The investigation of Primitive Baptist Universalists -- Calvinist 'No-Hellers, ' which sounds for all the world like an oxymoron -- requires the exact type of seasoned and comprehensive field experience which Dorgan has brought to it with meticulous care and insight. -- Deborah Vansau McCauley, author of Appalachian Mountain ReligionAmong the many forms of religious practice found in the ridges and hollows of Central Appalachia, one of the most intriguing -- and least understood -- is that of the Primitive Baptist Universalists (PBUs). Popularly known as the No-Hellers, this small Baptist sub-denomination rejects the notion of an angry God bent on punishment and retribution and instead embraces the concept of a happy God who consigns no one to eternal damnation. This book is the first in-depth study of the PBUs and their beliefs. As Howard Dorgan points out, the designation No-Heller is something of a misnomer. Primitive Baptist Universalists, he notes, believe in hell -- but they see it as something that exists in this life, in the temporal world, rather than in an afterlife. For a PBU, sinfulness is the given state of natural man, and hell a reality of earthly life -- the absence-from-God's-blessing torment that sin generates. PBUs further believe that, at the moment of Resurrection, all temporal existence will end as all human-kind joins in a wholly egalitarian heaven, the culmination of Christ's universal atonement. In researching this book, Dorgan spent considerable time with PBU congregations, interviewing their members and observing their emotionally charged and joyous worship services. He deftly combines lucid descriptions of PBU beliefs with richly texturedvignettes portraying the people and how they live their faith on a daily basis. He also explores a fascinating possibility concerning PBU origins: that a strain of early- nineteenth-century American Universalism reached the mountains of Appalachia and there fused with Primitive Baptist theology to form this subdenomination, which barely exists outside a handful of counties in Tennessee, Virginia, Kentucky, and West Virginia.Like Dorgan's earlier books, In the Hands of a Happy God offers an insightful blend of ethnography, history, and theological analysis that will appeal to both Appalachian scholars and all students of American religion.

Excerpts from the book...... The way you see God has filtered down to you through 2000 years of bible teaching and many other sources. Your concept of God is influenced by your culture and the congregation you grew up in. Your concept is also influenced by the way your parents talked to you about God. If your parents used God to threaten and manipulate you, then you are likely uncomfortable thinking about God. You might imagine Him as a big scary bully that you should avoid. ... ... John tells us something mystical and deep about God. John doesn't merely tell us that God loves us, but that God IS LOVE. His very essence is love. Unfortunately, some people see God as stern and austere. He doesn't laugh. He is not very happy. He never has any fun and rarely, if ever, smiles. He mostly sits in heaven growling, somber, keeping a critical eye on each of us. He always has His ink pen in hand ready to write down any mistake we might make. ... ... Read the lyrics of the first verse of My God and I and notice how you feel. Do the lyrics ring totally true, or a little awkward, or completely awkward? My God and I go in the fields togetherWe walk and talk as good friends should and doWe clasp our hands, our voices ring with laughterMy God and I go thru the meadow's hueWe claps our hands, our voices right with laughter, My God and I walk thru the meadow's hueI hope the lyrics were in complete harmony with your heart. I hope you are one of those people that see God as a loving, nurturing, and caring fathers. I believe that when we see God as happy, loving, and nurturing, then new possibilities and joys open for us. But, if you felt some degree of awkwardness, then read on and discover what the Bible reveals about your Father. ... ... The Old Testament represents God's joy in a way that embarrasses some people. Isaiah depicts God's joy as a bridegroom rejoicing over his bride. In modern language, that's honeymoon language. I will not paint the details for you. Simply remember the joy, happiness, and excitement of your wedding day; and that's a biblical picture of God's love for you. Wow! Let that soak in a minute. ... ... The imagery of the bride in these verses is not one of businesslike formality, but of joyful oneness and intimacy. The husband and bride become one. The very personal and intimate things that you and I understand about marriage are just the tip of the iceberg. ... ... You and I are merely little children compared to eternal God. Yes, I know that you are all grown up with serious responsibilities and obligations. Compared to other humans, you are an adult, but compared to the eternal God you and I are little more than youngsters at play. As long as we play fair, we can run to Him without fear, hop up on His knee, feel His hair, tug at His beard, and experience eternal love that defies description. ... ... I'm sure that some people will feel that I'm being irreverent in saying that God threw a party with the angels, but that is very close to what Jesus said, except the parties in heaven are much better than any party we can have here on earth. No one can throw a party like God can throw a party.

