Il libro ripercorre le varie tappe del pensiero semiotico come si è manifestato nell’antichità classica, focalizzando l’attenzione sia sulle pratiche indiziarie, sia sulle teorie del segno e del linguaggio: si va, così, dai segni della divinazione greca al linguaggio delle Sibille, dagli indizi e prove della storiografia ai sintomi descritti nella medicina greca, per arrivare alle teorie dei filosofi. Queste ultime si susseguono in un ordine cronologico tale da coprire in maniera organica il percorso semiotico della cultura classica: una sorta, quindi, di comprensiva storia dellasemiotica dell’antichità. Si inizia con la teoria linguistica del Cratilo di Platone, si prosegue con Aristotele e gli stoici, si arriva al De signis di Filodemo, che illustra il dibattito tra epicurei e stoici sull’inferenza semiotica, e in cui compare per la prima volta l’espressione “semeiosis” (semiosi), poi adottata da Charles Sanders Peirce proprio in seguito alla lettura di quel testo nel 1879-80. Si affronta quindi il tema del confronto tra il linguaggio degli animali e quello degli uomini, che ha attraversato la riflessione filosofico-linguistica dell’antichità e si è posto alla radice di una lunga tradizione che conduce, attraverso il Medioevo, fino a Cartesio, ai dibattiti settecenteschi e alle indagini attuali sulla mente degli animali. Il volume si conclude infine su alcune tematiche semiotiche generali, che legano il mondo antico a quello contemporaneo, come la relazione tra un modello equazionale del segno e un modello inferenziale.

The aim of this study is to present, as far as possible, a general description of the theory of the sign and signification in Augustine of Hippo (354-430 AD), with a view to its evaluation and implications for the study of semiotics. Accurate studies for subject, discipline, and significance have not yet given an organic and systematic vision of Augustine’s theory of the sign. The underlying aspiration is that such an endeavour will prove to be beneficial to the scholars of Augustine’s thought as well as to those with a keen interest in the history of semiotics. The study uses Augustine’s own accounts to investigate and interpret the philosophical problem of the sign. The focus lies on the first decade of Augustine’s literary production. The De dialectica, is taken as the terminus ad quo of the study, and the De doctrina christiana is the terminus ad quem. The selected texts show an explicit engagement with poignant discussion on the nature and structure of the sign, the variety of signs and their uses. Although Augustine’s intention never was to establish a theory of meaning as an independent field of study, he largely employed a theory of signs. Thus, Augustine’s approach to signs is intrinsically meaningful.

The concept of 'populism' is currently used by scholars, the media and political actors to refer to multiple and disparate manifestations and phenomena from across both the left and the right ends of the political spectrum. As a result, it defies neat definition, as scholarship on the topic has shown over the last 50 years. In this book, Sebastián Moreno Barreneche approaches populism from a semiotic perspective and argues that it constitutes a specific social discourse grounded on a distinctive narrative structure that is brought to life by political actors that are labelled 'populist'. Conceiving of populism as a mode of semiotic production that is based on a conception of the social space as divided into two groups, 'the People' and 'the Other', this book uses semiotic theory to make sense of this political phenomenon. Exploring how the categories of 'the People' and 'the Other' are discursively constructed by populist political actors through the use of semiotic resources, the ways in which meaning emerges through the oppositions between imagined collective actors is explained. This book deals with some Peripatetic philosophers of the Hellenistic age (such as Theophrastus of Eresus, Eudemus of Rhodes, Strato of Lampsacus, Clearchus of Soli, and Cratippus of Pergamum) who were direct and indirect pupils of Aristotle. The main focus of the book is Aristotle's school in the Hellenistic period, a subject not particularly explored by the scholars. Three main issues are addressed in the chapters of the book: the problem of knowledge, the question of time, and the doctrine of the soul. More specifically the topics addressed are: the problem of sense-perception and the method of multiple explanations in the field of meteorology in Aristotle, Theophrastus and Epicurus, the epistemology of Strato (by comparison with Speusippus’ one), the notion of time in Eudemus and Strato, the conception of sleep in Clearchus, the doctrine of divination in Cratippus. Finally, the Appendix examines the probable influence of the physics of Strato on the medicine of Asclepiades of Bithynia. These themes are investigated by comparing the positions of the Peripatetics with Aristotle's philosophy, but above all (and this is one of the novelties of the book) by contextualising the doctrines of the Peripatetics within the broader framework of Hellenistic philosophies (Old Academy, Epicureanism, and Stoicism).

The history of healthcare in the classical world suffers from notable neglect in one crucial area. While scholars have intensively studied both the rationalistic medicine that is conveyed in the canonical texts and also the ‘temple medicine’ of Asclepius and other gods, they have largely neglected to study popular medicine in a systematic fashion. This volume, which for the most part is the fruit of a conference held at Columbia University in 2014, aims to help correct this imbalance.
