Wenn ich nicht besser bin, so bin ich doch wenigstens anders." Jean-Jacques Rousseau beruft sich in seinen „Bekenntnissen“ auf Einzigartigkeit. Einzigartigkeit nicht nur im Bezug auf die äußere Erscheinung, sondern vor allem auch bezüglich seiner Innerlichkeit. Seine Denkstruktur, seine Gefühle, seine Wünsche, seine Leidenschaften, seine Vorlieben und Ressentiments, all diese machen ihn, gerade in der Art des Zusammenspiels dieser und der jeweiligen “Größen“, in denen sie auftreten, zu einem Individuum, in der Weise, in der wir Individualität heute denken. Rousseaus „Bekenntnisse“ werden als die erste so umfassende Auseinandersetzung mit dem eigenen Selbst und der eigenen Persönlichkeit in derart säkularisierter Form beschrieben. Nirgendwo sonst im 18. Jahrhundert findet sich eine ähnlich introvertierte und die eigene Seelenwelt mehr zentrierende Schrift, in der es ausser seinen Empfindungen keine weiteren Wertbestimmungen gibt. Darzustellen, welchen Weg der Mensch gehen musste um sich selbst und seine eigene Persönlichkeit in diesem Maße thematisieren zu können, wird ebenso Anliegen meiner Hausarbeit sein wie der Versuch, deutlich zu machen, dass Individualität von den verschiedenen Menschen in den geschichtlichen Epochen keinesfalls homogen gedacht werden konnte. © Ralph Paschwitz Individualität hat sich emanzipiert. Gegenüber ständischer Herrschaft, gegenüber traditionalen Vergemeinschaftungsformen wie bspw. der Familie und inzwischen gegenüber einer Gesellschaft, die scheinbar nur noch aus Individuen besteht. In seiner langen Entwicklungsgeschichte hatte das Individuum noch nie ein so großes gesellschaftliches Gewicht und sah sich dermaßen weiten und vielfältigen Gestaltungsmöglichkeiten ausgesetzt. Sport, Freizeit, Kleidung, Tagesablauf, Arbeit, Arbeitslosigkeit, Mutter- als auch Vaterschaft, Ehe. Alles ist zur Option geworden, die, zwar nicht autonom also generell unabhängig , aber zumindest individuell entschieden werden kann. Was ist der Grund dafür, dass die sich über Jahrtausende weiter emanzipierende Individualität und die seit mehreren Jahrhunderten von werdenden Individuen geforderte, unterstützte und förmlich umkämpfte Individualisierung in ein negatives Licht gerät? Ist die Individualisierung zu einer Gefährdung für die bestehende Gesellschaftsordnung geworden? © Ralph Paschwitz

The study of modern racism has tended to treat anti-Semitism and anti-black racism as separate and unconnected phenomena. This innovative study argues that a full understanding of the origins and development of racism in Europe after 1870 needs to examine the structure and interrelationships between the two dominant forms of prejudice. Contrary to expectation. anti-black racism was not confined to the colonial maritime nations of western Europe, but pepetrated even the rural societies of central and eastern Europe. Likewise, anti-Semitism could flourish even in the almost total absence of Jews. MacMaster explores the conditions under which modern political movements, faced with the crisis of modernity, began to draw upon and mobilise the negative stereotypes that, through the development of the mass media, had become almost universal features of popular culture. By weaving together the changing spatial and temporal dimensions of anti-Semitic and anti-black prejudice the study provides a fresh and more global framework for understanding modern racism.

An engaging introduction to contemporary debates in literary theory In the late twentieth century, the common sense approach to literature was deemed naïve. Roland Barthes proclaimed the death of the author, and Hillis Miller declared that all interpretation is theoretical. In many a literature department, graduate students spent far more time on Derrida and Foucault than on Shakespeare and Milton. Despite this, common sense approaches to literature—including the belief that literature represents reality and authorial intentions matter—have resisted theory with tenacity. As a result, argues Antoine Compagnon, theorists have gone to extremes, boxed themselves into paradoxes, and distanced others from their ideas. Eloquently assessing the accomplishments and failings of literary theory, Compagnon ultimately defends the methods and goals of a theoretical commitment tempered by the wisdom of common sense. The book is organized not by school of thought but around seven central questions: literariness, the author, the world, the reader, style, history, and value. What makes a work literature? Does fiction imitate reality? Is the reader present in the text? What constitutes style? Is the context in which a work is written important to its apprehension? Are literary values universal?
