The intended audience is all the people of the world who are concerned about the oppressed and suffering people deprived of justice and struggling under colonial oppression. The context of the book is the aggression and tyranny the British Southern Cameroonians are undergoing as a result of an artificial union that has subjugated the British Southern Cameroonians to the oppression of the successive La Republique du Cameroun governments (prompted by some Western imperialists) for fifty-seven years now. The book underscores the fact that the principle of self-determination in non-violent ways can solve the legitimate problems many world constituted regions are facing today. Moreover, it is a book that demonstrates in Christian theological ways how the oppressed and marginalized in society can rise up against tyranny and subjugation. The book is about the theology of self-determination. The author of the book (a theologian), inspired by his profound knowledge of Christian theology, believes that, through this theological vision of self-determination, the church must be engaged in the political and economic liberation of Africa and anywhere in the world where people are tyrannized.

The majority of the existing work on nationalism has centered on its role in the creation of new states. After Independence breaks new ground by examining the changes to nationalism after independence in seven new states. This innovative volume challenges scholars and specialists to rethink conventional views of ethnic and civic nationalism and the division between primordial and constructivist understandings of national identity. "Where do nationalists go once they get what they want? We know rather little about how nationalist movements transform themselves into the governments of new states, or how they can become opponents of new regimes that, in their view, have not taken the self-determination drive far enough. This stellar collection contributes not only to comparative theorizing on nationalist movements, but also deepens our understanding of the contentious politics of nationalism's ultimate product--new countries." --Charles King, Chair of the Faculty and Ion Ratiu Associate Professor, Georgetown University School of Foreign Service "This well-integrated volume analyzes two important variants of nationalism-postcolonial and postcommunist-in a sober, lucid way and will benefit students and scholars alike." --Zvi Gitelman, University of Michigan Lowell W. Barrington is Associate Professor of Political Science, Marquette University.

Taking The Initiative written by John B. Bader and has been published by Georgetown University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996 with Political leadership categories.

Taking the Initiative shows that majority party leaders in Congress have set and successfully pushed their own policy agendas for decades--revealing the 'Contract With America' as only the most recent, and certainly not the most successful, example of independent policy making. Cutting deeply into the politics and personalities of three decades of party leadership, John B. Bader probes the strategies and evaluates the effectiveness of House and Senate leaders operating in a divided government, when Congress and the presidency are controlled by different political parties. He provides a historical context for analyzing the"Contract" and shows that aggressive agenda-setting has long been a regular feature of majority party leadership. Bader interviewed more than seventy congressional leaders, staff members, party officials, and political consultants, including speakers Thomas "Tip" O'Neill and Jim Wright, for this book. He supplemented these interviews with research in largely unexplored archival materials such as press conference transcripts, notes from White House leadership meetings, and staff memoranda on strategy.

Excerpt from The Declaration of Independence For while the Declaration included nothing that was not familiar to every frequenter of the taverns, to every reader of the news papers and pamphlets, Jefferson yet couched this memorable paper in such powerful terms that even wavering minds could not but be fired with something of enthusiasm by its perusal. Though this remarkable summary of grievances needed no elucidation to men of that generation, it is almost meaningless to us. In but few instances do the histories covering the period lend any aid. An explanation, therefore, of the Declaration of Independence as understood by the men of the Revolution may prove of interest, especially as we are again hearing constant reference to the undying principles of that document. Passing over the philosophy of the Opening paragraph with the remark that it breathes the spirit of Locke throughout, with naught of French casuistry in it, we come immediately to the counts in the indictment against King and Parliament. They show a total of twenty-six. For seventeen of these the King alone is held accountable, while for the remainder he is made to share the responsibility with Parliament.
