Excerpt from Inductive Psychology: An Introduction to the Study of Mental Phenomena In no progressive school are the natural sciences now taught without the use of plants, animals, apparatus and experiments. It is believed that the abstract and deductive study of those subjects fails in giving students the real knowledge and power and interest that may be gained by concrete and inductive study. This little volume is prepared in the belief that the same thing is true in an even greater degree in the study of psychology. The study of abstract psychology and of the thoroughly dried specimens of mental phenomena given for illustration by psychologists leads the pupil to accept on faith classifications, principles, and laws that he can neither observe, verify, nor apply, and not only fails to give him the knowledge and power he should gain from the study, but is often useless and even worse than useless. To gain real knowledge and power, the pupil must observe and analyze the actual processes of his own mind and those of others, instead of taking for granted what the author tells him about imaginary mental processes; and he must be led to observe, judge, and think for himself. With the teacher this is especially important. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Inductive reasoning is everyday, intuitive reasoning; it contrasts with deductive or logical reasoning. Inductive reasoning is much more prevalent than deductive reasoning, yet there has been much less research on inductive reasoning. Using contributions from the leading researchers in the field, the interdisciplinary approach of this book is relevant to those interested in psychology (including cognitive and developmental psychology), decision-making, philosophy, computer science, and education.

Two psychologists, a computer scientist, and a philosopher have collaborated to present a framework for understanding processes of inductive reasoning and learning in organisms and machines. Theirs is the first major effort to bring the ideas of several disciplines to bear on a subject that has been a topic of investigation since the time of Socrates. The result is an integrated account that treats problem solving and induction in terms of rulebased mental models. Induction is included in the Computational Models of Cognition and Perception Series. A Bradford Book.

Inductive Inference And Its Natural Ground written by Hilary Kornblith and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1995 with Philosophy categories.

Hilary Kornblith presents an account of inductive inference that addresses both its metaphysical and epistemological aspects. He argues that inductive knowledge is possible by virtue of the fit between our innate psychological capacities and the causal structure of the world. Kornblith begins by developing an account of natural kinds that has its origins in John Locke's work on real and nominal essences. In Kornblith's view, a natural kind is a stable cluster of properties that are bound together in nature. The existence of such kinds serves as a natural ground of inductive inference.Kornblith then examines two features of human psychology that explain how knowledge of natural kinds is attained. First, our concepts are structured innately in a way that presupposes the existence of natural kinds. Second, our native inferential tendencies tend to provide us with accurate beliefs about the world when applied to environments that are populated by natural kinds.
