Excerpt from Indian Fairy Tales as Told to the Little Children of the Wigwam N the long ago when the red men were the free and undisturbed occupants of this vast continent, one of their greatest pleasures was to repeat the won der-stories dear to the hearts of their people. When they had gathered around the crackling logs in the long winter evenings, or had stretched themselves on the grass under the starry skies of summer nights, old and young would listen in silent delight to the tales of mythical heroes who, they fondly believed, once dwelt on this earth and were far stronger and wiser than mere mortals. But these were not all. As the red children looked upward at the stars shining down upon them so brightly and lovingly; or as they turned their eyes upon the sparkling waters of the stream or lake; they fancied them alive with other and strange beings who had a charm and magic of their own. These, too, were woven into the tales to which they listened with eagerness and delight. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. ISSN: 2397-9607 Issue 382 In this 334th issue of the Baba Indaba?s Children's Stories series, Baba Indaba narrates the Native American Fairy Tale "SHIN-GE-BIS FOOLS THE NORTH WIND?. Long ago in the time when only a few people lived upon the earth, there dwelt in the North a tribe of fishermen. They knew they best fish were to be found in the summer season, far up in the frozen places where no one could live in the winter at all. For the King of this Land of Ice was a fierce old man called Ka-bib-on-okka by the Indians?meaning in our language, the North Wind. Though the Land of Ice stretched across the top of the world for thousands and thousands of miles, Ka-bib-on-okka was not satisfied. If he could have had his way there would have been no grass or green trees anywhere; all the world would have been white from one year's end to another, all the rivers frozen tight, and all the country covered with snow and ice. In the summer the fishermen went north for the good fish. But when the South Wind began to dimish, the began to grow thick and the wind cold, they said it is time to go. That is all except Shin-ge-bis, the diver. He only laughed. The fishermen looked at him with amazement as they packed up and left. And so Shin-ge-bis stayed ready for the challenge Ka-bib-on-okka would bring. When Ka-bib-on-okka saw this he was insulted and thought Shin-ge-bis should be taught a lesson. What happened next you ask?? Well many things happened, some silly and some serious. To find the answers to these questions, and others you may have, you will have to download and read this story to find out! Baba Indaba is a fictitious Zulu storyteller who narrates children's stories from around the world. Baba Indaba translates as "Father of Stories". Each issue also has a "WHERE IN THE WORLD - LOOK IT UP" section, where young readers are challenged to look up a place on a map somewhere in the world. The place, town or city is relevant to the story. HINT - use Google maps. 33% of the profit from the sale of this book will be donated to charities. Originally published in 1895 and again in 1907, American Indian Fairytales is a collection compiled for children and young adults. Originally published under the title Snow Bird and the Water Tiger and other American Indian Tales, this volume includes 17 stories of magical feathers, fighting hares, an island of skeletons, great wizards, and bended rocks. A description of the Iagoo, the teller of the stories contained in this book, also waits within. The author, Margaret Compton, drew on authentic lore and anthropological research from a wide variety of sources, including the Smithsonian Institute and US government reports. Markedly, she retains some of the most colourful story elements, such as grotesque monsters and cross-dressing characters, which some other authors and publishers of her day (and possibly ours) might have omitted. She further maintained the authenticity of the works by sprinkling throughout stereotypical language references of the time, including "squaw," "papoose," and "wigwam." American Indian Fairytales also provides an interesting window into the attitudes of the past; we encourage readers to think upon how attitudes have changed in the century since this book was originally published. So join with us and journey back to a time when these stories were told around campfires, to the delight of young and old alike. A percentage of the net sale will be donated to the American Indian Education Fund.
