Computer analyst Raymond Cooper is tormented by the recurring nightmare of a young woman's murder. Unable to sleep, Ray's work and health suffer. At the behest of his sister, the beautiful Joyce Cooper, he reluctantly agrees to therapy hoping he can rid himself of the nightly torment. Soon, a young woman is murdered, an event which changes Ray's life forever and thrusts him into a world where reality and delusions become one. With his life spiraling out of control, Ray is forced to confront the possibility that murder is not confined merely to the macabre visions of his subconscious. Jack Malloy, a Sheriff's deputy whose alcoholism cost him his job as a detective and forced him back into a patrol car, responds to a prowler call, only to discover yet another in a string of murder victims. The gruesome scene sparks a renewed passion in the former detective. For Malloy, it is a chance to recover his self-respect and a time to confront the demons which have caused him to fall so far. He initiates a one-man investigation, both unauthorized and dangerous, which could cost him not only his job but his life.

The Terror That Comes In The Night written by David J. Hufford and has been published by University of Pennsylvania Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-05-05 with Social Science categories.

David Hufford's work exploring the experiential basis for belief in the supernatural, focusing here on the so-called Old Hag experience, a psychologically disturbing event in which a victim claims to have encountered some form of malign entity while dreaming (or awake). Sufferers report feeling suffocated, held down by some "force," paralyzed, and extremely afraid. The experience is surprisingly common: the author estimates that approximately 15 percent of people undergo this event at some point in their lives. Various cultures have their own name for the phenomenon and have constructed their own mythology around it; the supernatural tenor of many Old Hag stories is unavoidable. Hufford, as a folklorist, is well-placed to investigate this puzzling occurrence.

** AS READ ON BBC RADIO 4 BOOK OF THE WEEK IN DECEMBER 2022 ** 'Curious, lively, humble, utterly genuine ... a remarkable debut.' SUNDAY TIMES Alice Vernon often wakes up to find strangers in her bedroom. Ever since she was a child, her nights have been haunted by nightmares of a figure from her adolescence, sinister hallucinations and episodes of sleepwalking. These are known as 'parasomnias' - and they're surprisingly common. Now a lecturer in Creative Writing, Vernon set out to understand the history, science and culture of these strange and haunting experiences. Night Terrors, her startling and vivid debut, examines the history of our relationship with bad dreams: how we've tried to make sense of and treat them, from some decidedly odd 'cures' like magical 'mare-stones', to research on how video games might help people rewrite their dreams. Along the way she explores the Salem Witch Trials and sleep paralysis, Victorian ghost stories, and soldiers' experiences of PTSD. By directly confronting her own strange and frightening nights for the first time, Vernon encourages us to think about the way troubled sleep has impacted our imaginations. Night Terrors aims to shine a light on the darkest parts of our sleeping lives, and to reassure sufferers from bad dreams that they are not alone.
