Excerpt from India, Vol. 5 More than eighty-five thousand copies of twenty-two English editions of the Brief History were published during the author's life, and a twenty-third edition prepared by the Rev. W. H. Hutton bears the date 1903. Several translations of the little book have been made, including versions in some of the languages of India. It has been widely used as a text-book in India, and since 1886 has been required for entrance examination by the Calcutta University. Such evidences of the authoritative character and the popularity of the Brief History are surely a full warrant for the selection of it as one of the volumes of the history OF nations. Sir William Hunter may be allowed in the words of the preface to the first edition to tell the aims of his book: In this book I try to exhibit the growth of the Indian peoples, to show what part they have played in the world's progress, and what sufferings they have endured from other nations. Short Indian histories, as written by Englishmen, usually dismiss the first two thousand years of their narrative in a few pages, and start by disclosing India as a conquered country. This plan is not good, either for Europeans in India or for the Indians themselves; nor does it accord with the facts. As long as Indian history is presented to the Indian youth as nothing but a dreary record of disunion and subjection, our anglo-indian schools can scarcely become the nurseries of a self-respecting nation. I have there fore tried to put together, from original sources, a brief narrative of what I believe to be the true history of the peoples of India. These sources have been carefully examined in my larger works. This little book merely states, without discussing, the results arrived at by the labor of thirty years. Beside the arguments which the memorialist employed upon the minister, and the publications by which he boasts of having influenced the public mind, he recurred to other instruments of persuasion. He Offered presents to the minister, but they were rejected; and then to the minister's secretary, but they were rejected again. His next offer, but under the necessary portion of disguise, was that of a present to the nation: a sum of seventy lacs, or even more, to be given to the minister, on loan for the public service, at an interest Of two per cent. AS the memorialist in these transactions appeared distinctly to have lent or sold himself to the Nabob, to act in hostility to the Company, it was decided in the Council, by a majority of nine to two, that Mr. Macpherson should be dismissed from the service. Four of the members, not satisfied with a Silent ac quiescence in the reasons Of the President, add, that a man of the intriguing disposition which that paper shows Mr. Macpherson to be, is, we think, very unfit to be employed as a servant of the Company; more especially as we believe Mr. Macpherson has been concerned in the intrigues, which the greater part of the Board must be sensible have lately been carried on at the Nabob's Durbar, to the detriment of the Company's service, and which may have impeded the execution of their late orders. The reign of Humayun is also finished, and the annals of Akbar's reign are carried on to the thirty-eighth year. The Afghan Tarikhs are of no great literary value, but they are the best authorities for the period of which they treat. The first of them, the Tarikh-i Salatin-i Afaghana, has never before been translated; but the other, the Makhzan-i Afghani or Tarikh-i Khan-Jahan Lodi, is the book translated by Dorn in his work entitled "The History of the Afghans." Some notices of the first reign of Humayun are given by the Afghan historians, and his overthrow and expulsion are described by them from the Afghan side of the question in this and the preceding volume. The Humayun-nama of the veteran historian Khondamir gives some curious accounts of the regulations established by Humayun in the early part of his reign. This is followed by a few extracts from the valuable Tarikh-i Rashidi of Mirza Haidar, the brave and adventurous cousin of the Emperor Babar. Excerpt from History of India, Vol. 5: The Mohammedan Period as Described by Its Own Historians On this latter point I desire to lay emphasis and also to add that in order to bring so extensive a mass of material within the compass of a single volume I have been obliged to exercise the utmost circumspec tion and to confine the selections simply to those which would represent the main outlines of the most impor tant reigns, spread over nearly a thousand years, keep ing in view at the same time the aim of supplementing the two preceding books in the series without undue crossing or unnecessary repetition. In discharging this somewhat difficult task I have received material aid, which I desire to acknowledge, from my friend and pupil, Dr. Louis E. Gray. I hope that those who may use the book will find that fair justice has been done to the merits of the various Mohammedan historians included in it. We owe much to their records as a means of understanding the Moslem conquest of Hin dustan better than would otherwise be possible, and we also find them helpful in preventing us from being led away too far in other directions, if former prejudice might incline us to be biassed or to see only the side of the conquered.
