The term hobo is derived from the English term "hoe boy," which refered to the people who worked the gardens and estates of the wealthy. The "hoe boys" were the original migrant workers (sorry, I don´t have a reference that supports this statement but it sounds good). The reader needs to understand and appreciate the life, desires, and motivations of these unique individuals. The hobo is often maligned, misunderstood, and exploited. The term hobo is generally used interchangeably with bum or tramp. However, the difference between a hobo and a bum or tramp is significant. The hobo is hardworking, enterprising, talented, self-reliant, self-confident, and sensitive. It takes courage, strength, skill, imagination, daring, and endurance to live a hobo´s life. The true hobo is basically a laboring man - a man of many trades and many talents who wanders the country in search of work. He may clear right-of-way, cut logs, lay railroad track, harvest wheat, mine gold, herd cattle, shear sheep, work the oil fields, and move on. A hobo is a state of mind - a desire to explore beyond the horizon, to try another Job, and examine, live with, and watch people. The hobo learns from watching, doing, listening, and thinking. He has a lot time for thinking while working and traveling. It is truly an education that cannot be gained in a classroom. A hobo´s attention span is usually quite short. Once the job is mastered, he moves on to another challenge. Traveling is at the heart of hobo life, and trains provided the means for that travel. But, in reality, the hobo rides the train to get from one place to another. He may spend a couple of days getting to the apple orchards of Washington or the potato fields of Idaho where he works until the harvest is in; then on a train again to the next work site. The train is just a convenient means of transportation. I have spent more time hitchhiking cars, trucks, airplanes, and boats than I have riding the rails. I once hitchhiked 25,000 miles in one year over the highway and have hitchhiked even more miles by air and ship. Hobos often go to sea, as I did, perhaps to break the bounds of land. I vividly recall having a compelling desire to see beyond the horizon the first time I saw the Pacific Ocean. I have the same feelings when I gaze into space. I doubt that I will ever travel into space, but I have been involved in historic space launches, such as the Hubble Telescope, Galileo, Cassini, and the Space Station launches. I was working down range from Cape Canaveral for the first manned launch. That is as close as I will ever get to space. I feel privileged to have been involved in the space programs. This book is an account of the first forty years of my life, which follows a hobo´s philosophy.

For six years, he lived and meticulously logged the journey of Hobo. As his daughter, I simply made it legible. Therefore, we share the penning of it - albeit decades apart. Captured within Hobo's log are the untold challenges, joys, and heartaches encountered while circumnavigating through the dream. I've always suffered from dyslexia but although I have mentioned this fact to my family and close friends; my quick wit, confidence and my generally eloquent manner of conversation has always hidden just how seriously the condition has affected parts of my life. This struggle has given me a unique perspective on the world and helped me to look at situations and people not just through words, which I've always struggled to do, but through the actions of Belief, perception and circumstance of an individual With these works I have tried to use words in a simplistic fashion to engage people of all abilities and hopefully to notice, see and establish the truth of which I write. I am of a philosophical view with a pragmatic, optimistic outlook in regards to the world's problems and strife's. I think my ultimate goal is to draw attention to society's understanding of perception. Enjoy my writing and endeavour to make sense of what I'm trying to express.

During the Great Depression, Harry Partch rode the railways, following the fruit harvest across the country. From his experience among hoboes he found what he called ""a fountainhead of pure musical Americana."" Although he later wrote immense stage works for instruments of his own creation, he is still regularly called a hobo composer for the compositions that grew out of this period of his life. Yet few have questioned the label''s impact on his musical output, compositional life, and reception. Focusing on Partch the person alongside the cultural icon he represented, this study examines Par.

This is a book about turtles. Well, really it is a book about the theory of turtles. Although the book makes little mention of the actual turtles themselves, it acts as an allegorical tale of a turtle that has lived a long life in the desert. This turtle became very dry and dusty. It was so dehydrated that it was certain it was going to dry up completely and become nothing more than a crumbling shell on the hard desert ground. As it lay dying and dehydrated on the desert floor, a vulture came to flip it over and peck at the insides, wishing to enjoy delicious turtle soup. When the vulture swooped down to commit this act, the turtle discovered that it is in fact a tortoise. This is the tale of that vulture and how that vulture ended up saving the life of the turtle. This vulture ended up showing the turtle that there are many other turtles in the desert. And also it showed the turtle that it was in fact a dove or maybe a stork. This book is the baby.

Having made a fruitless search for some friends in the upmost western part of Cornwall I was left with financial difficulty in getting back to Birmingham. I had already been walking about the English countryside since April and it was now October. I was in no real rush to get back home immediately and I fancied a bit of a stroll anyway. This stroll took me over a month to complete, and as the chilly autumn became a very cold winter I realised that living the life of a hobo wasn't as easy as one may think. The only only items on my person that kept me going through the seven weeks or so was a hot water bottle, a single calor gas stove and my radio. But there were times when even those life savers ran out of their respective fuels, and soon depression, hunger and eventual thieving, took priority for my needs. This is the story of my 250 mile walk home to Birmingham from St. Ives, Cornwall, in the autumn of 1990.