Is it possible to face the darkest days of life with hope and joy and purpose? The life of Colleen Chao was bright and beautiful—it was brimming with hope and possibility. She was a talented, confident, and ambitious young woman. So, Colleen never imagined that she’d swim through two decades of deep-water anxiety and depression. She didn’t guess that she’d marry late, suffer years of chronic pain and illness, and give birth to a child with health complications. And never in her life did she imagine hearing the words: “Cancer. Stage four. Terminal.” In the Hands of a Fiercely Tender God is born of the suffering that on its own could have crushed Colleen. Her pain, instead, opened her eyes to eternal realities and has wrought a soul of indestructible joy. How do we suffer long and well? What do we do when we feel cheated? How do we face pressing darkness? One thing Colleen has learned is that we cannot bear the suffering alone. We need lots of help. To that end, Colleen shares a precious devotional gift with the suffering soul: thirty-one days of wisdom, hope, and encouragement. Drawing upon stories from past saints, rich truths from Scripture, and habits that build joyful endurance, Colleen helps fellow sufferers to embrace one day at a time, to trust and love Jesus more, and put themselves In the Hands of a Fiercely Tender God.

Could it be that the angry, moral monster who masquerades as the Abba of Jesus is just a projection of human angst and fear onto a God who is passionately and eternally in love with the human race? Could it be that He has never been anything but on our side and working for our betterment? Is it possible that He did not need to be convinced, through bloody sacrifice or otherwise, that we were worthy of His attention and fellowship? Is it possible that our sins never truly separated us from Him, but simply caused us to run and separate ourselves from the One Who was only ever running towards us in compassion and love? Could it be that God has far better things to say to humanity then "turn or burn"? Could it be that He is not a God Who includes some while excluding others? Could it be that He loves all equally, and that He does not divide the human race up into categories of "us" and "them"? Could it be that God actually looks like...Jesus? In Saints in the Arms of a Happy God Jeff Turner contends for all of this and more. For years we've been conditioned to see ourselves as mere sinners in the hands of an angry God, but the truth; the astounding, breathtaking and beautiful truth, is that we are Saints in the Arms of a Happy God! From the atonement, to hell, to the wrath of God, no doctrinal stone is left unturned as the true nature of God, as shown through the person of Jesus Christ, is explored and mined for all of its riches. So buckle up, check your religious preconceptions at the door, and get ready for a thrilling journey into the heart of a God who is defined, not by His hatred for sin or by an affinity for retributive justice, but by a Love that is far deeper than we've dared to dream.

Sinners In The Hands Of A Loving God written by Brian Zahnd and has been published by WaterBrook this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-08-15 with Religion categories.

Pastor Brian Zahnd began "to question the theology of a wrathful God who delights in punishing sinners, and has started to explore the real nature of Jesus and His Father. The book isn’t only an interesting look at the context of some modern theological ideas; it’s also offers some profound insight into God’s love and eternal plan." —Relevant Magazine (Named one of the Top 10 Books of 2017) God is wrath? Or God is Love? In his famous sermon “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God,” Puritan revivalist Jonathan Edwards shaped predominating American theology with a vision of God as angry, violent, and retributive. Three centuries later, Brian Zahnd was both mesmerized and terrified by Edwards’s wrathful God. Haunted by fear that crippled his relationship with God, Zahnd spent years praying for a divine experience of hell. What Zahnd experienced instead was the Father’s love—revealed perfectly through Jesus Christ—for all prodigal sons and daughters. In Sinners in the Hands of a Loving God, Zahnd asks important questions like: Is seeing God primarily as wrathful towards sinners true or biblical? Is fearing God a normal expected behavior? And where might the natural implications of this theological framework lead us? Thoughtfully wrestling with subjects like Old Testament genocide, the crucifixion of Jesus, eternal punishment in hell, and the final judgment in Revelation, Zanhd maintains that the summit of divine revelation for sinners is not God is wrath, but God is love.
