An international and interdisciplinary perspective on the adoption and governance of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) in defence and military innovation by major and middle powers. Advancements in AI and ML pose pressing questions related to evolving conceptions of military power, compliance with international humanitarian law, peace promotion, strategic stability, arms control, future operational environments, and technology races. To navigate the breadth of this AI and international security agenda, the contributors to this book include experts on AI, technology governance, and defence innovation to assess military AI strategic perspectives from major and middle AI powers alike. These include views of how the United States, China, Japan, South Korea, the European Union, and Russia see AI/ML as a technology with the potential to reshape military affairs and power structures in the broader international system. This diverse set of views aims to help elucidate key similarities and differences between AI powers in the evolving strategic context. A valuable read for scholars of security studies, public policy, and STS studies with an interest in the impacts of AI and ML technologies.

Principles of International Criminal Law has become one of the most influential textbooks in the field of international criminal justice. It offers a systematic and comprehensive analysis of the foundations and general principles of substantive international criminal law, including thorough discussion of its core crimes. It provides a detailed understanding of the general principles, sources, and evolution of international criminal law, demonstrating how it has developed, and how its application has changed. After establishing the general principles, the book assesses the four key international crimes as defined by the statute of the International Criminal Court: genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and the crime of aggression. This new edition revises and updates work with developments in international criminal justice since 2009. It includes new material on the principle of culpability as one of the fundamental principles of international criminal law, the notion of terrorism as a crime under international law, the concept of direct participation in hostilities, the problem of so-called unlawful combatants, and the issue of targeted killings. The book retains its highly-acclaimed systematic approach and consistent methodology, making the book essential reading for both students and scholars of international criminal law, as well as for practitioners and judges working in the field.

In "Some Principles of Maritime Strategy," Julian Stafford Corbett delivers a seminal exploration of naval theory that profoundly shaped maritime policy in the early 20th century. Through a meticulous analysis of maritime warfare'Äîinterweaving historical case studies and theoretical frameworks'ÄîCorbett articulates key principles that govern naval operations. His writing, marked by clarity and precision, reflects an understanding of both the strategic imperatives of sea power and the intricate relationship between naval and land forces within a broader geopolitical context. By challenging prevailing doctrines, Corbett establishes a compelling case for a balanced approach to maritime strategy that emphasizes not only offensive capabilities but also the importance of defending maritime commerce and maintaining control over vital sea routes. Julian Stafford Corbett, a prominent British naval historian and strategist, drew from his extensive knowledge of maritime conflicts and history to craft this influential work. His experiences during a period of transforming naval capabilities, combined with a commitment to understanding the implications of sea power, motivated Corbett to elucidate the complexities of naval warfare. His background, steeped in both military and civilian perspectives, informed his pioneering thoughts on the interplay between strategy and operational realities. "Some Principles of Maritime Strategy" remains essential reading for military scholars, naval professionals, and historians alike. Corbett'Äôs insights resonate in contemporary discussions on maritime security and naval strategy, making this work not just a historical document but a vital reference for understanding modern naval operations. For anyone engaged in the study of military strategy or interested in the enduring significance of sea power, Corbett's analysis offers invaluable perspectives that are as relevant today as they were upon publication.

Principles Of German Criminal Law written by Michael Bohlander and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-12-18 with Law categories.
German criminal law doctrine, as one of the more influential ones over time and on a global scale, takes rather different approaches to many of the problems of substantive law from those of the common law family of countries like the UK, the US, Canada, New Zealand, Australia etc. It also differs markedly from the system which is most often used in Anglophone writing as a civil law comparison, the French law. German criminal law is a code-based model and has been for centuries. The influence of academic writing on its development has been far greater than in the judge-oriented common law models. The book will serve as a useful aid to debates about codification efforts in countries that are mostly based on a case law system, but who wish to re-structure their law in one or several criminal codes. The comparison will show that similar problems occur in all legal systems regardless of their provenance, and the attempts of individual systems at solving them, their successes and their failures, can provide a rich experience on which other countries can draw and on which they can build. The book provides an outline of the principles of German criminal law, mainly the so-called 'General Part' (eg actus reus, mens rea, defences, participation) and the core offence categories (homicide, offences against property, sexual offences). It sets out the principles, their development under the influence of academic writing and judicial decisions. The book is not meant as a textbook of German criminal law, but is a selection of interrelated in-depth essays on the central problems. Wherever it is apposite and feasible, comparison is offered to the approaches of English criminal law and the legal systems of other common and civil law countries in order to allow common lawyers to draw the pertinent parallels to their own jurisdictions.

For the time being, the political project of basing the European Union on a document entitled 'Constitution' has failed. The second, revised and enlarged edition of this volume retains its title nonetheless. Building on a scholarly rather than black-letter law account, it shows European constitutional law as it looks following the Treaty of Lisbon, with the EU's foundational treaties mandating the exercise of public authority, establishing a hierarchy of norms and legitimising legal acts, providing for citizenship, and granting fundamental rights. In this way the treaties shape the relations between legal orders, between public interest regulation and market economy, and between law and politics. The contributions demonstrate in detail how a constitutional approach furthers understanding of the core issues of EU law, how it offers theoretical and doctrinal insights, and how it adds critical perspective. From Reviews of the First Edition: "...should be mandatory reading for anyone who wants to get a holistic perspective of the academic debate on Europe's constitutional foundations...It is impossible to present the richness of thought contained in the 833 pages of the book in a short review." Common Market Law Review "an enduring scholarly work, which gives an English-speaking audience important, and overdue, access to the long-standing and forever-vigorous traditions of (European) constitutional law... unhesitatingly recommend[ed]." European Law Journal "...real scholarship in the profound sense of the word..." K Lenaerts, Professor of European Law, Leuven

While there are publications on specific legal fields, no recent book includes several core legal subjects presented in a general manner. Resulting from this need for an updated work on the general principles of law in Hong Kong for use by non-law students and nonlegal professionals, the first edition of this book was published in 2006. After three printings, the latest in 2010, a new edition became necessary to reflect accurately the changes in the law since the first publication. Intended as a practical general guide to the more common legal principles as they relate to Hong Kong -- contract, tort, employment, and property -- the second edition should assist the reader in understanding and anticipating legal issues that might arise in commercial or daily personal situations. Therefore the second edition of this book has been updated to reflect recent court decisions and revisions to Hong Kong ordinances and has been reorganized to render the book more user friendly.
