This document presents a set of new and updated indicators to assess infant and young child feeding (IYCF) practices at household level. It is a follow-up to the 2008 document “Indicators for assessing infant and young child feeding practices – Part I & II”. In total, there are 17 recommended IYCF indicators in the 2021 edition. Seven are new, and four of the 2008 indicators have been excluded from the 2021 list of IYCF indicators. In addition, three indicators of unhealthy food and beverage consumption are included. Unlike in 2008, no distinction is made between core and optional indicators in this set of recommendations. It is important to assess data using the full set of indicators for any given population and to report all findings. This guidance document provides tools for the collection and calculation of the indicators. It is intended for use by managers of large-scale population-based surveys that will collect information on the status of feeding practices among infants and young children less than 2 years of age. Indicators can be assessed through large-scale population-based surveys, including the Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) and the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS).

Introduction: Breastfeeding and early childhood nutrition contribute to child health and the prevention of obesity. This study consists of a representative and prospective data recording of breastfeeding and infant nutrition within the first year of life. It also includes a cross-sectional survey of the structure of Austrian maternity wards.Materials and Methods: In a first step, this study used a questionnaire to assess the structure of consultation as well as the setting of maternity wards.Postpartum women in all of Austria were eligible for participation. Inclusion criteria for participants were delivery during the recruitment period (1st February to 31st March 2019) and aged 18 or above. Excluded were mothers whose newborns were transferred to intensive care. The assessment of breastfeeding behavior and infant nutrition is performed via online questionnaire, including the WHO indicators for assessing infant and young child feeding practices, for mothers at 4 points of time (14 days, 4, 6 and 12 months postpartum). Additionally, data on factors influencing breastfeeding such as the mindset, information provided on breastfeeding and infant nutrition, help with problems regarding breastfeeding as well as sociodemographic parameters will be collected. To make data recording as simple and easily accessible for mothers, questionnaire is available via mobile application. Arabic and Turkish versions of the questionnaire are available for women with migration background. Maternity wards with the highest amount of monthly deliveries were offered fieldworkers to support with recruitment. Results: From the 79 maternity wards existing in Austria at study start, all were contacted and 81% (n=64) agreed to participate in the study. 84% of the included maternity wards completed the questionnaire on the setting.In total 1666 mothers confirmed their participation and 78% of the sample completed the first questionnaire that was sent out 14 days after delivery. Analysis showed that 97.6% (n=1026) of participants attempted to breastfeed their newborns. Conclusion: The results of the present study will create the scientific basis for future improvements for child nutrition and child health. The study is still ongoing and final analyses are expected in autumn 2020 which will give further insights on factors influencing breastfeeding as well as possible approaches for breastfeeding promotion in Austria.

Over the years significantly effective strategies and programmes have been formulated and implemented which have started to yield positive results in reducing malnutrition. Therefore, it is important that every stakeholder who is a part of the system and plays an important role in addressing the issues related to health and nutrition must essentially be aware of the key nutrition actions and interventions. All health care providers who interact with mothers and young children should acquire the basic knowledge and skills on infant and young child feeding principles, management of severe acute malnutrition, iodine deficiency disorder, management of iron deficiency and management of vit-A deficiency. I would like to congratulate all the technical members of RCAPHN involved in developing this comprehensive package on nutrition components and themes which will excel the knowledge of public health students. I encourage all to use this handbook as a commendable resource material.
