“War in the air over the Middle East Mesopotamia, ‘the land of the two rivers’, is deemed the birthplace of civilisation. Now modern day Iraq, it has known warfare throughout the millennia that man has inhabited it. By the first years of the twentieth century the Ottoman Turkish Empire had claimed Mesopotamia as their own and its alliance with Germany during the Great War brought battle to it once more. For the first time conflict came to its skies in the form of the newly formed air forces of the opposing armies. This book concerns the experiences of an officer of the R. F. C fighting a war far different from his comrades on the Western Front but one which was just as deadly. This is an usual account of early war in the air from one of the great conflicts sideshow theatres.”—Leonaur Print Edition Author — Group Captain John Edward Tennant D.S.O. M.C. d. 1941 Text taken, whole and complete, from the edition published in London, C. Palmer, 1920. Original Page Count – x and 289 pages. Illustrations — 38 illustrations.

Mesopotamia - today s Iraq - is aptly summed by by the author of this vivid memoir as a land of sand, sun and sorrow - a description that would doubtless be recognised by British servicemen serving there today. The author was an RFC officer whose secondment to the MIddle East in 1916, he admits, came as a relief after the squalor of the Somme. His account of his and his comrades operations flying against Turkish and German aviators in Mespopotamia and Iran is dramatic and hugely informative. The narrative describes combined operations with the army, and naval units operating along the twin Tigris and Euphrates rivers. Among many other adventures, the author survived being shot down in his DH4 aircraft. His narrative, accompanied by a particularly fine range of some 40 photographs, including remarkable aerial shots, will fascinate anyone interested in aviation history, particularly in the lesser-known theatres of the Great War.

"...a land of sand, sun and sorrow..." In March 1917 Baghdad fell to the British Army. John Edward Tennant arrived in Mesopotamia (modern day Iraq) in 1916 as a pilot in the Royal Flying Corp, having previously flown on the Western Front. His dramatic accounts of flying against Turkish and German airmen provide a fantastic insight into the early days of aviation combat: including the day he was shot down and captured by the Turks. He explains the difficulties found in the Mesopotamian conditions, the unforgiving heat and landscape. Tennant also recounts the combined operations of the British Army and Royal Navy along the Tigris and Euphrates rivers that finally led to the fall of Baghdad. Mentioned in dispatches five times, and awarded the Military Cross, Tennant's First World War was certainly an interesting one. There are lessons to be found in considering the Mesopotamia of 1916 and modern day Iraq. Full of bravery and sacrifice, In the Clouds Above Bagdad is an important and engaging piece of history. Praise for In the Clouds Above Baghdad "Remarkable account of a little-known campaign" - Naval & Military Press "Colonel Tennant has written a spirited account of his experiences with the Air Force in Mesopotamia" - The Spectator Lt-Col. "It seems a long time since we fought for very existence, so long that to perpetuate my recollections of the campaign in Mesopotamia I have woven these few records together for my own interest; it is neither Military Work nor Literary Aspiration, but perhaps will bring back memories of stirring times to those who served with me." This book is part of the World War One Centenary series; creating, collating and reprinting new and old works of poetry, fiction, autobiography and analysis. The series forms a commemorative tribute to mark the passing of one of the world's bloodiest wars, offering new perspectives on this tragic yet fascinating period of human history. Each publication also includes brand new introductory essays and a timeline to help the reader place the work in its historical context.

World War I In Mesopotamia written by Nadia Atia and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-01-12 with History categories.

The Mesopotamian campaign during World War I was a critical moment in Britain's position in the Middle East. With British and British Indian troops fighting in places which have become well-known in the wake of the 2003 invasion of Iraq, such as Basra, the campaign led to the establishment of the British Mandate in Iraq in 1921. Nadia Atia believes that in order to fully understand Britain's policies in creating the nascent state of Iraq, we must first look at how the war shaped Britons' conceptions of the region. Atia does this through a cultural and military history of the changing British perceptions of Mesopotamia since the period before World War I when it was under Ottoman rule. Drawing on a wide variety of historical and literary sources, including the writing of key figures such as Gertrude Bell, Mark Sykes and Arnold Wilson, but focusing mainly on the views and experiences of ordinary men and women whose stories and experiences of the war have less frequently been told, Atia examines the cultural and social legacy of World War I in the Middle East and how this affected British attempts to exert influence in the region.
