Dopo qualche riflessione, come sue allieve dirette abbiamo pensato di onorare la carriera accademica del nostro Maestro, investendo nella raccolta di scritti in suo onore da parte di colleghi e amici. Pertanto, a settembre 2022, abbiamo inviato una call for book chapters ai colleghi, studiosi di economia e gestione delle imprese, che sono stati a lui più vicini sotto un profilo scientifico e relazionale. Ripercorrendo per sommi capi la sua vita e la sua carriera, Pietro Genco (per noi “il Prof.”) è nato a Castellaneta il 7 agosto del 1937. Dopo il diploma, grazie a una borsa di studio, ha intrapreso una carriera aziendale e di formazione presso l’Alfa Romeo di Milano. Resosi conto dell’importanza della formazione universitaria, si è iscritto al corso di laurea “serale” in Economia e Commercio dell’Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore di Milano, continuando a lavorare presso l’Alfa Romeo, in cui stava facendo rapidamente carriera nell’area del Personale. Lui ci ha raccontato spesso le difficoltà e i sacrifici della vita da studente-lavoratore, peraltro in una città nuova, Milano, costretto a dividere il proprio tempo tra il lavoro (durante la giornata), la frequenza serale degli insegnamenti universitari e lo studio per la preparazione degli esami. Dopo questi anni, ha conseguito la laurea in Economia e Commercio nel 1964, seguito dal Prof. Sergio Vaccà di cui diventerà allievo. Dopo la laurea, infatti, ha intrapreso una scelta coraggiosa, lasciando il proprio lavoro aziendale “sicuro” per dedicarsi totalmente alla carriera universitaria, percorrendo tutte le tappe che, da Assistente Volontario (1964), Assistente Ordinario (1968), Libero Docente (1970) e Professore Incaricato (1971), lo hanno portato a vincere il concorso a cattedra (1980) per il gruppo disciplinare di Economia delle Aziende Industriali. Nel novembre del 2010 è stato posto in quiescenza e con D.M. del 29/07/2011 gli è stato conferito il titolo di professore emerito. Oggi è Socio Onorario della Società Italiana di Management (SIMA) e dal 2022 Proboviro della stessa. Lungo tutta la sua carriera, l’impegno didattico è stato intenso e si è diviso per un numero cospicuo di anni in due Atenei, quello di Genova e quello dell’Università Parthenope. A Genova, come professore incaricato ha ricoperto corsi di natura marittimistica, come “Economia e Tecnica dell’Armamento e della Navigazione”, e, nella Facoltà di Economia Marittima di Napoli, quello di “Tecnica Commerciale delle Imprese di Navigazione e Assicurazione”. Dal 1980, anno in cui è diventato professore ordinario, ha preso la docenza di “Tecnica Industriale e Commerciale”, e successivamente di “Economia e Gestione delle Imprese” e di “Management Strategico e Corporate Governance” nell’Università di Genova. La collaborazione con l’Università Parthenope di Napoli è proseguita per decenni, tenendo per supplenza il corso di “Strategie aziendali”.

After a quarter century of almost general condemnation and rebuttal of the entire nationalization experience, it appears that there are second thoughts about governmental direct intervention in the economy. Reappraising State-Owned Enterprise deals with a topic often undervalued in the past decade but which now, with the crisis of 2008-2009, calls for greater attention: the direct intervention of the State as Entrepreneur. The collection of essays in this volume – prepared by some of the leading authorities in the field – offers a contribution to this debate by providing a balanced assessment of two of the most relevant experiences of mixed economies, the United Kingdom and Italy. In this respect, a comparison between these two countries is very much appropriate since in both nations the State played an important role as "Entrepreneur" starting in the early 20th century. In Great Britain and Italy, the heyday of the "State as Entrepreneur" was in the years right after WWII when it was used as a tool for promoting a modern society in which citizens acquired a stronger sense of belonging to their nations. The UK and Italy saw the State take on a too-pervasive role in the 70s; the two nations responded in different ways. In the 1980s Great Britain embarked on a harsh process of privatizations while Italians struggled on until finally submitting to privatizations in their nation in the following decade. The deep crisis of the final years of the 21st century forced both nations to reconsider State interventions as an appropriate tool in order to protect the wellbeing of the national economy.
