This document summarises results of the evaluation of 'INDUCAS', a European Unionfunded pilot project (2017-2018) on the development of online tools for beginning teachers and their mentors. This 16-month project was carried out by European Schoolnet on behalf of the European Commission. The document reports on the development, implementation and evaluation of an online course for mentors of beginning teachers and on the design, operation and evaluation of communities of practice for mentors and newly appointed teachers in France, Italy, Romania and Sweden. It concludes with some key findings, as well as recommendations and options to consider for future initiatives to support mentors and beginning teachers in Europe.

In many countries there are high rates of attrition amongst newly qualified teachers. No matter how relevant and high quality their initial education, nothing can fully prepare a teacher for the first months of their career. Although induction (early career support) can both help beginning teachers face these challenges and reduce drop-out rates, it is still far from being universally available across Europe. In its "Teaching and Learning International Survey" (TALIS 2013) the OECD highlights the benefits of induction: job satisfaction and self-efficacy are higher and teachers are more likely to undertake professional development and, later on, to act as mentors for other teachers. Technology can make effective induction support more widely available at lower cost and increase its uptake. The INDUCAS pilot project was designed and implemented by European Schoolnet and partners in four pilot countries: France, Italy, Romania and Sweden. It addressed two principal questions (as set out in the European Commission's tender specifications): - How can beginning teachers be better supported through an online Community of Practice that facilitates dialogue between these individuals? - How could a similar online Community of Practice support a network of mentors that develop their practice within their own community, for the benefit of the beginning teachers in their care? Answers to these questions emerged through three strands of online activity: - An online professional development course for mentors (MOOC). - A platform supporting peer networks of beginning teachers, piloted in four countries (F, IT, RO, SE), with additional networking across the four countries. - A platform supporting peer networks of mentors, piloted in the same four target countries (F, IT, RO, SE), also with additional networking across the countries. Drawing on the findings of a literature review, the course and the eight online peer networks ('Communities of Practice') were designed, created, promoted and animated during the project.

A remarkable work that recovers the songs Shakespeare's audiences actually heard and brings them to life through performance. Winner of the Claude V. Palisca Award of the American Musicological Society Shakespeare lovers have long lamented that so few songs in his plays survive with original music; of about sixty song lyrics, only a handful have come down to us with musical settings. For over 150 years, scholars have aspired—without success—to fill that gap. In Shakespeare's Songbook, Ross W. Duffin does just that. Eight years in the making, Shakespeare's Songbook is a meticulously researched collection of 155 songs—ballads and narratives, drinking songs, love songs, and rounds—that appear in, are quoted in, or alluded to in Shakespeare's plays. Drawing substantially on the unmatched resources of the Folger Shakespeare Library, Duffin brings complete lyrics (many newly recovered) and music notation together for the first time, and in the process sheds new light on Shakespeare's dramatic art. With performances by leading early-music singers and instrumentalists, the accompanying audio CD brings the songbook to life. Shakespeare's Songbook is the perfect gift for lovers of Shakespeare and an invaluable reference for singers, actors, directors, and scholars.

The Elizabethan Hamlet written by Arthur McGee and has been published by Yale University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1987-09-10 with Literary Criticism categories.

This original and provocative reinterpretation of Hamlet presents the play as the original audiences would have viewed it--a much bleaker, stronger, and more deeply religious play than it has usually been assumed to be. Arthur McGee draws a picture of a Devil-controlled Hamlet in the damnable Catholic court of Elsinore, and he shows that the evil natures of the Ghost and of Hamlet himself were understood and accepted by the Protestant audiences of the day. Using material gleaned from an investigation of play-censorship, McGee offers a comprehensive discussion of the Ghost as Demon. He then moves to Hamlet, presenting him as satanic, damned as revenger in the tradition of the Jacobean revenge drama. There are, he shows, no good ghosts, and Purgatory, whence the Ghost came, was reviled in Protestant England. The Ghost's manipulation extends to Hamlet's fool/madman role, and Hamlet's soliloquy reveals the ambition, conscience, and suicidal despair that damn him. With this viewpoint, McGee is able to shed convincing new light on various aspects of the play. He effectively strips Ophelia and Laertes of their sentimentalized charm, making them instead chillingly convincing, and he works through the last act to show damnation everywhere. In an epilogue, he sums up the history of criticism of Hamlet, demonstrating the process by which the play gradually lost its Elizabethan bite. Appendixes develop aspects of Ophelia.
