Gretchaninov started his musical studies rather late because his father, a businessman, had expected him to take over the family firm. Gretchaninov began his studies at the Moscow Conservatory in 1881, later moving to St. Petersburg where he studied composition and orchestration with Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov until 1893. It is not surprising that Rimsky's influence can be heard in Gretchaninov’s early works. The Missa Festiva was not written until 1937. This is the choral score of the work, with Latin text, and without notated accompaniment.

This is a completely revised edition of the second volume of the New Oxford History of Music. In the last three decades there has been intense interest in the music of the Middle Ages and great advances in research have been made in facts as well as interpretation. Drawing on the work of leading British and American scholars, this volume presents an informed, up-to-date picture of a broadspectrum of music from the fourth century AD to 1300. Beginning with Christian chant in the Mediterranean, it continues through Latin (`Gregorian') chant, liturgical drama, medieval song, instrumental music, and early polyphony down to the monumental organa composed at the cathedral of Notre Dame inParis in the twelfth century. Over 200 musical examples help to illustrate the discussion of 1,000 years of rich and complex musical development. Contributors: John Stevens, Milos Velimirovic, Kenneth Levy, Richard Crocker, Susan Rankin, Christopher Page, Sarah Fuller, and Janet Knapp.

Machaut S Mass written by Daniel Leech-Wilkinson and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1992-01 with Music categories.

Machaut's Messe de Notre Dame stands as an enduring monument of medieval musical art. As such it is one of the most widely studied and performed works of music written before 1600. The Mass itself, however, is surrounded by uncertainty; its date of composition is unknown, its purpose is unclear, and its construction yields much ambiguity. Daniel Leech-Wilkinson has now prepared a much-needed modern performing edition of this work, published by OUP's music department. This companion volume defines his editorial methods in the context of the minefield of controversies surrounding the principles of editing music of this period, and indeed of the many different interpretations of the compositional structure and function of the music. Relating the Mass to other works of the period, he provides the student and performer with an invaluable guide to its intricacies, while his approach will be welcomed by scholars as both controversial and stimulating.
