A musician, musicologist, and self-defined “poet of research,” Amelia Rosselli (1930–96) was one of the most important poets to emerge from Europe in the aftermath of World War II. Following a childhood and adolescence spent in exile from Fascist Italy between France, England, and the United States, Rosselli was driven to express the hopes and devastations of the postwar epoch through her demanding and defamiliarizing lines. Rosselli’s trilingual body of work synthesizes a hybrid literary heritage stretching from Dante and the troubadours through Ezra Pound and John Berryman, in which playful inventions across Italian, English, and French coexist with unadorned social critique. Dicembre 1798, dintorni di Taranto. Mentre ribollono i moti giacobini, viene ritrovato il corpo senza testa della vecchia Narda Stumicusa, mammana e fattucchiera della zona. Al delitto fanno seguito misteriosi avvistamenti di una bestia demoniaca – ululati raggelanti nel cuore della notte, feroci aggressioni ad animali – e, un anno più tardi, un omicidio simile: la carcassa mutilata di un viandante viene scoperta nel fitto della vegetazione. Con il secondo omicidio nella comunità corrono incalzanti le voci di una fiera pericolosa e gli abitanti iniziano a barricarsi in casa, finché da Napoli una pattuglia di dragoni del re – a cui si unisce il naturalista James Fenimonte – viene inviata in terra d’Otranto per indagare. Fra la gente del popolo, qualcuno afferma di aver visto la bestia, una sorta di grosso lupo, qualcun altro invece dice che i fatti di sangue sono da ascrivere al brigante Malesano. In una Puglia ancora stordita dai fumi della Rivoluzione napoletana, divisa fra sostenitori repubblichini e conservatori realisti, il gruppo inizia a indagare e nei sotterranei della chiesa rinviene ed esamina il corpo di Narda, semimummificato sotto uno strato di calce. Quindi, rintraccia i due fratelli che hanno scoperto il secondo cadavere, le cui spoglie sono state immediatamente bruciate sul posto. L’indagine si rivela molto presto la scoperta di un mondo in cui violenza, abissali differenze sociali e superstizione convivono con razionalità e rigore. Attraverso gli occhi dei soldati forestieri giunti dalla capitale, Omar Di Monopoli svela la straordinarietà di un territorio irrisolto, sfaccettato e diseguale, in virtù di un mirabile romanzo storico, dove si alternano e sovrappongono al gotico i registri del tragico e del comico.
