Excerpt from Indian Myth and Legend During the early Vedic Age in India prominence was given to the gods: the social organization was of patri archal character; the goddesses remained shadowy and vague, some being, indeed, little more than figures of speech. A great change took place, however, after the invasions of the Bharata and other tribes who are now referred to as late comers. Profound and speculative thinkers attained to the pantheistic conception of the world soul; new doctrines, which are not referred to in the Vedic hymns, regarding the ages of the universe and transmigration of souls, received wide acceptance as the result of missionary efforts: the Vedic gods were reduced to the position of minor deities and new god desses rose into prominence, one indeed being Bharati. Excerpt from Indian Legends Retold The first Indian legends, repeated by the fireside to children, deal with the animals humanized, their gifts and their weaknesses, in such a way as to be a lesson to the young. Our view of the creation allows a soul to all living creatures, and rocks and trees are reverenced as sharers in the divine. Beyond their simplicity and realism there is always the unexplained, the background of mystery and spirituality. These animal fables serve as an introduction to more complicated stories with human actors, which almost always have their hidden moral and are accepted by our people as guides to life. Excerpt from Karuk Indian Myths Indian myths are valuable as literature in direct proportion to the faithfulness to the old style Indian linguistic form in which they are told. Volumes of mythology distorted by being told loosely in English will be of only secondary usefulness in the future, when ethnology and mythology have become more exacting sciences. The only proper method for recording mythology is to obtain the services of a good mythologist and then to take down syllable by syllable in his own language, with unrestrained literary freedom, the story as he tells it, and as nearly as possible as he heard it from those a little farther back in the lines of elders. These ideal conditions were fulfilled in the following series of texts. Caught exactly as naturally dictated by Mrs. Phoebe Maddux, Indian name Imkyanva'an, meaning Wild Sunflower Greens Gatherer, 65-year-old full-blood Indian woman of the Karuk Tribe of northwestern California, they not only constitute Karuk as it is spoken and narrated, but Karuk literature, which when its syllables are analyzed and the exquisite force and balance of the elements appreciated, ranks well with the literature of any language. The Karuk, whose name means "upriver" Indians, hold a stretch of the central course of the Klamath, the most like the Columbia River of any of Californias streams. Along the banks of the central Klamath lived the Karuks, their villages of rows of well-built plank houses hugging the stream. Here they knew and named every rock and pool by the river, every gully and fallen tree upslope. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
