Excerpt from A Study of North Appalachian Indian Pottery, Vol. 13 In any matter of controversy between our own country and any foreign power, in which our men folk would be called upon to rally to the colors, there can be no shadow of doubt as to their quick and willing response, for we are a patriotic people. But in our love of our country, as a whole, may we not at times fail to allow our affections to go out warmly enough to our Homeland, the mountains amid which we were born, the valleys in which we have lived since childhood and to the people whom we have come to know well only after long association with them? Many of us seem, at least, to grip but lightly on these things by the apparent unconcern with which we sever all these ties and go out among strangers in strange places. Has not one of the strongest characteristics of our race always been its warm attachment to the home the family and the homeland? Has not our influence upon the history of the world been largely because of this element in our characters? So this paper has been written, about a part of our goodly state of Pennsylvania, as a contribution to our knowledge of the people to whom this was Home in times when our people were aliens to the soil; and because the writer believes that our home acre has as much interest, of this kind, as the other parts of our great land, to which so much attention has been given and about which so much has been said. And, underlying all these considerations, that our people may come to know the real American Indian better, and that, understanding him better, may do him more evenhanded justice than he has heretofore received. The writer believes that the American Indian has the elements of a sturdy manhood in him, and, if given proper opportunity, that he will take his place side by side with the rest of us, which is his proper place, in this The Land of his Fathers. Excerpt from Aboriginal Indian Pottery of the Dominican Republic The Dominican Republic includes the eastern two-thirds of the island known as Santo Domingo or Haiti, the black Republic of Haiti occupying the western third of the island. The Arawak aborigines named the island Haiti or Aiti, a name also applied to a mountainous section of the Province of Higuey. Later, when Columbus cast about for a suitable name, he called the island Espanola. This name was later corrupted into Hispaniola, a term still in vogue, although geographical practice is to again employ the aboriginal name Haiti when referring to the geographical aspects of the island, but to refer to the island as Santo Domingo in connection with its eastern portion, exclusive of the western third which is occupied by the Haitians. The name Santo Domingo, originally applied to the present capital city of the Dominican Republic, gradually came to signify the countryside as well, although the term is now obsolescent except as the name of the Dominican capital city. The Dominican population in the cities is almost purely Spanish, although the laboring classes show admixture with African strains. Hybridization is more marked in the provinces, particularly in Samana and along the Haitian border. Isolated agricultural communities in the cacao-growing districts of the Vega (great meadow) in the valley of the Yuna River, also in the coffee-growing sections in the uplands of the interior, in the Provinces of Santiago, La Vega, Azua, Espaillat, and Monte Cristi, are descendants from Spanish immigrants, colonists, and soldiers of the royal armies of Spain. Excerpt from Indian Outbreaks The writer of the following pages came to Minnesota May 15, 1857, where he has ever since resided. His facilities for ascertaining the facts and incidents herein stated have been good, and he has endeavored to treat all questions with judicial fairness. The Indian side of the trouble has been given a hearing, something usually omitted by writers upon the subjects of Indian difficulties with the whites. History is a narration of facts or events. His comments and criticisms upon certain phases of the narratives herein contained are opinions long entertained by him, and he thinks not out of place even in a work of this character. If not of practical value, they may at least awaken a train of thoughts and reflections interesting to one or more readers. The work was written at the suggestion of friends, and he thinks that a similar one cannot now be found elsewhere. While the illustrations are not many, yet they are quite interesting. The portraits of General Sibley and Judge Flandrau will be welcomed by the many readers of this book, as they were the most noted leaders in the defense of the whites against the terrible Indian outbreak. The illustration of the hanging of the thirty-eight Sioux Indians, Dec.26, 1862, at Mankato, is a wonderfully correct representation of that exciting scene, as the writer, who was then present, can vouch for. Excerpt from A Vindication of the Decorated Pottery of Japan One word more. Your reviewer remarks upon the translations of the numerous marks and signatures which I have given, without, however, pointing out any errors. The perfect transliteration of the characters used by Japanese potters is a matter on which no foreigner living may dogmati'ze, indeed, various meanings may properly be assigned to many of these characters; but I feel no doubt whatever that the renderings of the marks in my volume are substantially correct, for they have been passed under review by four accomplished native scholars.
