversation Abraham and Moses became friends with God. The same can be true for us.

Where is the line between God’s mercy and judgment? In the latest volume of the New International Commentary on the Old Testament, James D. Nogalski offers a new translation of and commentary on several of the Minor Prophets—the Books of Joel, Obadiah, and Jonah—that grapple with this theme in radically different ways. This volume includes a robust introduction for each book, delineating its textual transmission, historical context, literary form, and major themes. The introduction also discusses the role of each book within the collection of the Twelve (Minor) Prophets. The commentaries proper explain the texts verse by verse, illuminating each book’s structure and canonical significance, yet always with an eye toward pastoral application. Academically rigorous and accessibly written, The Books of Joel, Obadiah, and Jonah is an invaluable resource for scholars, students, and pastors.
