Anders als hinlänglich aus der Rezeption der Kunstphilosophievorlesungen Hegels bekannt weist Carolyn Iselt in ihrer Studie zur Kunst-Religion in der »Phänomenologie des Geistes« nach, dass dem menschlichen Individuum in der Kunst auch für Hegel nicht nur Bedeutung in idealisierter Form als Götterskulptur oder als tragischem Helden zukommt. Vielmehr dienen die klaren ästhetischen Formen dazu, das Unterdrücken der Individualität hervor- und diese ins Bewusstsein treten zu lassen. Im Kapitel Kunst-Religion ist demnach eine Entwicklung vom sittlichen-allgemeinen Bewusstsein hin zum Erkennen der Bedeutung des Einzelnen und dessen Individualität nachzuvollziehen, und zwar anhand einer systematischen Abfolge von Kunstgattungen – Skulptur, Gesang, Epos, Tragödie und Komödie. Daraus lässt sich auch für die Kunst ableiten, dass ein Hinausgehen über die ideale Einheit auch aus ästhetischen Gründen notwendig ist. Während dies den zweiten Teil der Arbeit bildet, zeigt die Autorin im ersten auf, dass sich am Ende des Vernunftabschnitts im Unterkapitel »Das geistige Thierreich und der Betrug, oder die Sache selbst« das allgemeine Bewusstsein des Geistes aus der Kritik an der dort dargestellten Vorstellung von absoluter Individualität entwickelt. Herausgearbeitet wird hier, dass Hegel Individualität überhaupt mit »Thun« gleichsetzt, sodass die jeweils besondere Bestimmung der Individualität erst aus einem im Tun entstehenden Wechselspiel zwischen angeborenen Eigenschaften und sozialer Wirklichkeit erfolgt. Aber nicht nur der Einzelne bestimmt und erfährt sich durch sein Handeln, auch die Gemeinschaft sowie deren Bewusstsein, der Geist, gründet im »Thun Aller«. Im geistigen Tierreich wird zwar diese Basis des Geistes – das Tun interagierender Individuen – en détail dargelegt, aber ein geistiges Bewusstsein tritt lediglich als Desiderat auf. Mithin fehlt es auch an einem Medium der Reflexion. Letzteres stellt den Zusammenhang zur Kunst bzw. zur Kunst-Religion her. Im Kunstwerk reflektiert sich nicht nur das Künstlerindividuum, sondern gleichfalls die soziale Wirklichkeit, durch die auch der Künstler bis in seine Individualität hinein bestimmt ist. Durch den Fokus auf die Kunst-Religion und das geistige Tierreich wird in dieser Studie der Zusammenhang zwischen individuellem Tun, dem Kollektiv handelnder Individuen und Kunst herausgestellt. Dabei wird ausgehend vom hegelschen Text sowohl die Vermittlung zwischen dem Einzelnen und der sittlichen Allgemeinheit als auch die substantielle Bestimmung der Kunst diskutiert.

Schellings Identitätsphilosophie läßt sich auf den ersten Blick nur schwer als Plädoyer für den Identitätsgedanken lesen. In Wahrheit jedoch ringt sie kontinuierlich um einen adäquaten Begriff der Individualität. Aus ihr entfaltet sich das Konzept der Selbstbildung der Persönlichkeit, welches von 1809 an den Philosophen intensiv beschäftigt. Durch die Auseinandersetzung nicht nur mit Fichtes Begriff des Ich, sondern auch mit der Privationslehre von Leibniz gelang es Schelling allmählich, die Individualität so zu konzipieren, daß das Individuum weder zugunsten der Freiheit von seiner Wurzel in der Natur abgeschnitten wird noch um seiner Endlichkeit willen zum unfreien Scheinwesen herabgesetzt wird. In seinem bekannten Werk Über das Wesen der menschlichen Freiheit 1809 führt Schelling ein derartiges Konzept unter dem Begriff der Persönlichkeit ein. Ein Jahr später, in den Stuttgarter Privatvorlesungen, entfaltet er den Begriff der Selbstbildung. Ein Mensch ist ein Gebilde aus unzähligen Facetten, eine interaktive Aufeinanderfolge seiner individuellen Entwicklungsstufen. Eine lebendige Persönlichkeit ist er nur dort, wo er von seinen vergangenen Stadien - von seinem "niederen Selbst" - nicht entwurzelt ist und dieses durch das "höhere Selbst" überwindet. Durch dieses Konzept der Selbstbildung, welches die Zeittheorie der Weltalter von 1811 an vorbereitet, gewinnt Schellings Philosophie einen neuen Identitätsbegriff, der - jenseits des spinozistischen Quietismus - die Entwicklung des menschlichen Selbst darstellen kann.
