Over the past few years, the Asian wave of tourism has been evident in the industry. India and China are leading the way for a change in Host-Guest relations where the first world city is playing host to the tourist from a developing country. This book focuses on the response of the Amsterdam supply side for Indian tourist as how ready is the city to cater to the need of a new source market, India. A collective response was conceptualized with the help of an Extended Resistance Continuum which has been developed with the help of Resistance continuum originally proposed by Dogan (1989). Insights were gained through in-depth interviews, observational skills and mystery shopping performed among representatives in all major travel trade sectors such as transportation, accommodation and retail. The supply side as the host of a destination is an interesting prospective as the tourist has the maximum interaction with the travel trade partners in the city. This study would be helpful for professionals in tourism and research field, particularly interested in the growing dominance of Asian outbound tourism.

Tourism to and within India has undergone some important changes in recent years seen by the rising numbers of international tourists and increase in domestic tourism. This has led to the redevelopment and rebranding of many of its destinations as the Indian government has begun to recognise the potential importance of tourism to the Indian economy and has begun to invest in tourism infrastructure. It is also recognised that as its economy continues to grow at a rapid rate, India will also become one of the most important countries in terms of future outbound tourism. Tourism and India is the first book to specifically focus on and fully analyze the issues facing contemporary India both as a destination and a potential source of tourists. The book analyses previous research and applies critical theory to key aspects of tourism in this region and supports this with a wide range of examples to illustrate the key conceptual points. As such the book examines aspects of tourism in India including tourism governance, cultural tourism, heritage tourism, nature-based tourism from the supply side and international tourism, domestic tourism, outbound tourism and the Indian Diaspora from the demand side. This timely book includes original research to offer insights into India’s future development in terms of tourism. It will be of interest to students, researchers and academics in the areas of Tourism, Geography and related disciplines.

India's outbound market is flourishing amid a strong economic and political climate, which is enabling more Indians to travel, perhaps for the first time. At 1.2 billion, India has the second-largest population in the world, in addition to the fastest-growing economy in the world. The Indian economy is rapidly transforming as urbanisation brings more citizens to cities, raising disposable incomes and driving consumer spending. The mega cities of Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata are vast in size, each housing 14-18 million citizens, while Tier II and Tier III cities grow in size and quantity. Millennials (aged 18-35 years) are an important stimulus to the outbound market because they are among those experiencing rising wages and have strong aspirations to travel. This report looks at the following areas: What factors are driving and hindering growth in India's outbound market? Where do Indians like to travel and why? How is India's economic and political environment impacting outbound travel? For what purpose do Indians travel abroad? How is digital technology impacting India's outbound market?
