“In the Guardianship of God” is a 1903 collection of short stories by Flora Annie Steel. Flora Annie Steel (1847 – 1929) was an English writer who notably lived in British India for 22 years and is best remembered for her books set or related to the sub-continent. Like most of her work, these tales are set in colonial India and offer a unique insight into what life was like at that time. The stories include: “In the Guardianship of God”, “A Bad-character Suit”, “Fire and Ice”, “The Shâhbâsh Wallah”, “The Most Nailing Bad Shot in Creation”, “The Reformer's Wife”, “The Squaring of the Gods”, “The Keeper of the Pass”, etc. Other notable works by this author include: “Tales of the Punjab” (1894), “The Flower of Forgiveness” (1894), and “The Potter's Thumb” (1894). Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. It is with this in mind that we are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with the original text and artwork.

Does God care? Is He still watching over us? Is He still in the business of healing? Can He warn us and lead us away from danger? Definitely. Within the pages of this book you will read of real life accounts that tell of God's immeasurable love and generous care. There was the time when our home (and a woman's apartment that I had prayed over) was kept still while the rest of the region (eastern Ontario/western Quebec) experienced an earthquake. You'll also read about a message sent by God telling of a friend's healing from a terminal illness. There are also stories of God's protection and guidance (and what happens when we obey and what happens when we don't), as well as other times when God intervened in my life and that of my family's. While reading this book may you be reminded that our Heavenly Father wants to take care of us, that He is still communicating with His children and that we do indeed have God's full attention.

Flora Annie Steel was a writer who lived in British India for 22 years. She was noted especially for books set in the Indian sub-continent or connected with it. Flora was interested in relating to all classes of Indian society. The birth of her daughter gave her a chance to interact with local women and learn their language. She encouraged the production of local handicrafts and collected folk-tales, a collection of which she published in 1894. In 1889 the family moved back to Britain, and she continued her writing there. Some of her best work, according to the 1911 Encyclopædia Britannica, is contained in two collections of her short stories, From the Five Rivers and Tales of the Punjab. She also wrote a popular history of India. John F. Riddick describes Steel's The Hosts of the Lord as one of the "three significant works" produced by Anglo-Indian writers on Indian missionaries, along with The Old Missionary (1895) by William Wilson Hunter and Idolatry (1909) by Alice Perrin.

Excerpt from In the Guardianship of God Shurruf Deen, the overseer, was looking intently at the paper In his hand, and the rich brown of/ his complacent face seemed to have faded a little. Nothing, Huzoor, he replied glibly enough, though a quick Observer might have seen the muscles of his brown throat labouring over the syllables. The list is badly written, in the broken character. Thou shouldst speak to the clerk in thine office, Inspectory'ee; this name is almost illegible. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Living With A Wild God written by Barbara Ehrenreich and has been published by Twelve this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-04-08 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

From the New York Times bestselling author of Nickel and Dimed comes a brave, frank, and exquisitely written memoir that will change the way you see the world. Barbara Ehrenreich is one of the most important thinkers of our time. Educated as a scientist, she is an author, journalist, activist, and advocate for social justice. In LIVING WITH A WILD GOD, she recounts her quest-beginning in childhood-to find "the Truth" about the universe and everything else: What's really going on? Why are we here? In middle age, she rediscovered the journal she had kept during her tumultuous adolescence, which records an event so strange, so cataclysmic, that she had never, in all the intervening years, written or spoken about it to anyone. It was the kind of event that people call a "mystical experience"-and, to a steadfast atheist and rationalist, nothing less than shattering. In LIVING WITH A WILD GOD, Ehrenreich reconstructs her childhood mission, bringing an older woman's wry and erudite perspective to a young girl's impassioned obsession with the questions that, at one point or another, torment us all. The result is both deeply personal and cosmically sweeping-a searing memoir and a profound reflection on science, religion, and the human condition. With her signature combination of intellectual rigor and uninhibited imagination, Ehrenreich offers a true literary achievement-a work that has the power not only to entertain but amaze.

NAMED A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR BY ESQUIRE, THE IRISH TIMES AND THE TIMES LITERARY SUPPLEMENT A provocative history of men who were worshipped as gods that illuminates the connection between power and religion and the role of divinity in a secular age Ever since 1492, when Christopher Columbus made landfall in the New World and was hailed as a heavenly being, the accidental god has haunted the modern age. From Haile Selassie, acclaimed as the Living God in Jamaica, to Britain’s Prince Philip, who became the unlikely center of a new religion on a South Pacific island, men made divine—always men—have appeared on every continent. And because these deifications always emerge at moments of turbulence—civil wars, imperial conquest, revolutions—they have much to teach us. In a revelatory history spanning five centuries, a cast of surprising deities helps to shed light on the thorny questions of how our modern concept of “religion” was invented; why religion and politics are perpetually entangled in our supposedly secular age; and how the power to call someone divine has been used and abused by both oppressors and the oppressed. From nationalist uprisings in India to Nigerien spirit possession cults, Anna Della Subin explores how deification has been a means of defiance for colonized peoples. Conversely, we see how Columbus, Cortés, and other white explorers amplified stories of their godhood to justify their dominion over native peoples, setting into motion the currents of racism and exclusion that have plagued the New World ever since they touched its shores. At once deeply learned and delightfully antic, Accidental Gods offers an unusual keyhole through which to observe the creation of our modern world. It is that rare thing: a lyrical, entertaining work of ideas, one that marks the debut of a remarkable literary career.

Initially setting out to disprove God's existence, a scientist stumbles upon mysterious Biblical codes and patterns that point to God's fingerprint. Through his personal testimony, he proves that these incredible discoveries reveal undeniable, reproducible, objective evidence that God Exists. 52 embedded associations connect Samson to Jesus, in the same order, in just 96 verses in the Book of Judges. The probability of this happening by chance, is smaller than finding a single atom on Planet Earth by chance! Yet numerous other code sequences are also embedded in the lives of a Great Cloud of Witnesses including Joseph, Samson, David, Jonah, Elisha, Moses, and Joshua in the same order as those in the life of Christ. How could numerous independent authors have known about the steps of Christ in such detail, hundreds to over a thousand years in advance? The Author behind these accounts somehow can see events in the distant future. How can this be? Could He be the Omniscient One called God?
