There are many sources of data available to enhance commanders situational awareness. Whether the mission is war fighting, stability operations, or the defense of the homeland, decisions must be made based on the information available. Information comes from many varied sources, in many formats, with a continuum of validity, and is presented in a variety of ways. Situational awareness and decision superiority opportunity is increased when relevant data is effectively presented in a timely manner and with a measure of confidence. Exact, precise data is easier to present than uncertain data; but often uncertain data may be enough for a decision, based on rules of engagement and the value of the action to the mission. We have developed visualization techniques that focus on uncertainty for the purpose of providing decision-quality command and control information for both ground-based and airborne applications. A key focus of our work is to manage the visualization techniques so they do not clutter the display, as a cluttered display can actually decrease situational awareness by masking relevant information. Data can be presented on a 2D or 3D visual display. This paper proposes a method for managing 2D visualizations to increase situational awareness.

Visualizing Threat And Impact Assessment To Improve Situation Awareness written by Michael Cooper Nusinov and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009 with Human engineering categories.

"Situation awareness comes from combined knowledge of the environment, friendly actions and adversaries' actions. Impact assessment applies that knowledge to determine the consequences of those actions on specific missions and assets. In domains such as asymmetric warfare and cyber security, impact assessment is critical to provide timely and comprehensive situation awareness. An analyst needs to be able to quickly and accurately assess a situation, see the factors affecting important assets, and come to a conclusion on what the best course of actions are to take. Many attempts have been made to visualize a situation from observed raw data for better awareness. However, none have attempted to visualize the impact and threat of observed actions on assets and missions. This thesis investigates critical visual elements that will enhance situation awareness. Our approach leverages results of threat and impact assessment of ongoing situations. These include changes in effects on assets and missions by activities, and the projection of current situations into the future. This set of information is strategically placed and displayed to facilitate analysts to perform forensic and real-time analysis. While other visualization tools have focused on achieving situational awareness through representing raw data in a meaningful way, this visualization attempts to enhance situational awareness through situational assessment."--Abstract.

Improving The Analyst And Decision Maker S Perspective Through Uncertainty Visualization written by Evan T. Watkins and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000-03-01 with Decision making categories.

This thesis constructs the Taxonomy of Uncertainty and an approach for enhancing the information in decision support systems. The hierarchical categorization of numerous causes for uncertainty defines the taxonomy, which fostered the development of a technique for visualizing uncertainty. This technique is fundamental to expressing the multi-dimensional uncertainty that can be associated with any object. By including and intuitively expressing uncertainty, the approach facilitates and enhances intuition and decision-making without undue information overload. The resulting approach for enhancing the information involves recording uncertainty, identifying the relevant items, computing and visualizing uncertainty, and providing interaction with the selection of uncertainty. A prototype embodying this approach to enhancing information by including uncertainty was used to validate these efforts. Evaluation responses of a small sample space support the thesis that the decision-maker's knowledge is enhanced with enlightening information afforded by including and visualizing uncertainty, which can improve the decision-making process. Although the concept was initially conceived to help decision support system users deal with uncertainty, this methodology and these ideas can be applied to any problem where objects with many potential reasons for uncertainty are the focus of the decision-making.
