World War I marks a huge break in Central European Jewish history. Not only had the violent wartime events destroyed Jewish life and especially the living space of Eastern European Jews, but the impacts of war, the geopolitical change and a radicalization of anti-Semitism also led to a crisis of Jewish identity. Furthermore, during the process of national self-discovery and the establishing of new states the societal position of the Jews and their relationship to the state had to be redefined. These partially violent processes, which were always accompanied by anti-Semitism, evoked Jewish and Gentile debates, in which questions about Jewish loyalty to the old and/or new states as well as concepts of Jewish identity under the new political circumstances were negotiated. This volume collects articles dealing with these Jewish and gentile debates about military service and war memory in Central Europe.

The most passionate advocates of Italy's unification in the nineteenth century possessed an almost limitless faith in the benefits of civic association. They also shared a common concern: once Italian unification was achieved and various freedoms were established, would ordinary Italians naturally become responsible, progressive citizens – especially after centuries of foreign rule, regional division, and economic decline? Most unification advocates doubted that their fellow citizens could form a modern, progressive civil society on their own, or that a vibrant association life would develop from the ground up. Building a Civil Society is the first book-length English-language study of associational life in nineteenth-century Italy. Drawing on extensive research in published and unpublished documents – including associational records, newspapers, periodicals, government documents, guidebooks, exhibition catalogues, memoirs, and private letters – Steven C. Soper provides a complex account of Italian liberalism during Europe's age of association. His study also raises important questions about the role that associations play in emerging democracies.

To believe and to know, faith and science; only liberty can cordinate these two supreme ideas, destined to diverge, to meet, to contradict each other, ideas which on account of this very divergence, this contradiction and this agreement, underlie the organic evolution of progress and civilization. -from God in Freedom LUIGI LUZZATTI; ALFONSO ARBIB-COSTA (TRANSLATOR) (1841-1927) was a scholar of tremendous erudition and authority; an expert in economics, law, and politics; a champion of religious freedom in Italy-and a triumphant one: he was the nation's first Jewish prime minister, serving from 1910 to 1911. Just before that groundbreaking civil victory, though, in 1909, he achieved his other great success: the publication of his God in Freedom. Greatly expanded for its first English-language edition (of which this volume is a replica) God in Freedom is one of the most comprehensive and historically important discourses on religious liberty ever written. Luzzatti explores the battle for intellectual and philosophical independence from its pre-Christian proponents in the Far East to the movements in his day to keep civic life free of pious influence in the United Kingdom, Europe, and America. Saint Francis of Assisi and the Ku Klux Klan, the Buddha and Darwin...all are present here, and others; too, whose thoughts and actions have tested the boundaries between civic and religious life. This is a history of faith and freedom that is itself a cry for tolerance, openness, and careful separation of the secular and the sacred.

Algebraic Geometry Between Tradition And Future written by Gilberto Bini and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-05-05 with Mathematics categories.

An incredible season for algebraic geometry flourished in Italy between 1860, when Luigi Cremona was assigned the chair of Geometria Superiore in Bologna, and 1959, when Francesco Severi published the last volume of the treatise on algebraic systems over a surface and an algebraic variety. This century-long season has had a prominent influence on the evolution of complex algebraic geometry - both at the national and international levels - and still inspires modern research in the area. "Algebraic geometry in Italy between tradition and future" is a collection of contributions aiming at presenting some of these powerful ideas and their connection to contemporary and, if possible, future developments, such as Cremonian transformations, birational classification of high-dimensional varieties starting from Gino Fano, the life and works of Guido Castelnuovo, Francesco Severi's mathematical library, etc. The presentation is enriched by the viewpoint of various researchers of the history of mathematics, who describe the cultural milieu and tell about the bios of some of the most famous mathematicians of those times.
