The Indian Ocean: Basics of Marine Geology, Physics and Chemistry begins with a short introduction to the and origin of water and formation of oceans on Earth. This is followed by the history of Oceanography / Marine Sciences, including international and Indian scenarios. In subsequent chapters marine instruments, sampling equipment, coastal features, offshore and deep-sea feature, and structures are discussed. Oceanic volcanism, formation of different rocks and geotectonics (continental drift, plate tectonics, seafloor spreading) are detailed, as these play important roles in the evolution of Earth. Sediments of the coasts and deep sea are presented in terms of their classifications, granulometry, chemical compositions and other parameters. The properties of sea water, oceanic circulation and cycling of nutrients form the crux of physical oceanography. The Indian Ocean: Basics of Marine Geology, Physics and Chemistry includes a chapter on the biology of the oceans, and their importance to sediment formation and palaeoceanography form another chapter. A chapter on mineral wealth of the coasts (near- and off-shore) and deep sea is included and contains beach sands, placer deposits, polymetallic nodules, phosphorites, hydrothermal polymetallic sulphides. In addition, the economics of mining these deposits are covered. Information related to harnessing various energies from the sea such as from tides, waves, currents and winds are incorporated. The Indian Ocean also deals with the important aspects of territorial waters, exclusive economic zones and coastal regulation zones together with international maritime laws, rules and regulations. A chapter pertaining to blue economy and green technology of the oceans are also presented. The highlight of the book is the inclusion of details, examples and photographs from Indian coasts and neighboring seas (especially Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal) and the Indian Ocean. Presents the Indian Ocean in the context of global ocean circulation and climate Includes a modern, comprehensive, coherent treatment of the Indian Ocean's physical, chemical and biological oceanography Provides examples and case studies related to India, that can also be applied elsewhere

The present volume curates papers presented at an international conference organized at OUCIP to engage with the oceanic turn in different fields of knowledge embracing Social Sciences, Humanities and, Physical Sciences to project the Indian Ocean as the new frontier of research across various disciplines. The papers are divided into four sections: The Oceanic Reach has papers reflecting on the received knowledge regarding the historical role and reach of the Indian Ocean and providing new insights in the evolving dynamics of the region. The section on Literature and Culture has essays reflecting the different trajectories within Humanities and Cultural Studies through which Indian Ocean has stimulated the imagination of scholars, intellectuals, diasporic writers, and culture historians. The section on Roots and Routes includes accounts of the historical, cultural, religious, trade and diasporic linkages across oceanic communities inhabiting the vast expanse of the Indian Ocean. The final section on Power Games includes papers that deal with the increasing interests of various international powers in the Indian Ocean region particularly in the context of the shift from the Asian land mass to the enormous presence of the Indian Ocean, and the economic, political and strategic significance that it has for the entire region. Taken together these contributions offer both an opportunity and a challenge for interested scholars to engage with Indian Ocean as a new frontier of knowledge with enormous potential for research and exploration. Please note: Taylor & Francis does not sell or distribute the Hardback in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka

This volume contains the proceedings of a Symposium held at the University of Kiel, Germany, from 31 March to 6 April, 1971. The Symposium was organized by the Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR) and the Marine Productivity section of the International Biological Programme (IBPIPM) with the assistance of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and the International Association of Biological Oceanography (IABO). The aim of the Symposium was to summarize present knowledge of the biology of the Indian Ocean. Twenty-two presentations by invited speakers reviewed the research work carried out during the International Indian Ocean Expedition (lIOE) 1959 -1965, the first cooperative project coordinated by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC). In addition, reports were presented of postexpedition examination of material and of more recent investigations relevant to the aims of the lIOE. In keeping with the aims of "Ecological Studies", the present volume contains much new information and some synthesis, all directed towards obtaining an understanding of the functioning and organization of the ecosystem of the Indian Ocean. The plan of the Symposium was to present the relevant meteorological, physical, chemical and geological background and to follow this with the various aspects of biological oceanography. Because of the uneven stage of development of the different disciplines, the papers included in this volume vary in their analytical level.

The United States has national interests in the Indian Ocean region, and this paper recommends a US Government policy and a mid-range military strategy to support these interests. The interests of the littoral and major non-littoral nations are identified and examined. Alternative US policies and strategies are developed and evaluated. It is concluded that the primary interests of the United States in the region are to insure that the United States and its allies have access to Mideast oil, that the concept of 'Freedom of the Seas' is maintained, and that no unfriendly nation be allowed to become dominant in the region. The paper recommends that the United States place primary emphasis on diplomacy, and on economic and technical assistance to achieve US objectives.

As humanity enters the Anthropocene epoch the oceans are more at risk than ever before as a result of the increased exploitation of its resources. The Indian Ocean is the third largest ocean in the world comprising 20% of the water on the Earth's surface. The sea lanes in the Indian Ocean are among the busiest in the world with more than 80 percent of global seaborne trade in oil transiting through the Indian Ocean and its vital chokepoints and an estimated 40% of the world's offshore oil production comes from the Indian Ocean. The importance of this region cannot be underestimated and there is no doubt that there are many opportunities for economic growth and job creation presented by the waters washing the shores of the Indian Ocean Rim. In order to ensure a desirable future for humanity it is necessary to make use of the ocean’s resources in a sustainable and responsible manner. Climate change is affecting the Indian Ocean negatively, placing a strain on the ability to ensure food security and damaging the economies of small island states that depend on fisheries and aquaculture for their livelihoods. Increasing ocean temperatures and ocean acidification are taking a toll on ecosystems. This book is the first of its kind, providing fresh insights into the various aspects and impacts of the Blue Economy in the Indian Ocean Region: from shifting paradigms, to an accounting framework, gender dynamics, the law of the sea and renewable energy, this handbook aims at increasing awareness of the Blue Economy in the Indian Ocean Region and to provide evidence to policy-makers in the region to make informed decisions. The contributions are from a mixture of disciplines by scholars and experts from seven countries.
